Which in-game species have you seen IRL?

I guess this means you've never seen the wild nilgai and blackbuck that live in Texas? From what I can gather, there are around 37,000 nilgai and 20,000 blackbuck currently living wild in the state.
But are they east or west? I don't go west much. Furthest I've on a regular basis would be New Braunfels or San Marcos. I'm typically in Houston area, Galveston, and I go north up near Tyler

That explains it - looking at the map of sightings of both species, the nilgai seem to all be clustered in a pretty tiny area just north of the Mexican border, and the blackbuck mainly in the area northwest of San Antonio (although there are single sightings of blackbuck in the outskirts of Houston and Tyler).

USA is insane
It is pretty crazy in some places, in terms of its non-native species - in Texas, there are also 15,000 chital, 25,000 aoudad, 3,000 gemsbok plus smaller numbers of lots of other hoofed mammals, including warthogs. And even Texas is small potatoes compared to Florida.

I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled, then. I haven't been to the border in a couple years now, but now I know what to look for

I’ve seen the following (many thanks to roadside zoos):
• Nilgai- Wilderness Trails Zoo and Boulder Ridge
• Blackbuck- Wilderness Trails Zoo
• Raccoon Dog- Zoo Atlanta?
• Lion Tailed Macaque- Detroit, DAK, San Diego and Toronto
• Honey Badger- Fort Wayne
• Pere Davids Deer- Lincoln Park, the Wilds

I haven’t seen the elephant, but supposedly Oregon has them and I might visit there soon!

Crazy hit rate on the macaque, that’s about half the places that have them in the US. Why the ? on Atlanta though?

I think I have seen the macaques at a few other facilities lol, the decline is insane. Only 2 of those facilities have them left! I am unsure if I saw them at Atlanta, as it was over 10 years ago.

From the new pack I have seen:

Pere David Deer - Ostrava Zoo
Lion-Tail Macaque - Ostrava Zoo
Blackbuck - Ostrava zoo
Nilgai - Ostrava Zoo
Borneo Elephant - Ostrava Zoo (not specifically this subspecies, but a generic Indian Elephant)
Honey Badger - Olomouc Zoo
Racoon Dog - well, I have seen them in several smaller facilities, but not in AAA zoo, although it was the mainland species, not specifically the Tanuki.

Funny, Ostrava zoo has so many species from this pack.

From the new pack I have seen in zoos:

Blackbuck - Augsburg, Berlin, Dortmund, Hamburg, Köln, Kronberg, München, Neuwied (all Germany), Vienna (Austria)
Nilgai - Berlin, Dortmund, München (Germany), Vienna
Lion-Tailed Macaque - Berlin, Köln
Père David's Deer - Berlin, Stuttgart
Honey Badger - none (they're only in two small German parks)
Tanuki - none (they're only in one small German park)
Bornean Elephant - take a wild guess how many German zoos have this particular subspecies 😄

I've seen almost all the species this time:

Blackbuck - Seen at a few places, my local zoo of Chester had these until around 10-15 years ago.
Nilgai - Seen in a few zoos notably Berlin Tierpark.
Lion-Tailed Macaque - Seen at Chester, they have been there as long as I can remember. I'm sure I have seen them in other zoos too.
Pere David's Deer - Berlin, Whipsnade, I think somewhere else.
Honey Badger - Nope, been to zoos with them but always been a no show.
Japanese Raccoon Dog - Not seen the Japanese species but I have seen the mainland species at Thrigby Hall.
Bornean Elephant - Nope, seen plenty of other Asian elephants at least.

I suppose if Frontier lists it as a subspecies in-game I'll include it in my "seen" category, but if they're listing it as a distinct species, then that'll be a no... until I finally visit Japan next spring let's gooooooo
Frontier is using their up-to-date full species classification, so I will not be counting them as "seen" just yet. I'll also be holding off on updating my tier list (I know the icons aren't even available quite yet) for a few more weeks so that I have a shot at seeing Coquerel's sifaka and markhor before posting it.

However in an amazing twist of fate, just mere hours after I made that last post last week that I'm quoting, I was informed that I will be traveling to Japan for work presumably sometime later this year (in addition to my planned purely recreational trip next year). So maybe that tanuki sighting will be coming sooner than I could have even anticipated at this point last week.

