Hot takes for planet zoo

I would have mistaken him for jackal
So did biologists! For years, he was classified as a subspecies of Golden Jackal: Canis aureus lupaster. Nowadays, he is considered a wolf due to genetic differences from Canis aureus. He is the species, Canis lupaster. The initial genetic research was done around 2011... When it was done there were a ton of summary articles describing "New Wolf species found."

In a sense, biologists also mistook the golden jackal for a jackal since it's technically closer to wolves and coyotes than it is to black-backed and side-striped jackal.

Hot take: I want more breeds of domestics. It’s weird to only have access to cold weather UK breeds for my zoos in tropical places. This makes me really want a subspecies/ breed selector even more in the next game so they’re not taking up so many slots
I wish they would make it like "generic sheep/goat/pig" aka 'domestic pig' as a base and they'd make the breeds as VARIANTS. So you could either use it by your own imagination, like separate spotted pigs from pink ones to build a pet zoo with 'these are different species' or keep them together for colorful looking habitat. OR even better if they made the variants to be the actual separated breeds with different body build and colors and you could buy them from the trade center as so. You know, instead of 'brown' 'pink' 'spotted' pig it would be "hampshire variant A/B/C" "tamworth variant" "big white variant" "old spots variant" etc etc same with sheep, goats and chicken. The llama and cow idunno. Donkey is also not suitable for this. If the variant version would be done, then the DLC could have had ducks/geese and rabbits instead. But that's not petting zoo anymore, right?
Hopefully they would make another domestic DLC with the aim for rather breeds showcase than a petting zoo.

I would reccomend to wait for whole reveal to properly judge. Animal should look more like a civet (hence latin name) and its not clearly visable from this angle.
Based on image though I would say it is simply made to be conventionaly cute to appeal for animal target audience. This why you feel like it is weird. It has greatly exaggerated pupils and weirdly round head shape.

Japanese army assembled for sake of comparison with Inaturalist used as a source.

Edit: last one actually seems to stay almost in exact position to Frontier one.

Face, head, body, legs... Everything is just so off. I doubt it will look better in game.
It's just a shame that this very lackluster looking animal took up both resources and a slot in the pack that could have been used on something more interesting.

And the mod makes things look even worse. The more I look at it, the more baffled I am by how this mess of an animal looks in game.
That is NOT a raccoon dog.

Well, it is okay if you feel this way, but I think you will be in a minority on this one. But of course, this thread is called hot takes, so it makes sense. 😀

I just can't see why people think it's good, to the point of calling it "the best looking dog in Planet Zoo"... Like, I can't see what's right with it

Hi, I'm the one who said that. I still stand by it frankly. It's the right colour, the right basic anatomy, the right basic proportions, and the right patterns. While the fur isn't as nice as that on 2023 species, we also never got a dog that year so there isn't really a higher-level comparison that can be made for dogs. Yeah, the head's a bit big, but IMO it's minor enough where it still very much represents tanukis as the in-life animals.

Huh? If anything that comparision proves the Tanuki looks quite awesome. It is a bit fluffier, but there are tanukis that are literal fluff balls.

You guys got to remember that individual animals within one species can also differ alot.
yeah honestly i was on the side of it looking bad, specially compared to the mod, but that shows it is quite decent. I wish for more contrast in colors to accentuate the shading, but other than that model seem to be very good.

I think we could use a few more crocodilians TBH. Namely Cuban crocodiles and Central slender-snouted crocodiles. But of course, reptiles (including birds) are so severely under-represented that any crocodilian is a fine addition.
An African crocodilian (esp. one that isn't the Nile Crocodile) would be so cool to have. I'd suddenly feel so much better about building West African jungle sections if we had the slender-snouted crocodile.

Not sure if that's actually a hot take, but as far as reptiles go my main priority would be to get more habitat turtles. I'd love a simple pond turtle so much if it wasn't restricted to the exhibit box.

It seems like PZ model makers have a particular problem with neck fur on animals,
considering how Pallas Cat was made

and how they chose the solid color short fur version of Dhole rather than picking the unique colorful fluffy cutie

:(😞
So I guess the lack of neck fur is the main problem why certain animals like Racoon Dog don't look quite right.
the dhole has a reason though dholes from south east asia tend to not have fluffier coats they just really screwed up the taxonomy.

I know there are different dholes, I just personaly think the fluffy one is way more popular and known, and I think PZ chose the non-fluffy version to not have to do the fur, probably 😅

As I pointed out the dhole came in the south east asia animal pack so for it to make any sense at all in the pack it would need to be based on the south east asian subspecies which are not fluffy it had nothing to do with the fur.

Weird thing is that its still supposed to be the ussuri dhole, which is the northern one. Its specificly refered to as such in the zoopedia. But the design then is pretty clearly supposed to be a tropical subspecies.

All around weird shenanigans going on with that animal
