DLC18 discussion and predictions

Yeah, I don't think thats such a good pack for a Children Zoo pack.

For me it would be:
Squirrel Monkey [Headliner]
Rock Hyrax
Patagonian Mara
White-Nosed Coatimundi
Budgies [WTE]
150+ Zoological Facts, Poster, Skeletons and Bones with a play set to make a Children Background Play Area
I was going to do something a bit better but I was trying to make it a Barnyard pack 2, in actuality I would replace the pig with the Reeves Muntjac or the Squirrel Monkey

Ók imagine if we got an extra year of DLC, but the catch is we HAVE to have a second barnyard, what the heck would it include? Probably the cool and or weird breeds. Like imagine if we got the Damascus Goat, how many people would legit be turned away by that fella
Don't ask why I even thought of this
We'd probably get the animals that should have been in the first one... which if I was in control, would have looked something like this:
  • Giant Flemish Rabbit
  • Nigerian Dwarf Goat
  • Shetland Pony
  • Pot-Belly Pig -OR- Kunekune
  • Red Junglefowl (ancestor of the domestic chicken)
  • Mallard Duck (ancestor of the domestic duck) -OR- Pekin Duck (domestic counterpart of the Mallard)
  • Alpaca

i wish dictionary was never leaked so we aren't debating about celebration or highlands. We all say Highlands and then boom it is Celebration
Most of the arguments that this isn't a highlands pack come from how the keyart does not show an obvious mountainous landscape and includes weird elements like the scenery and zookeeper, so whether the dictionary hinted at certain animals or not probably wouldn't have had that much of an impact.

A lot of people who think it isn't highlands think that because of the keyart lacking a clear mountainside landscape and including weird elements like the scenery and zookeeper, so whether the dictionary hinted at certain animals or not probably wouldn't have had that much of an impact.
I still don't get that packs that aren't even remotely close to mountains have huge hills and mountains on the key-art, this one is literally just a markhor standing on a rock, palla's cat on a rock and Hamadrya's baboon on a cliff.

I think, this may be the Rock Animal Pack.

3. Flemish giant rabbit
4. Nigerian dwarf goat
5. Muscovy duck
6. Sebastopol goose
7. Helmeted guineafowl

I think, this may be the Rock Animal Pack.

I don't think it'd change that many opinions, given the Pallas cat has made it easy to brush off. Przewalski and another name in Takhi are on there, whereas Pallas and Manul never have been, so it opens the pack to everything again.

If the Tree-roo, Sifaka or the other animals aren't coming, then yes I would say we probably were better off not seeing them in the dictionary.

Random question but what is yalls favorite theme category for packs? Biome/habitat based, location based or miscellaneous themes?
I like sorting things, but I guess it's Location themes.

Honestly this is the one theme that I actually think is viable explains everything the choice of asian inspired decor, the temperate foggy forest, the choice of asian animals and animals often associated with mythology, plus it also explains the jelly cake enrichment and the release date being almost exactly mid autumn. mid autumn animal pack is what im going with.

based on the chinese zodiac
rat = muskrat
ox = gaur or yak
tiger = pallas cat
hare = european rabbit
dragon = perentie
snake = emerald tree boa
horse = domestic horse
ram = markhor
monkey = hamadryas baboon
rooster = red jungle fowl
dog = bush dog
pig = white lipped peccary
I think that it might have something to do with the moon/mid fall festival but I don’t buy the Chinese zodiac theory entirely.

The obvious cold moonlight on the key art is also indicating something connected with the moon or night.

I like biome packs because they usually include animals from different areas and regions (usually... Am I right Arid Pack? Just kidding, I love this pack) and so they're easier to integrate in the zoo without having to create an entirely new area.
With that being said, I think regional packs are my favourite, especially when they encompass a wider region (like Eurasia, which had animals ranging from India to China to Scandinavia) because it makes them easier to break up into different sections of the zoo. Regional packs also have "better" scenery in a way, because of course it's more focused to a certain area; meanwhile, with stuff like Tropical (which was great BTW) the Indonesian scenery didn't really work with 3 out of the 5 animals

Meanwhile miscellaneous packs... For me the entire reputation of these packs was ruined by Conservation, which to date is my least favourite pack of all 😅

I like miscellaneous themes, like conservation (especially conservation). Biome based are nice too.
And you? 🙂
I think all of them have their perks.
For example i like how you can flesh out specific regions with animals via packs based on the region instead of being drip fed them over time.
But i also like how biome based packs have a wider spread geographically and therefore have a highly likelyhood of including atleast 1 or 2 animal that you can fit somewhere.

So im not actually sure which one i prefer. I think for animal packs, biomes are the better choice and for scenery packs regions are the way to go.

Whaat? Conservation is your least favorite? very curious for the reasons
For me its really high up there, i love how they took a rather abstract theme and made fitting scenery for it. Not to mention that it brought alot of really usefull pieces for realism, which is something i really like

The concept behind this pack is cool and really interesting, and while I hardly ever build backstage areas the scenery pieces are good... Except for maybe the wall set, which I've never really seen anyone use.
The animal roster was great; Amur Leopard, Przewalski's Horse, Scimitar-Horned Oryx and Axolotl all fit really well with the theme of conservation, as each of them has its own story of near extinction and reintroduction. The only "oddball" was the siamang, which feels only kind of vaguely connected to the theme of conservation, but oh well, at least we got a siamang... Right? Kinda.
See, this pack sounds awesome on paper, but I found the execution to be a bit lackluster on the animals side specifically.
We all have our problems with the Amur Leopard, and we all agree that the model isn't great (specifically the face, the rest is fine); but one thing that in my opinion doesn't get criticised enough is the siamang.
For instance, it barely looks like one up close. It's way too buff, the head feels too small, and overall it just looks not great.
But I could accept the wonky appearance, if only it behaved anything like an actual siamang. On the ground it moves on four legs basically, and when it's climbing... It moves just like the chimpanzee. And the main problem is: I've barely seen them brachiate at all. They never do the one thing that they're supposed to do. And even if they did brachiate, they were restricted to the ugly metal frames for over half a year.
And then, in 2023, the siamang became completely useless at least to me, as I now has the much superior Lar Gibbon.

So, in conclusion, Conservation is my least favourite pack because what is supposed to be one of my main selling points (the siamang) just kind of falls flat, and the other main selling point (the scenery, which is of excellent quality) isn't really my thing.
So the only things I really use in this pack are the Horse and the Oryx, and maybe occasionally the foliage.

Typically? Biome or miscellaneous.

I prefer packs that are open-ended, allow you to revisit your zoo and update a bunch of areas. That's why North America worked well for me even though it's still a location based DLC, as there were so many animals in that pack that fit so many different areas in my zoo.

A pack like Oceania or Eurasia are cool, surely do have their place and I still am very happy we got them; but it was much more "ah yes, I can build this specific area in my zoo (better) now".
