[DW3] Distant Worlds 3 Website & Roster Signups

Well after thinking about it....
I'm In :)
I've always wanted to go on a exploration trip like this!
Sounds like fun :)

I intend to do much Exploration, Xeno Biology and hopefully some mining to refuel the carriers

So how does this work? Spend a few days jumping to a location and then when get to that location everyone spreads out and explores?

it's gonna be a bit different from that but more info will be released closer to launch :)

Welp, that's me all signed up, twice. Nothing but gratitude for both being accepted, allowing me to get the live PC and legacy PS4 incarnations of my CMDR onto the roster. Same ship, too. Looking forward to it.

“The expedition launch site is taking shape. Congratulations, John.” The man wore a red and black pilot suit with his Remlok folded away. In his hands he held a Zoom-itTM visor, one of the fancy exploration gadgets that had found their way into the newly built colony.

The old man with his tinted glasses disparagingly looked at the visor, slightly shook his head and stared at the chain of four biodomes connected by corridor modules. There were three bigger habitats where the agri-labs had been installed and behind the windows the lighting was a disturbing green, which gave the base an eerie look.

“We have six months and are ahead of schedule,” the old man said. “Seems we can pat ourselves on our shoulders. Nothing of this magnitude has ever been accomplished.”

“Except the terraforming initiatives in the 25th and 26th century maybe,” the suit said.

“...which led to the Birthright Wars and the mass eviction of countless pioneers and colonists. We better not repeat history here, Cal.”

This Cal, the suit, now nodded downwards towards the loading ramp of an Imperial Cutter. It was strange, seeing one of these heavy but sleek ships out here, where Imperial rule was far away. On the other hand, these ships had long found their way into the hands of “merchant princes”, pilots rich enough to purchase Imperial grants of nobility. It was a win-win situation: Lucrative for the Empire and prestigious for the merchant. So maybe a Cutter wasn’t that unusual after all.

On the loading ramp a woman with a simple tech outfit was directing a number of ground staff with short, precise instructions. They seemed to frown and curse from time to time, whether because of the Transorbital Dynamics heavy cargo crates or the blunt directions was unclear to make out.

“That girl,” he said. Or was it a question?

“What about her?”

“She is not really a technician, is she?” the suit asked. Both knew it was a rhetorical question.

“She is what she must be,” the old man mused.

“Her gait, her demeanour. No rubbish attitude and irritating all the males around her. Ex-Military then? I can’t place her accent but she uses military terms here and there.”

A slight smile on the old man’s face.

“She is yours,” the suit nodded. “Where did you pick her up?”

“Somewhere far away, a long time ago.”

“A long time? She seems to be what? Thirty? Forty?”

Again, the old man just smiled.

“Fine, John. Keep your secrets then. But GalCop technology? There are few people alive who know the ins and outs. Too much was lost when they sold their secrets.”

The old man turned to face his Cal ‘friend’: “Again, of all people you bring this up? Back then your lackeys bought or stole whatever they could lay their hands on. Don’t even deny it!”

The suit sighed — and finally raised his voice (slightly) in obvious frustration: “I don’t! And I never will pretend it wasn’t necessary. And you and I, we’ve been through this a hundred times in over a hundred meetings and debriefings. It was either us or the Feds and Imps. And if it’s a consolation to your moral compass, much was later handed over to the Turners and they used it to kick the Powers in the teeth. First Alioth, then the rest.”

“You used me!”

Rolling eyes.

“Ah no, not this again!

Yes we did. You think you have the moral high ground? Well, spoiler alert: You don’t. Because there is none. There never was. It’s space and it’s dangerous out there. You step out, you get a bloody nose. So next time you step out, make sure others will get one.”

With a deep breath the suit seemed to regain his composure, or at least part of it. Again he nodded at the woman down at the loading ramp.

“We used you as much as you use her now. We made you be what we needed you to be. Same with the girl down there, no?”

