The Open v Solo v Groups thread

How do you know they did it in solo, and not from the other side of the world while you were sleepinig? You don't, and neither does it matter. The BGS bucket filling game isn't fair, never was, and never will be. That's what CMDRs chose when they made a background feature not designed to be played the focus of their game play. There is always the possibility that someone somewhere will fill the bucket faster than you, or with more people or.... If you have an issue with that, better don't play the BGS.
Let's see, they keep diverting the topic from what I see haha I have been a BGS player for a looong time and believe me I know what I'm talking about the majority of players in Elite Dangeros play in private mode, because there is no risk of meeting the enemy face to face and you can't deny that to me, we have had big wars with other fleets and almost none of them have done it openly, very few and believe me I know what I'm talking about and they know it very well those who have been playing for a while Eelite, you know it, don't deny it, you know it very well, not because I have been sleeping hahahaha I am reading everything... mother of God.

but I see that there is a lot of pride and no matter how much I expose a REAL problem that has been in the game for MANY YEARS, it will not solve anything if I don't waste my time, I'd better retire. A kiss to all of you who hide in those ways, one day we will see each other in the open handsome, goodbye.

It isn't a REAL problem, it's part of the design. Apart from the BGS not being a feature intended to be played, it's also not a symmetrical PvP feature. There's ALWAYS the possibility you cannot oppose your opponent directly. If it is because they play another game mode or because they play from the other side of the planet while you are asleep or simply because they have greater numbers than you, it doesn't matter.

Do not tell stories to those who already know stories when we talk about BGS, you have not understood anything I have told you, you continue in your thirteenth misunderstood the message, I better not waste my time, yours is great logic, goodbye

But well, apparently, not everyone thinks that way. Some want to live in a "safe" galaxy where no one attacks or bothers them—a Disney galaxy. Okay, to each their own taste and passion.

[...] I'm not here to judge people's weakness or different ways of thinking. [...]

[...] Those who prefer a Disney galaxy should live out their fantasy [...]

[...] They want their world of colors and flowers, but the galaxy isn't like that. [...]

Not here to judge ? Yeah, sure...

Your argument about "how real life works" with those lunatics of yours is irrelevant. No simulator try to encapsulate life at maximum realism with the ty aspects of it. This is a game first of all, and pvp is only one of the many aspects of it.

I'm not playing this game to be someone else's content. Because that's the reality of this dangerous fantasy you're trying to glorify.

Put differently, we are all given the ability to play the way we want to - but no ability to force others to instance with us.
Sorry, my translator didn't translate it correctly.

I don't have the opportunity to play as I want, my choice is limited to what the game offers and it's not the same.

Well the game can only offer what it has been designed to do to. If you expect something different, you might have to realign your expectations.

Not to speak for Robert, but in this context "playing the way we want to" probably refers to either playing with other people or not. Which is a choice the game offers to you.

It's been written above. I will repeat, there is no open PvE mode in the game.

Basically, except for single player mode, there is no PvE mode in the game at all.

Oh on that I totally agree - it's a big oversight that this mode is missing.

Hi :)

..... I'm not here to judge people's weakness or different ways of thinking.
Are you sure on that? ;)

Those who prefer a Disney galaxy should live out their fantasy without affecting those of us who take the risk of not coming back every day. It's a cowardly approach that takes all the fun out of the game and, personally, one of the things that has disappointed me the most.

Okay, so if I play in Solo I'm a coward?...is that what you're saying?
Geeze!...
I don't usually reply to the Solo vs Open posts and I'll probably regret posting in this one but... I play this game with the tools we're given, which includes ...An open mode, A PG mode & A Solo mode. Incidentally, if there had been an Offline mode I'd most probably stay in that, We'd all be happy then do you think? ;)

