Opinion: 10 LY range for colonization is ridiculously low.

True- although from a PP context its more about value in the population / facilities. Explorers will want hotels and stations facing pretty skies....
yeah, I can see the Colonisation stage of PP being jus nabbing every system in the area so no-one else can get 'em - then build 'em big once they get 'safe'. Interesting times.

... or like FC parking issues on steroids :D

That's definitely another miss. Set a time limit for the "architect" to build what they want, turns into a normal system after that. (Do normal systems ever develop new stations or bases? They should if they don't.) Maybe let people tag any faction as native for BGS, then works like every other system for BGS and PP.

I think distance should be based on cost- so 10LY is 'cheap' while 1000 LY is correspondingly expensive.

Perhaps, but with distance comes another cost, one more valuable to us all. Time.

A 10 LY range could be made with a simple Type 9 build in one jump, but 1000 LY is going to take something like at least 20 jumps, probably more, for a ship with decent cargo capacity and a full load. Quick check, around 35 LY for a Cutter, engineered, with a guardian booster, and plenty of cargo space (600+).

That already would balance it quite well, and i presume these things are going to take thousands of tons of cargo to build.

Or cut into your logistic needs by colonizing a system in between. Solves itself, just give the range as an option.

And? You are building a colony, its going to take time and effort.

From a PP context, there are thousands of systems already in the bubble with population and facilities. Some if safe space within powers' regions, others contested, and others not yet within any powers' sphere of influence. Its not like PP needs more systems, at least, not yet. Time will tell if the current number of systems becomes a limitation and expansion would be needed.

Its a useful tool to be able to manufacture high value systems though, given that for some powers they exist in low value space- for example Archon and Antal have very low value systems compared to powers clustered around the core.

It sounds about right to me. Anything 20 Ly or less was what I had in mind beforehand.

This was never about everyone being able to claim their favourite system on day 1, and then never touching the mechanics of it again.
(I wouldn't have minded that being the case if it was 'base-building' of a level we see some other games, where essentially you're just building yourself one nice space-home on a hill somewhere. This has more impact on other players though, so I'm happy with how this sounds.)

Indeed. That is my point. That the further out, additional time is built into the equation, although FCs skew that equation. So additional credit cost perhaps isn't needed.
Yes, I think I said something similar myself.

But it would be nice to have several types of colonization- not just Brewer like big trucks but also small scale tin shacks that could be rapidly built (but be a squatter).

Sure, and for those, you'll want close to your power's existing systems right? Ideally. So distance isn't a big issue. I mean, maintaining systems for PP within a few dozens of LY as now isn't too bad. Every system owned by your power and getting to enemy power systems doesn't take long, just a few jumps max unless you're in a combat build with gimped range. You're probably not going to want to spend half your playtime jumping hundreds or even thousands of LY to get to the PP systems you're wanting to work on.

For those looking to expand outwards though, for expanding the realms of humanity or make waystation systems, or whatever, distance is important.

Don't think anyone is saying you should be able to claim your faviourite system on day 1 and then never touching the mechanic again.

That my friend is called a strawman argument.
