New ship: Panther Clipper

After another argument about it elsewhere, I actually found the definitive debunk of the myth that the old Panther carried 2000t cargo:
Panther stats come near the end, 1400t after drives, and then you didn't have weapons or anything else in equipment yet. So the MK II actually carries more, at least compared to a usable configuration of the MK I.

There are 399.9 meters long container ships on Earth (see the MSC Irina). The beam is 61.3 meters. The PC Mk II is merely 146.86m long. Real-life cargo ships would be much bigger in space, because they're not limited by rivers, narrow canals or other geographic obstacles. They could be 10-1000 kilometers long.
There's a huuuge problem with huge ships. The square-cube law that states that the mass of a structure grows with the cube of it's scale, but strength grows with the square of it. Two times larger structural member weighs 8 times more (volume), but is only 4 times stronger (cross sectional area). Even today's medium sized ships would break in half if supported at only one end. I'd say that the scale of E:D ships is at the higher end of "possible" with advanced composite materials, and even then they wouldn't pull those 40 G boosts without ripping themselves apart. There's a reason why we don't see megaships, navy capital ships and fleet carriers moving freely around. They could manage maybe .5 G before material stresses would become too high.
What I don't understand are those mkII cargo racks. They seem to be cargo racks with archiving (winzip cargo racks). Either I'm missing something, or Fdev has its flaws?
Cargo racks are more than empty rooms with some shelving. They're basically fully automated warehouses that can move, organize, pick up and eject cargo completely automatically; and hold the containers secure during very high G maneuvers. Of course there's room (heh) to optimize all that machinery so it'd be more compact and leave more space for actual cargo.

Been using my PC2 at the CG (after the inevitable cargo-hauling refit) and I gotta say that I'm impressed at how not-drifty it is.

Sure, it's sluggish but it turns and stops very predictably.
You can do stuff like boosting laterally to line-up with a station entrance very precisely.
You never need to apply any opposite thrust to stop it or control it.

Or simply: "MAKE WAY".
"MAKE A HOLE OR I WILL!"

Surprisingly, PCII in full load is not much slower than T8 in full load. My T8 does 282 m/s non-boost and 4 pips, PCII does 262 m/s. And it's much, much less drifty than Cutter. I've yet to lithobrake it once during planetary landings, but with Cutter you gotta be real careful when doing sharp turns--the vertical thrusters seem to lose all strength above ~260 m/s. I think PCII is my favourite large ship to fly :)

Again, PC2 simply needs 8A dirty drag G5 thrusters. Make no compromise there, it has to be all max.
And then it flies like a dream.
Finally got some time today to purchase, outfit, engineer, & FLY the new Panther mk2 ship and now i can truly say from actual experience how much i totally AGREE with both your advice ^ and assessment. Absolute superb design & sounds.
( not to mention such a spacious interior --- If only we could walk around in there someday! )

Sure it would be nice to have more 'Livery' options available, as well as to maybe have another ohh i dunno 500t of cargo capacity for Colonisation hauling, but it seems like maybe 'FDev' is sorta trying to help do that anyway bit by bit with these new CQ reward mk2 extra storage cargo-bays ?

One thing i don't quite understand: Are shields severly diminished with this PC2 ? Only reason i ask is, at least on mine, it shows my total ship hull-mass at something like 2100/4200 , but then my engineered 7A Prismatic shield has an 'optimal hull mass' of around 976 post-engineered. And so according to this old thread---> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/optimal-hull-mass-shields.406295/ doesn't this mean shield 'effectiveness' is severly diminished on such a heavy PC2 ship?
Again, i'm probably still very confused about what exactly the 'optimal hull mass' number means on shields , so apologies in advance for the newb question.

Regardless, man what a truly wonderful new ship yeah....

Am i right in saying size 6 shields are the smallest you can fit on this ship? or is there a way to engineer a class 5 which will run on it?

wont be an issue for me for a while, i am just curious!. i definitely want some sheilds to help cover my ass when i do my usual cluster messes landing - esp on High G worlds - but usually go the smallest i can get away with.

I'll say this. I really liked the ship. A wonderful huge bridge, excellent control straight from the shipyard. After the magic of the engineers, an indescribable delight. The sound is so good that you can build a monument to the Frontier sound engineers. The feeling of controlling the PC Mk.2 exceeds expectations, in comparison with the T-9... no, there is no point in comparing. The PC is better than all the cargo ships in Elite. I had to buy 2 PC Mk.2 to get the full impression of the ship. It is very good. Yes, it may not be to everyone's taste. But, refueling the Fleet Carrier has become critically less time-consuming. Earnings have also increased. Of course, I will not be against it if it will be possible to install 2 cargo holds of Mk.2 size 8 and 7. Then the PC Mk.2 will become unattainable :)
