Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Thanks
I played with what I wanted to do but it came out in a very similar linear growth. I probably did it right but I still don't trust that kind of steady growth especially for a 10 year old project. It's too steady, the cynic in me wants to say it creates a very nice picture for investers.

edit: I tried to create a chart with the entire dataset and it crashed the spreadsheet lol

Funding tracker has been showing around 1 million or more a day for like 2 weeks now.

I really struggle to believe so many people are buying these overpriced modules and whatever else CIG are selling in such numbers. I mean, yeah, maybe that's on me, i shouldn't be surprised at anything by now, but even so.

As of today, they're tracking just slightly higher than 2022 YoY in funding. It's bonkers. On Spectrum and to a lesser extent on r/sc the hype is down but the funding is way up. Why are people still buying another concept that might release five years from now?

I was thinking maybe population was the same while ship price goes up making the chart a positive one, but no population also increased. My only conclusion right now is (as it should be) the tracker is unreliable.

What I missed are the long analysis of CIG accounting. How many studios, average rates, vs expenditures. All I hear about now is Manchester studio.

They run a blog which covers the main beats, but it's very much a marketing tool. No breakdown of debts / cash moves etc.

The only outright accounts are for CI UK.
So what happened to all those other studios? Are they still around? If not and money is still coming in they must be mamking more than when expense included all those other places.

okay, yeah I started reading that link then realized its PR.

Near as anyone can tell, most of them “Hollywood Accounting” style shell companies. They exist only on paper to drain resources/profits from a project, and into the pockets of others… in this case Chris Roberts and his family and good friend Ortwin. It’s how CIG-UK is able to pay dividends to its “shareholders” (AKA the Roberts Clan) despite the game not being released. CIG (main company) pays CIG-UK premium prices for their work, and CIG-UK profits from the difference.

Also, Chris & Company also collect director’s salaries from each and every one of those two dozen shell companies.

LA reduced to a marketing/HR shell in the recent downsizing. Austin is also seemingly reduced on the dev side.

But on the flip side they brought Turbulent/Montreal in house prior to that, and still seem to be trying to build up Manchester numbers. (They're also locked in to long-term payment for those fancy new Manchester offices etc, which they're still refurbing to boot)

Any savings made by the downsizing were to ensure payday got met, IMO. (It was kinda notable that UK CEO Erin Roberts took a pay cut too ;)). I reckon they'd settled back into burning more than they earn with the comfy investment cushion beneath them.

(And it doesn't help that the investors have an option to yoink their cushion away in Q1 2025 ;))

Wow!
How did Chris sell that to his brother? Did his Head of Marketting wife take a cut too?

Was there also a German Studio?

I remember they were bragging about have 500 devs before, what is it down to now?

Q1 2025? They're really stringing us along with hope aren't they?

We only know Erin's from the UK filings, but it might imply a broader trimming exercise. (Or it might mean he's being punished for being drunk and leaky at one too many official events ;))

Yep the German studio is still going. Fancy new offices too.

Not sure on their most recent staffing claims but they're aiming for 1k in Manchester. Linkedin has ~816 staff for CIG, ~185 for Turbulent (not all of those on CIG projects).

And yeah, the 2025 put option is all kinds of drama in the making ;). (The investors may not pull that lever, but CIG are certainly acting like 2025 is an MVP year ;))
