I know people want a NA pack for the wood cabin and Native American scenery, but what animals do people want with it?
I tend to see the two as separate themes.
- Northwest Coast scenery could come in a coastal pack featuring animals like the sea otter, walrus, sea turtle, manatee, pelican, and rockhopper penguin. Some land animals specific to that region would include the black bear, mountain goat, elk, porcupine, and waterfowl.
- The cabin/lodge/natural wood set could come with a temperate theme. I would definitely include the American black bear, but some other good animals could include a muntjac, turkey, pheasant, duck, European critter, barbary macaque, echidna, possum, snub-nosed monkey, Chinese alligator, and PD deer.
For North American animals, there are loads that I would like to see, but I only
need a few Nearctic ones, the black bear, 1-2 habitat birds, and a bald eagle if they ever add flying birds. My crazy hope is that they're going to make a DLC season 2 pass for consoles and start adding another 15 packs or a smaller number of packs with larger expansions. In that case, here's my full list.
- Whatever else is still added for my continent, it will not be complete without the American black bear.
- We also currently have nothing for birds, so we ought to get at least one, probably two temperate birds. The North American wood duck is my favorite and a very strong contender due to its unusually high prevalence in both local and international zoos. A turkey would also be really good and could double in domestic areas. The wild ones look extremely similar to the domestic breeds. The brown pelican would be a good representative for both North and South America. It also has the added benefit of interspecies enrichment with both pinnipeds. If they ever start adding a ton of birds, a crane for Florida, a Canadian goose for international zoos, a great blue heron for ambiance, and a roadrunner for Looney Tunes fans would also be nice to have. The members of the pink trio occasionally stray into Florida, but of them, only the roseate spoonbill has a meaningful range.
- For flying birds, we definitely need the bald eagle. We share the awesome and adorable burrowing owl with South America. With at least Eurasia, we share a snowy owl, raven, peregrine falcon, ptarmigan, and golden eagle. Though I doubt they'll show up, we have some nice options for jays and passerines.
- I think the Rocky Mountains need one ungulate. The bighorn sheep is the most iconic (well-known and featured in media), the elk is the most common in zoos (it tends to be one of our local star animals), and the mountain goat is the most unique (modders might struggle with this one). They are all pretty good, and I think they tend to have a similar amount of votes. The white-tailed deer has a huge range, and it is the only ungulate for the Southeast. It is much more boring than the Rocky Mountain ungulates, but it could be nice to have for wildlife park/refuge/rehab facilities. I might dream of getting all of them, but I'm most likely going to settle for mods for most of them.
- We currently have an excellent to slightly overrepresented small mammal roster, but there are still some great options. My favorite happens to be the most popular, the sea otter. It isn't strictly necessary for regional rep and is far behind the North American river otter's zoo presence, but it is the most unique otter left. I think it would be a huge hit with the casual audience and is a near-essential member of any potential coastal pack. The bobcat, river otter, and North American porcupine are staples for local zoos, and the latter is popular abroad as well. International zoos also feature the Virginia opossum, but its lifespan is too short to work well in Planet Zoo. As much as I love the porcupine, I would prioritize small mammals from other regions before adding it. We also have the grey fox, a taxonomically interesting option for a canid, which we haven't gotten in a while. Fishers and ringtails would be cute oddballs.
- For the Arctic, the musk ox and walrus are both top 10 icons. I don't need them, but they are pretty good picks. I would not be surprised or unhappy to see one or both.
- If we're counting Central America, the ocelot, pink trio, spider monkey, and white-nosed coati are all strong contenders.
Edited to add:
- For plants, I would like to see dogwoods and perhaps tulip poplar for the East; live oaks and trumpet pitcher plants for the Southeast; and some prairie flowers, including the bluebonnet, paintbrush, and purple coneflower.
