DLC20 Discussion (maybe, but why not?)

A couple notes:
  • Cougars being felines and not pantherines actually goes in their favour, while snow leopards are basically Himalayan tigers
  • Kiwis, grassland cassowaries, and rheas are taxonomic magnitudes apart, so very separate even if they all look similar
  • Giraffes and okapi are different genera, so it'd far from a bad repeat in the family
  • Deer and antelope are very different and shouldn't be generalised into one. Even with similar bodyplans, fallow deer and antelope like nyalas have extremely different function in various ways. It's like saying that a jackal is more similar to a serval than a wolf
ok maybe this needs more explaining
- the body plan of a cougar matches much closer to that of a lion than a lion even remotely does to a snow leopard in fur texture, tail, body size and just general form. It would be much easier to make a lion from a cougar base than it would be a snow leopard

- the whole point was to prove how useless taxonomic rankings are when the closest rig for a kiwi would be the chicken or peafowl and for the most part quail would be the closest clones to kiwi not anything they are even remotely related to.

- my point with the giraffe okapi comparison was to highlight that even though giraffes an okapi are closer evolutionarily, morphologically they are further apart than bovids and the okapi would be. An okapi would be a fairly easy adjustment from a majority of the antelope rigs like the sable antelope given how similar their body plans are but turning a giraffe into an okapi would be much harder.

- my point again was that the fallow deer would be much easier to make from something like the sable antelope minus the horns since it is a closer match for body shape and proportional size than the moose though this one is a weak match since most mid sized ungulates would be an easy make from each other.

I thought of a new one last night
- the fossa is a much more direct parallel to the ocelot than any of the other small cats would be in terms of body shape, size, tail and ability to climb. It could also be a fairly easy edit of the clouded leopard which again isnt a small cat but the idea that a cheetah or pallas cat would be an easier or more clone like place to work from is wrong.

In order to quantify how clone like something is you need to first quantify how morphologically similar they are which does not work taxonomically if you do not allow for any movement. You would then also need to asses how to assess the complexity and changes in animations like climbing or brachiating. We do not have the tools to do this yet and would a huge effort to quantify what it means to be a clone.

I think you could make a perfectly fine lion from either one. The animations are all the same because cats aren't really that different in anatomy beyond size and fur density.(cheetahs being a big outlier)

The implication I had was making an emu from a kiwi instead of a rhea. While fowl fit a kiwi's size better, related ratites fit the wing anatomy better with kiwis. But ultimately, I think kiwis are a kind of animal that just need to be built from the ground-up.

I'd also chalk okapis in the "build from the ground up" category since they have some unique elements not found in antelope like the long tongues and the stockier means of moving around. They aren't very "antelope-like" IMO.

Worth noting that animations can scale alongside a model, and that models don't need to be the same size for animations to work. That why baby and adult ages of a species can use the same animations without any issues despite wildly different sizes being at play. Also, deer are proportioned like deer and not like antelope. Grazing antelope especially are very erect in posture, unlike the more horizontally-aligned deer.

I mean, any cat could net you a decent fossa model. Most cats climb anyways, so that's a non-issue. But honestly, fossas are so unique I think it's worth building them ground-up as well.

Sorry for the lack of information on my part, but will there be one more and final DLC? Or will there be more than one or none, update me, and does anyone know anything about the sequel Planet Zoo 2?

Nothing known yet about further dlc, but the america pack doesnt really feel like a final one, so atleast 1 more seems probable. Also 0 informations about a sequel

nothing is confirmed but console has consistently released dlc in pairs so ending on 19 is unlikely especially given how unfulfilling the last pack felt They have also very rarely confirmed more than one dlc at a time and we just got the last we will know more soon.

As for the sequel the most we know is that another game of this genre will come out next year and it cant be planet coaster or jurrasic world since those will have just gotten sequels. From this we can infer its very likely to be a planet zoo sequel due to all 3 being confirmed at once and unless its something new we cant predict there are no other options.

Or we won't. Frontier telling us the Americas DLC was coming was an anomaly. They might just do their usual radio silence again.
no it wasnt an anomaly they revealed zookeeper was coming the same way. As long as the unlocked livestreams have been happening the one after a pack release has confirmed the next.

In general frontier has given us just enough to confirm one more pack at a time whether that be in financial reports or vague comments in livestreams.

They've done it twice lol Which tbf isnt a lot but in this case a pattern is starting to show. As long as they keep making more, they will keep trying to get people excited, even if its 6 months away.
Didn't they also do it for Barnyard?

I remember we were discussing how Eurasia felt like the last one because of some swan song stuff in the scenario and that we knew the next one was going to be an animal pack and how much of an outcry there was when it was revealed to be domestics. Or did i imagine all that? lol

Personally I would love this, but I'm not sure how others would react. I'm also pretty sure they'd never do it but anyway:

Exhibits Pack
This pack would feature an update to exhibits to allow 2x2, 4x2, and 4x8 exhibits. On a case-by-case basis each exhibit species would be able to be put in each exhibit, e.g. cockroach might go in 2x2, 4x2, 4x4 but not 4x8. Large snakes might be 4x4 and 4x8 only.

It would feature a large drop of species. Logic tells me that making exhibits would be a lot easier than making habitat species but the fact they don't release them any more might suggest otherwise. Regardless, I'm going to include many species in the pack.

The species:
1. Inland Taipan
2. Sunda King Cobra
3. Reticulated Python
4. Panther Chameleon
5. Bearded Dragon
6. Plumed Basilisk
7. Shingleback Lizard
8. Frilled Lizard
9. Tuatara
10. Corroboree Frog
11. Hellbender
12. Chinese Giant Salamander
13. Aquatic Caecilian
14. Weaver Ants
15. Golden Huntsman Spider
16. Giant African Millipede

There are probably a number of species I've forgotten, but I have to stop sometime. I think it'd add a lot to have smaller and more varied exhibits given how tough it can be currently to fit them in buildings. Potentially this is an engine work issue, and exhibits can't connect to paths if they're 2x2, but I can dream

I thought barnyard was confirmed via financial records not livestream.

Let's be honest, it's because of the perceived unpopularity of exhibit animals vs the perceived popularity of scenery pieces.

The new format of animal pack - habitat species + scenery - seems aimed at trying to please everyone, those focused on building and those focused on animals. Evidently one exhibit species is equal to a handful of scenery items, but not to a full scenery set.

I also miss exhibit animals, but quite honestly I wouldn't want a full pack of them. That said I do wish the new scenery they've been releasing was more generic in some ways.

As much as I think that there's probably some other factors involved as well; I wonder how much of that unpopularity is really "perceived" and not just backed up by their metrics.

Like I mentioned in the other topic, those anniversary metrics they used to drop were never meant for us but are most likely extensively used by the team to decide what to do with future DLCs. My assumption is that they saw that with each new DLC the exhibit animals of that DLC were used less than the one before it and it ending in them being phased out entirely.

Heck, that could even point to walkthrough exhibits being an attempt at revitalizing the interest in exhibits first and foremost rather than it being "a test for birds" as so many people thought it was. But as it turns out, they weren't turning the tide either or we'd still be getting them.