My 'experiences' have been mixed playing in Open, some good, some not so. I play most of the time in Solo because some aspects of the game are quicker, I don't get interrupted gameplay caused by other players (if you discount Carrier Jump Times) and I personally find the game more relaxing in Solo mode anyway. I'm quite sociable but on my own terms.
I certainly don't want to finish a gaming session feeling frustrated or angry, which I have experienced for various reasons when I've sometimes played in Open in the past.
The game in Solo mode for example against NPC opponents (or even in Open in that respect) has just about the right balance for me combat wise, and in most of the other aspects of the game I get enjoyment too. Though too much 'trucking' can leave me a little exhausted, which is happening at the moment with my efforts in creating space stations / ports in colonisation. 😩...:D
But I digress...
I'm sorry you're disappointed with Solo players affecting your gameplay, but the game is what it is. I don't personally want to spoil your gaming experience by playing in the Solo mode, but at this moment in time I can't see any positive solutions to that in your favour as the game now stands.🤷‍♂️

Jack :)

Alright, I'll try to address all the key points carefully, making sure not to offend anyone, as people in this community tend to be very sensitive.

First, what Elite Dangerous are you playing? I see people constantly complaining about gankers. In my nearly 10 years and over 9,000 hours playing this game, I think I've had a maximum of five encounters with gankers, and usually in community event areas or engineer systems. Normally, you don’t run into anyone in the galaxy. It seems like an exaggeration and a cowardly excuse to use that as a reason to play in solo mode.

Second, there are many ways to avoid an encounter, whether with a ganker, another commander (PvP), or even an NPC. That depends on the piloting skills and abilities you've developed. Let me highlight just a few:

  • Avoiding or winning interdictions.
  • If you find another commander in a system with suspicious activity (hardpoints deployed), if you have doubts, jump to another system.
  • (Same as the previous point, but instead of jumping to another system, drop out of supercruise and then jump.)
  • You have an SCO frame shift drive—USE IT! Get out of any commander's reach in seconds.
  • Prepare your ship for these situations with fast boot sequence and good shields.
  • Use EDCM with plugins like EDR, which informs you about the commander near you—whether they’re a ganker or not.
  • Put a planet or a star behind you and always watch in the opposite direction.

In short, there are many ways to avoid these encounters that people complain so much about, but most prefer to develop their skills in complaining on the forums rather than learning to play.

I’m not a PvP fan, as you all emphasize. Generally—and unfortunately—the galaxy is empty. Rarely do you run into anyone, and the PvP encounters I’ve had in my life can be counted on one hand.

I've met commanders who respectfully invite me to PvP (admirable). You decide whether to participate or not. I’ve also met commanders patrolling trade routes to protect brave traders in Open (admirable). Playing in Open creates the need for roles that give meaning to the game.

One of you mentioned that I can't expect others to play or participate in my game, meaning in Open. But that’s ironic and even a bit illogical. If Frontier creates game mechanics that are so opposed (Open/Solo), where both sides have different expectations of their experience, there will always be one side that ends up disappointed. In this case, it’s the Open players.

To put it another way, if you provoke a war in my system but don’t come to fight it in Open because you don’t want to, don’t like it, or whatever, aren’t you forcing me to play your game? That game where you’d rather not show your face and hide while carrying out your actions?

From experience, commanders who play in Open (for the most part) don’t come to complain in the forums, and that’s something Frontier hasn’t understood. I’ve seen large, committed player factions become so disappointed with this mechanic that they never played again, and that’s a shame. Eventually, many factions disappear like this. And I think that, because of decisions like these from Frontier, this great game—with so much development and mechanics—doesn’t surpass an average of 10,000 players on Steam, all because they listen to the "Elite V" forum commanders instead of the commanders in the galaxy.

That said, fly safe (Open players). Solo players, be careful and don’t run out of fuel. o7

...
I'd just like to counter with "What forum are you reading? I don't see anyone complaining about gankers".

There's no reason to care about gankers because we have all the tools we need to exclude them from our game. All the continual restarting of this huge thread comes from the other direction, from people who don't like being excluded.

Any attempt to persuade people into Open is doomed unless you really try to understand why people aren't there already. Players who don't play in Open simply don't want to. In most cases they're not hiding; they're not afraid; they're not doing it to get a game advantage (there isn't one). It just isn't the game experience they want.

