Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Hi Folks :)

I've just arrived back into the bubble this morning after a weeks exploration & mining trip, just sold some exploration data (over 1 billion 🤑, I think I'm a Teladi / Ferengi at heart!).
Moving on in the systems to sell my minerals and metals now, I'll probably head back out again after I've seen this weeks Livestream. 😉
Carrier is under lock down...prepare for Carrier jump....Ok first stop, sell some Platinum! :D
Jack :)

Just saying hello while passin' by since I'm AFK. IRL can be interesting too after all, but of course it has to do so while a lot of stuff is happening with ED!

:rolleyes::LOL:

Cheers to all CMDs here,

I'm still dead.

The urge to overelaborate an already overelaborate game is one of those things.

I personally like to play games, not role play flicking pointless switches.
I was wondering if their electronics skills were up with their procurement and set building skills just how many of those switches were pointless, it is probably still a lot but…

I think it also takes quite a bit of programming to make this really work with the game...
But the setup felt kinda familiar to me. I think I have seen something similar some years ago, paired up with a flight sim...

They could just be switches that power on the USB controllers for the devices being used. Inserting vjoy instances between the hardware and the software, and mapping in-game axes and buttons to them would prevent the game failing to load the binds file.

In practical terms, it's relatively straightforward. It's a lot harder to answer the philosophical question: Why?

Some people need this for the ultimate immersion.
Others do it because they love tinkering away.
In many cases, both might be true.

If you take a look around the forum, there are some threads that are about recreating the cockpit of our ships in real life. Which is, thanks to the advancements in 3-D printing quite well achievable.

To answer the philosophical part: People do this because they love this game to an extent that "normal" people struggle to comprehend. It is, like cosplaying or writing fanfiction, a way to express their appreciation of the franchise they adore so much.

Ludicrous! These things you say, would be almost as mentally crazy as starting a famous tour company, having affairs with elvira, dying at war and reincarnating as your granddaughter Penny.

But they're quite literally doing things that aren't in the game; you don't see toggle switches in those positions in the cockpit and you never see your avatar doing those things.

I guess my question was incomplete (although it was rather less genuine and more rhetorical in the first place): Why would you add more layers between yourself and the gameplay, especially in a game that already puts quite a few layers between you and the gameplay.

I have a pretty elaborate setup myself, with 13 independent analogue axes (not including the mouse X/Y axes) over six devices. Every single one of the devices is about accessing the gameplay. The last thing I'd want to do is add fake switches to make taking off last longer, just as I wouldn't put a pretend space suit on to go bunnyhopping over moon rocks.

The setup shown in the video looks like a flight sim "rig" adapted to Elite. It reminds me of a video I had seen some years ago about someone having built something like this for playing flight sims.

I somehow don't detect these extra layers between me and the gameplay.
But I understand what you mean in regards to the video.
The only explanation I have is that some people need this extra layer in order to be able to submerge themselves in the act of flying a spaceship. Though how this works for them with an adapted flight sim setup eludes me, too.

That's quite a bit more than what I have to offer with my trusty old XBox 360 controller...

Understandable.

That being said, if I had the money/space/3-D printer, I would love to put up the fully functional Elite cockpit setup someone here in the forum has been creating - given that still is a thing. But then again, I've been dreaming of having two functioning LCARS panels for playing STO for quite some time...🤷‍♀️

I've once flown a ship without shield while I was building it. I took 3% damage from lifting off a terrestrial port (low gravity). At my next stop, I bought a shield generator.

I didn't realise that touching down just a bit less lightly than a feather on ground with a few rocks could knock 2-5% off my DBX's hull - then again it's a very long time since i've flown any ship without a shield... reason: swapping it for an AFMU because i was going quite a bit further away from my carrier than usual... and errr sponteneity (aka "lack of planning"?) :D

I'm just been zipping around picking up signal sources. And I haven't gotten super into mining but boy does that storage and limpet collectors make a supa fine signal source hopper. I just been enjoying the city life and setting out with a hundred limpets, check all the nav beacons for sugary signal sources. Penny won't be shy with the heatsinks (they take manufactured parts, can't restock in the field!) next exploration!

The Tin Can mkII !

You know, some would call what you're describing "fan fiction".

I think if you don't find it in that section, check the player action documentaries. :)

Sounds familiar.🥵
What with ambient temperature, two screens and a screaming 3080, I found myself perspiring just waiting for the carrier to jump. Mind you, the rest of the house wasn't much better off.

Now then. Where was I? Ah yes. CZ's.

By the way, has anyone noticed that, when using the DC/ADC to land, your ship is always listing to the left as it hits the pad? It then corrects itself. A bit odd, I thought.
