New ship: Panther Clipper

Well I really like the way it looks, but if it does not match or exceed the MK I's cargo capacity, I will make do with the Cutter/Carrier combo, and they can kiss my early access ARX's goodbye.

I only care about how much it can carry and how far it can jump when heavily loaded. IMO, these 2 things will make or break this ship.

How much do u want it to carry? This ship will be only a bit longer than a Type-9 based on the WIP images. So maybe it's only 1000 tonnes / units.

That darker central section seems to be detachable, at least looks that way to me. So, it is possible, that we are looking on new bulk-type cargo canisters containers.

I don't have a specific number in mind, but I would like it to be a significant increase over the T9/Cutter, but I'd be very happy if it was around double their capacity. Length is only 1 dimension; if you include it's width and height, it should be able to accommodate a sizeable increase in cargo load (not to mention the handwavium factor). But like I said, it's jump range as well as it's cargo capacity will make or break this ship. A huge capacity with a short jump range would still be a fail. In the end, players have been asking for some relief for all the hauling required for colonization; I am assuming that the Panther mk2 is going to be the response. The requested solution would be to move lots of cargo faster.

Hi :)

Why can't people just say they want overpowered things without having to justify it with a game they clearly haven't played or forgotten about?

I would like overpowered things!. :)...especially the new Panther Clipper.🫣
I will always have Frontier Elite 2 & Frontier First Encounters as fond memories of games I no longer play now 🤗. I will never forget! ...(echoing voice). :D

Hi :)
A minimum of 6100t, for taking large team delivery missions into safekeeping in one trip, instead of several.
That's just overkill! , a cargo capacity of 6099t is a more 'balanced' option imho. :D

I'll stick me neck out here and say it will definitely have more cargo space than the T9 & Cutter, but I'm not going to guess how much. That is something Frontier will have no doubt already decided...one would imagine...okay, probably not!

like it or not this is Elite IV (pedantry aside). You (not the literal you) may never have played the original games and that is fair enough, but it is totally understandable for those who did (and without those players this game would never have gotten off the ground) want there to be as much consistency with the other games as possible.

and actually the panther can fit in just fine with that........ i dont think it would be too OP to have a stripped down panther clipper able to carry 2000t .

BUT unfortuntely FD has chosen to go a different direction. The new panther clipper is smaller than the old one - the old one could not dock in space stations and had to be loaded and unloaded parked up outside..... IF FD didnt have the manpower or money to simulate this it could easily have been allowed to only land at large pads which are outside of a space station - so planetary bases and construction yards, which still means the T9 would be an essential tool in the heavy trader and colonisation experts tool kit.

imo FD could have done a lot with that mechanic, making it super useful for colonisation and at the same time not making the T9 redundant or making the panther clipper an i win button for CGs......

I am expecting a 1000ish ton full load, maybe 1200 at a push.

edit... seems my old memory let me down and i am confusing the panther clipper with the lynx bulk carrier.

My question wasn't why do people reference the old game.

My question was why do they do so incorrectly.

My entire point is that they aren't being consistent.

I think you’ve confused it with the Lynx Bulk Carrier, which was a Panther Clipper sliced in half and 1000t cargo containers bolted to it.

i have been googling frantically since posting and just came back to edit to actually question if i was wrong.... because i do remember having a clipper but dont remember ever having issues docking it. (I also had a Thargoid ship and iirc that was even bigger still)

however you beat me too it.

My bad!. thanks for correcting me :D

If one assumes that Frontier intends to create a logic between the external appearance and the actual modules (which should be assumed), the Panther Clipper will have 4 C8 modules as this fits to the separated sections shown in the pictures. I don't think these are C9 modules, because they would have to be rather larger to match the size.

It is conceivable that a C6 or even a C7 shield will be minimally required, which could then - with some C6s, C5s and some smaller modules - lead to about 1200 to 1300 tons shielded + 128/64 tons without a shield.

It's not much wider (same width?) as a Type-9. Height also seems to be similar.

Such a ship needs external docking or use a small ship to transport the cargo inside a station.

There was a bug where when you first received the Thargoid ship you had a hold stuffed with 65,323t of Alien Artifacts and 70t of Military Fuel - after a reload it went down to a more sensible 170t of cargo space with a Military drive fitted 😁

660ly jump range was not to be sniffed at though!
There was a thargoid ship?!?!