Tierlist update time! Since it hasn't been a long wait in between DLCs I haven't seen any new species that aren't included in the pack, so this time around the only animals I got to add where the ones coming in the Asia Animal Pack. As per usual, recommended read if you want some context for some of the rankings:
Tierlist update time! There is not much else to add outside of the DLC additions, though. I'm very glad to have seen the species I got to see in a recent zoo visit. As per usual, recommended read if you want some context for some of the rankings:

  • The Americas pack was a 5/7 for me! The White-faced saki, Ocelot, Greater rhea and American flamingo have been a common sight in my zoo visits, I'm really glad we got them for that matter as I see them as amazing inclusions for a zoo game, as I do with the Bush dog which I have only seen at two zoos but still find as a wonderful inclusion.
  • I have sadly yet to see a bighorn sheep or a coyote, both incredibly cool animals in my opinion. I really hope to at least get to see a bighorn sheep at some point in the future, mostly because Plzen zoo is a park I expect to visit soon or later.
  • I made a quick little trip to Madrid earlier this year where I was able to see my very first Black wildebeest at ZooAquarium de Madrid and Striped skunk at Faunia! I was specially excited to see the black wildebeest as a huge ungulate lover, they are incredibly unique and iconic animals.
  • Last week I was lucky enough to pay my second visit to ZooParc de Beauval, and I had a lot of fun! I saw many of the target species I had in mind (sadly the yellow-backed duikers the zoo houses didn't show up for me...) and between those animals I was able to see my first ever Tasmanian devils and Lesser Antillean iguanas! I went already knowing I really liked Tasmanian devils, but seeing them (and hearing them!) in person was truly an experience. Sadly, the zoo also has caracals that were a no-show in my visit, which is really sad I was hoping to see them.
Again, sorry for the poor quality of the picture, the forum won't let me post actual download. Seeing that the DLC's won't stop in quite some time (I do expect at least one more after this one) I'm really happy to continue updating my tierlist, it's genuinely fun and I really enjoy doing so!
  • As with the Americas Animal Pack, this pack is a 5/7 for me. I have seen Blackbuck and Nilgai relatively frequently in zoos like TerraNatura Benidorm, both Berlin capital zoos, ZooParc de Beauval and others, many times mixed in the same enclosure or at least thematically associated due to their geographical range. Although I do think I see them less and less, it's always a treat to see these wonderful antelopes. Another species I have crossed paths with relatively frequently is the Lion-tailed macaque, I have seen them at four zoos (Zoo de Santillana del Mar, ZooParc de Beauval, Zoo du Bassin d'Arcachon and Zoo Berlin) and will always appreciate their presence, they are beautiful primates. The animal I was the most excited for this DLC was the Pere David's deer, the model is truly great and has been an animal I've wanted in the game since day one. They are pretty common at European collections but I've only been able to spot them at three different institutions; at Zoo de Barcelona (which no longer houses the species), ZooAquarium de Madrid and Tierpark Berlin. The biggest rarity of today and probably my favorite carnivoran is the Ratel, which this DLC seems to represent fantastically. I've been lucky enough to spot this wonderful animal only once at Tierpark Berlin and I hope to see them yet again at some point.
  • The animals I have yet to see include the Japanese raccoon dog, which is a rare find at European parks, with a single holder in a German wildpark. I have seen the very similar but yet distinct mainland raccoon dog species (Nyctereutes procyonoides), which was just a distinct bunch of subspecies until very recently, but I won't be counting it as seen. The other animal I have kind of seen but not really is the Bornean elephant. According to current taxonomy, the Borneo population of elephants falls under the Sumatran subspecies (Elephas maximus sumatranus), which I was able to see at ZooAquarium de Madrid. I've decided to not count it as seen just because the elephants that I did see are of Sumatran descent, but depending on how I'm feeling in the next few updates, don't be surprised if it's up with the rest of the seen animals!
  • Last but not least, I haven't forgotten the Malabar rose butterfly! I'm by no means an invertebrate expert, and it's very easy for me to get lost with all the wonderful variety butterflies bring at butterfly halls, but as far as I'm aware, I have yet to see this species. I have been told by friends that this species is relatively present in captivity so I guess I'll have to keep an open eye for them the next time I visit a butterfly house!

They actually did a weird in between its taxonomy matches the separate species model but they include the shared range instead of isolating it to japan
