DLC18 discussion and predictions

I always got the impression that the grey seal was added first because there was a relative dearth of European animals at the time. Plus the California sea lion was an obvious choice for a North America pack.
All the aquatic pack choices were not the most obvious ones. The African or Humboldt penguin, California sea lion, Asian small clawed otter and spectacled caiman or American alligator would have made more sense, unless Frontier was saving them on purpose for later packs.
There surely must have been some planing so id assume they didnt do sea lion in aquatic because it was intended to come in NA later
The penguin and caiman were pretty logical choices in my opinion tho. If you hear penguin you probably think of antarctica, ice and snow so doing king penguin as the first penguin makes sense to me, not to mention that they are probably the most iconic one. And if they did one of the banded penguins instead there really wouldnt have been an opportunity to do an antarctic one later. As for the caiman, doing a crocodilian was a pretty boring but probably needed choice seeing how they did a whole new mechanic, and 3 wholey new animals, so something simple was probably needed.

I personally don't value a species based on how common they are in captivity.
I care about that kind of stuff when we get stuff that barely exists in captivity while having no common alternative.

Like I love the Quokka, but I would be dissapointed of we've got it before the kangaroo and wallaby.

Same for monkeys, I love the proboscis monkey in a vacuum, but seeing how it is oir only option for a tropical asian monkey it is annoying that we don't have a common species to go with it.

With regards to bears, I feel torn. In real life I really like them, but I hardly use them in the game and find them pretty boring, aside from (controversially) the sloth bear (just personal preference, I like fuzzy baloo). I wonder if I'm switched off to them because the game got bears so wrong right from the outset. I don't really want any more bears in the game personally but I can see how N Americans feel underrepresented without the ABB.

I wish the game had started with the ABB and a European brown bear, and built from there in the DLC with the polar bear, sloth, sun or moon bear for Asia and the spectacled bear from SA. That would be enough bears for me.
I agree. Personally I would add Panda though, because they are so iconic. ABB, European Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Sloth Bear and Andean Bear would be a good roster. Still over represented, though.

IMO everyone needs to free themselves from these self-imposed constraints and arbitrary criteria and be more honest about what they want.
I do think constraints and criteria can be used by people to express their wants though. Like, I want a zoo game to first and foremost realistically emulate well... a zoo. So that brings constraints with it. A 85/15 ratio for common and uncommon zoo animals (Which is more or less what PZ has really) then fits the bill for me, because it ends up giving you to chance to realistically create zoos from all over the world.

That being said, I wholeheartedly agree with you when people take their own personal constraints and criteria and preach it as if it's "the holy objective need". Because of course it's not, everyone can objectively state why they need an animal based on their criteria, but those criteria will forever be subjective. No matter how popular the criteria is.

The whole "We didn't need/don't need animal X" discussion is the most pointless one ever and it's sad that 5 years in we're still doing that on almost a daily basis.

Super unpopular opinion: I would choose Bat-eared Fox over Fennec. Even though Fennec could be considered too iconic to not include, I personally wish our Foxes were Arctic, Red and Bat-eared. The reason is because Red Fox covers a small part of Fennec's range whereas none of the Bat-eared Fox's range.
My canid roster as a whole would be: Mexican Wolf, Eurasian Wolf (with white and black* morphs), Dhole OR Dingo OR African Wild Dog, three Foxes and Maned Wolf. Black doesn't really occur in European wolf but its a cool color for wolves IMO and Himalayan/Tibetan Wolves can be black which are sometimes considered part of Eurasian subspecies even though they are genetically unique enough to be their own species...

My goodness, dude, please educate yourself before you keep this up... it's painful to watch even. And no, "using Australia as a contnent" is still not better.

Honestly, first you bring up @NZFanatic origin, without even noticing the NZ and now you keep sailing this ship... it's headache material.
Why do you guys get sooo annoyed over me calling Oceania Australia it’s just a word! It’s like calling a zebra a donkey. They are pretty much right.