There was a long pause between the two. The unloading of the Cutter had finally been completed but there already was the next ship waiting above the pad.

“Well, it’s good I managed to divert a few crates along the way then, wouldn’t you think?” the old man said.

“Those crates down there?”

“Yes.”

“Please enlighten me. What is in those crates? And how are Transorbital Dynamics and Deep Space Surveys involved in all this?”

The old man thought for a long moment. “We have acquired two GalCop deep space monitoring arrays for the surveys we will conduct and we will install them on the science carriers. Period. Yes, there will be modifications but ultimately it’s not the kind of wizardry you think it is. They will work.”

With that the old man obviously wanted the conversation to stop — to no avail.

“John, GalCop firmware has no similarities with current technology,” the suit stated flatly. “Not even first generation Pilots Federation firmware. It’s because of the fluid routers. They are based on isogenic helium now. It’s a wonder your Lanner still works in the 3300s.”

“The Lanner was a gift from an old friend after my trusted Cobra suddenly couldn’t be trusted anymore.”

“And where did you ‘acquire’ this sensor technology?”

The suit again looked at the workers on the landing pad, still sweating and cursing under their workload. “Open market? The Alliance museum on Alioth?”

The old man still faced his friend: “We felt the observation platforms used on the Equinox Project weren’t needed anymore. They were shut down more than a hundred years ago so we repurposed them for other scientific projects. It would be a shame to just let them rot, wouldn’t it?”

And with that the suit lost it. “You what?!”

“You heard right. Equinox. When GalCop decided that ‘no one was coming’, Equinox was abandoned but not disassembled. But you of course know that, don’t you? So I sent out some of my contacts to the Sarasvati when the last freelancers and space selfie hunters left. And then did what needed to be done.”

And with that the old man also nodded towards the pad and the Transorbital Dynamics crates. And ever so slightly a smile showed in the corner of his mouth.

The suit seemed lost in his thoughts, staring silently across the newly built facilities, sometimes weighing his head.

He finally took a deep breath.“You know, there was a time where I would have reported you to my superiors.”

“You never had any.”

“No, just hypothetically speaking.”

And then he pointed towards the woman that still oversaw the unloading.

“Her?”

The old man shrugged. “Maybe.”

Silently, a bit hesitatingly, the suit nodded. He seemed … content.

The ancilla see this as a competative thing
please take this six months to prepare yourselves, i do not intend to just hand over victory so simply
train and train hard my fellow void goers

And I do so wonder which member of the board of execs is missing from T tauri right now
i could dial up Alli but nah id rather wait and see

Wrong phone number, pal.

Picked the game up again a couple of weeks ago and forgot the last place I docked was Explorers Anchorage so midway through the journey back to the bubble. Figured got plenty of time to get back and sort a ship out

I think the answer ahead of time to my question is no, but I have to ask anyway...

Will Rawrunning preclude involvement in Metaelite? I don't see why it would, but want to check before making a decision one way or the other as my alt will be making the trip...

It's no problem. You can be a Rawrunner and use MetaElite with no issues.

Is there a role for Documentarian or "Press"?
In past expeditions I've taken screenshots and video at waypoint meetups to share online. I'll probably end up doing that again.

I got curious as to what I could take Rawrunning this expedition while meeting jump requirements so I spent a lunch doing the following:
Rawrunner STOCK Challenge

  • S: no Synthesis (materials/engineering)
  • T: no Thargoid or Guardian modules
  • O: no Optimisation tools (Spansh, etc.)
  • C: no Changing components after departure
  • K: no neutron star Kickstarts

Requirements
----
Min 33.5Ly
Requires 1 Fuel Scoop (Tests completed w/Best possible scoop)

Disclaimer
Yes, you're probably better at theorycrafting than I am, and this list was compiled during a 1-hour lunch as I was eating a chicken pot pie. Mmm.. pie.

This is no frills, no extras. Only optional is a fuel scoop. Have scoop, will travel. Everything else is paid with ZaonceCard.
