New Paintjobs

Throwing on a gear decal and some "steam" is definitely not steam punk. I imagine some manager thought that up as I've seen what Fdev can do if the Devs were allowed to go the whole hog . I would like Dragon skins and unicorn skins with rainbow engines that spit out stars. Or a design where you can select the colours ??.

Oh, seems I missed the moment when Elite went down this road. Kind of sad.
Plenty of discussions have been had on this, i don't have a problem, many games give boost starts for new players so they don't feel too far behind (Everquest gives instant L100 +1000AA).
They will still need to unlock engineering to be able to outfit other ships, or buy more prebuilt which is more cash for Fdev to develop the game.
Elite isn't a competitive game PVP wise (much to some folks disappointment in the Hotel) so there is no P2W here.

As with all games that have been around for a while it can be daunting for new players and we can always use more players.

Hi :)

Or a design where you can select the colours ??.

🤔...Do you mean a colour theme, as in a paint job design, overlayed with a basic colour?...or just a basic colour without any design as such.

I've mentioned it before, if there was a program within the game that you could let the AI create a paint job design for your ship (or procedurally generated whatever, there might also be certain other elements to this based on other various inputs).
Once you are satisfied with the paint job (and price in ARX) you would click 'commit' and you would probably have a ship skin / colour that was pretty much unique. The skin would be saved somewhere so you could use it again for that type of ship.
For obvious reasons the unique ship skin would be limited to that initial type and class of ship, you couldn't for example use it on a different design of ship... unless you decide you like the design you created, in which case you select a different ship with your created design, and apply it, but you would then have to pay that ARX fee again in doing so.

This is basically all I could find for 'Steampunk' btw. :D

I personally think at this point in time 'steampunk is just an 'In' word 🤷‍♂️. Awhile ago Sapphire (The GPU manufacturers) had a card titled 'Frostpunk', and there were other forms of computer hardware (For example pc cases) that used the 'punk' word in their description of that piece of hardware.

Frontier should start an in house competition with the players to come up with some unique 'in' words for ship design skins, ship kits and other cosmetic paraphernalia, then capitalise on this by copywriting it etc!

I've previously called Elite "spacepunk".

Take a basic saltire flag now instead of blue and white I want it lime green and luscious pink ? Was the idea some of the designs are ish but the colour selection leads to them being dark. I prefer to shine and blind rather than skulk around . Whilst I appreciate that lucious pink wouldn't be on a basic palette but this could also be used for the nameplates and ship ID and the decals . I use the lunar wolf because of it's luminance .
Like I said there was a player who won a one off dragon paint job for either the clipper or cutter . He and the art team sat down designed it put it ( whilst consoles were around ) for him . It looked amazing so the team has talent it's just an issue that it's stifled by someone who obviously doesn't play or understand the game . Bad manager person

Bonus: with those ship kits the ships now run on coal, not regular fuel anymore.

Coal commodity confirmed!

And you’ll need extra space for water alongside it. The efficiency… oh, about .1% of a fusion plant no actual math was performed here.
Reet, next stop, The Pub!!!