I feel that I understand both sides of this long running debate - I use all the modes at various times. I do understand why Open players want more people to be visible, but I think what they really want is more people who enjoy the Open experience. The ones now in Solo and PG are unlikely to fill that role: "These are not the players you're looking for". (OK, gankers are an exception: they want people not to enjoy Open; I hope and believe they're a small minority).

In the end I don't believe it's a big problem. FD have said that the majority of players play in Open. I suspect that often when we read complaints such as, "People undermining my BGS in Solo", the real situation is simply that they're just in a separate Open instance.

Believe it or not, but for some CMDRs, it's not all about avoiding gankers. Some just prefer to play by themselves, period. I do from time to time. Not every aspect of the game or decision made by a CMDR centers around PvP or the aviodance of it, you know.

Where I do disagree is when those people influence the game's most important activities, like PowerPlay or the BGS. These mechanics are usually played in groups (somewhat experienced) and with a strong focus on combat, whether in wars, ship missions, or on-foot operations. Those who prefer a Disney galaxy should live out their fantasy without affecting those of us who take the risk of not coming back every day. It's a cowardly approach that takes all the fun out of the game and, personally, one of the things that has disappointed me the most.

My initial reaction was different. I looked at the login choices and immediately thought, "Huh, one's missing. Where's co-op play?"

I've never seen anyone ask for a "Disney" galaxy, I think that's just a trope. No-one minds danger, but it needs to be danger that makes sense in-game.

I disagree there in several respects.
(1) I don't think PP or BGS are "important activities";
(2) if they're activities at all, I don't think they're usually played in groups with a focus on combat;
(3) if you're "playing" BGS and you focus on PvP combat, you lose;
(4) BGS isn't meant to be played at all - it's stated purpose is to make the galaxy respond to all player actions so that it will seem "alive". But all this has been debated over and over again in this immense thread.

But when you say "each to their own taste and passion" I agree totally. (Sorry that's not shown as a quote from you; I'm having trouble with the quoting thing). I don't want any PvP combat options to be removed from the game. I always say that PvE players and PvP players need each other. Whether you want to play "Fortnite in Space" or "Space Trucking Simulator" or anything in-between, neither extreme would be viable on its own and the combination we have makes financial sense and gives us all what we want.
I agree with Brokk, PP#s only interest for me is the modules, the Cytoscrabler in particular. Once I had access to that it's nothing more than a nuisance.
BGS was only relevant while I was putting together suiits and weapons for Odyssey, once those had been done it too faded from interest.
With colonisation we see players tying themselves in knots trying to shoehorn "their" faction into systems. It's just making a rod for your own back.
Whether any particular player decides to do whatever activity they've decided to do in whatever mode they've chosen to do it in at that particular time for whatever reason is irrelavent. Most of the Bubble was effectively single player in Open before Trailblazers and the number of systems has doubled.
Solitude is the expected default regardless of mode.

Thankyou :)

 I'm sorry to mention this but you're not doing yourself any favours by using these specific terms as contained in your sentence I've quoted below.

It seems like an exaggeration and a cowardly excuse to use that as a reason to play in solo mode.

It's the term "cowardly excuse"... to be even more specific 😖 !
It's derogative, you're expressing a low opinion generally of players who choose to play in Solo mode. Okay, that's your opinion, and it's accepted (by me at any rate), but individual players have individual reasons for playing in Solo. I've stated some of mine (but not all). If players have negative experiences playing in Open then so be it, if they have more positive experiences in Solo then which mode are they generally going to choose from?

First, what Elite Dangerous are you playing?

I'm not sure if this was directed at me personally or an open statement within the topic.
Anyway, I'll answer your question either way :)
I'm playing the game Odyssey. Not the same Playstyle as yourself though.
Yes, I have been playing the game for quite some time too, since the kickstarter program. I also played Frontiers previous games, Frontier Elite 2 and First Encounters.
Does that make me an expert at this game?...No. Far from it, In some areas I excel in other areas I flop...brilliantly. :D

I was going to discuss the topic some more but I'm not a very quick keyboard typist, and I see that there are some following posts to this one, so I'll 'retire' gracefully. ;)

Ah so Open isn't actually any more dangerous or difficult then? Or the bastion of the leet, highly skilled? Righto that's what we thought ;)
