The Type-8

Hi :)

Erm... but will it be the Type-8 a new transport vessel? Let's not forget the new ships are supposed to be variants of old ships / lineages, but with new destinations / scopes

I mean, Python Mk2 is not a new multirole, it's a combat vessel (different than the source material)
Maybe Type-8 will also be different from the source material, and so maybe it will not be a transport vessel but a.... errn... an exploration vessel?

Exploration?... yeah, hard to tell atm. but that's the main question I think, is it going to be 'just' a glorified trader ship that's been created as a natural progression up from a T7. or is it going to excel in a specific task in one of the present main ship uses, for example Mining, Trade, Exploration and Combat.
I think perhaps we can rule out Combat as such in any meaningful sense.
Passenger capabilities?...also doesn't seem like this is it's forte, as we've more suitable ships for that specialist role
Trading and Mining has possibilities if module / cargo racks support this.
Exploration, could also be one of it's positive features, again depending on it's internal configuration.
Of course, there could be some 'specialistic' features we don't know about yet, either to fit in with the BGS features or some other future game development.

...
Utility vehicle Yellow or delivery truck Brown, or maybe one of the Chris Foss inspired schemes.

:D ...Slightly off topic but, I really would like a Frontier created shipyard based ship skin random colour / pattern generator tool!
Players could have unique colour configurations by inputting some numbers / letters maybe, as well as choosing from a sequence of patterns. for example, basic 'animal mammalian' paterns, geometric designs or a thousand other configurations. Something like a library of images covering many topical subjects, obviously supplied by Frontier but accessed within the shipyard 'paint shop'. Decals could be applied as well (clip art), but with perhaps thousands of choices that a player could use in conjunction with the paint / pattern tools.
I mean, who wouldn't want to create their own unique ship skin designs and Frontier endorsed motifs.
While I'm here posting I'll explain further (If Frontier Devs are hopefully reading this topic / thread) ;)
If you look at my posting avatar? It's a prancing Deer with words depicting my 'Corporation' that I use in game to portray a fictitious trading company. All I can do at the moment is use that name to advertise my 'Corporation' in game only as words. It would please me to construct in more detail a more detailed skin for my ships, depicting the prancing Deer as a decal in conjunction with the corporations name etc.
The 'decal' could come from a decal 'library' supplied by Frontier from perhaps said library that would cover perhaps thousands of varied clip art subjects.
Edit...Of course I wouldn't expect this game 'upgrade' for free, some payment in ARX is to be expected, for the shipyard 'upgrade' as well as reasonably priced skin patterns, colours and decals / clip art. ;)
Ok, back to reality / on topic! :D

Jack :)

I'm cussing FD quite vehemently, the T8 is not the flying brick I expected, but instead a quirky and very tempting design.
If the following 2 ships are as "non-vanilla" as the previous 2, I can see most of my fleet being remaindered in favour of the "new 4"! I'll keep the 6 Couriers, 2 Vultures and 3 Viper IV, of course...

The sad puppy part of me wants 3 & 4 to be the Cobra V (Or Asp Ex Mk II) and a large warship... All SCO capable, naturally!
The Cobra V is so tempting but I want the Cachalot* and Imperial Surveyor both medium pad ships of course.

*By Saud Kruger.
At this point I would be stunned if one of the 4 is not a new Cobra. I mean it's the poster child of the franchise after all and it would likely help heal the wound so may seem to feel with not being able to get at the IV.
If it didn't rub most of the forums salt mountain into the wound.

Oh, the Krait is about the best AX fighter I've built.
AX yes it's a decent ship.
As a hauler, I had one before I got a Python. It's reasonable, but the gap between the Krait and Python cargo capacity is too great to become the go-to option. Instead it became a specialist for smaller high risk cargoes.
I can't see the armament being a huge selling point in a Lakon.

i wonder where this leaves the type 7 as it requires a large pad for only 16 tons more cargo than a python, really hope it dethrones the python as the medium hauler but then also the type 7 should get a size 7 cargo rack at least
I doubt it will dethrone the Python when it needs the large pad. The Python remains the largest ship that can land on outposts!

I posted this to reddit a little while ago, to show how big a T-8 could be, while still being medium. T-7 is just weird. T-8 could be a good deal larger (as tall as a FAS, as wide as a Python II and as long as a Python I) and still be medium. T-7 is a medium-size ship that can't land on M-pads (as the T-6 is a small-size ship that can't land on S).

Looks like something from EVE
(I agree to a certain degree, and as previously stated, love the look of the Type 8 concept)
To be honest, if they are going to take inspiration from EVE I would prefer it to be the economy and infrastructure rather than ship designs.

"freighter" and "fighter" as so close to each other as words that it could have been a slip of the tongue. Maybe.
As already mentioned, if it's a freighter it has to beat the Python for cargo capacity, otherwise it's... not a freighter.

And if it does have the internals to do that, it could be OP for some other roles like passenger carrying.

The Type-7 already (marginally) beats the Python in that respect. So "all" that the Type-8 needs to do is to provide the Type-7 internals in a package that fits on a medium pad. Downsize PP and PD from the Python - size 6 would be ok, size 5 as in the Type-7 would still work - and remove/resize the hardpoints (2M, 2S?).

A nice configuration would have 4 Size 6 optionals, 4 Size 5 and two Size 1 = 390 or so tonnes capacity as a hauler. Or two 7's instead of the four 6's, that would also nerf the passenger transport capacity. If I had a wish beyond that, it would be a Size 6 FSD instead of the SIze 5 we got in the Type-7 - but that's unlikely, as we only got Size 5's in the Pythons, too, and the hauler with the Size 6 is already the Type-9.
