I participated in Distant Worlds 2 back in the day. It was great to be a part of a large player-led expedition and see many famous galactic sights.
I even managed to get up to Exploration rank Elite at the first waypoint of the expedition! Additionally, I found a number of systems I am proud to have discovered for the first time. To say I'm not interested in another Distant World expedition would be lying.
HOWEVER...
I do have a number of concerns regarding the expedition:
- I am worried that players who embark on the expedition will miss out on the opportunity to engage with System Colonization. As mentioned, I have a number of systems that I have first discovered, so it would be great to claim those systems for myself and become their architect. As you may know, claims are first-come-first-served and within 10 light years (not final) of each other, so it will be important to be fast and keep an eye on the expansion of human occupied space. Embarking on the expedition could mean I would be thousands of light years away from those systems with no hope of getting there in time to set up a claim.
- While the initial trip towards Beagle Point was exciting, the return trip was a slog and unmotivating. I ended up writing a plugin for the third-party tool EDMC just to see how much further I had to travel. I believe the problem was that players were left to their own devices once they reached Beagle Point, to return to civilization with their own route and volition. A potential solution to this issue would be to provide waypoints at significant stellar locations not on the initial route, or present an entirely different route through other sectors of the galaxy not explored on the initial route.
As I write this, I can see that there is a large outpouring of support from the galactic community in favour of this expedition going ahead. Whilst I too am interested,
I implore the organisers behind the expedition to take these points into consideration, so it can be enjoyed by the vast majority of players.
