Game loses something by not forcing Open play

They would only start worrying if they were trying to please everyone, and gain the largest possible audience. If you haven't noticed, that isn't exactly the plan here.
Er...yes it is. Hence their pant-filling reaction over the dropping of offline play. FD are a business like any other and they want as many players as possible. As with any MMO, the mob rules and they do get their way because the average MMO player tends to be the most vocal (on social networks) and the most demanding. Right now we're enjoying the quiet period before they arrive. I don't think it will last. They really won't understand the solo/open separation and the fact that they share the same universe and assets.

As with a previous thread on this subject, I still don't like the idea.

The Real problem is, there not enought Real Multiplayer Features online at the moment, its more like randomly playing singleplayers together,
theres is atm nothing you can archive while playing Multiplayer for longer therms like:

- Multiplayer Base building
- player-created missions like:
we need 100 tons of different minerals/machines to build up our station/or manufactoring rewarding you with 1 million credits or such. (not able to be done in solo mode)
Ill reward you with 200k for killing CMDR XXX for ganking me in my hauler.
and so on...
- Production
- conquest

And I Realy hope that such Features are Planed and comming ingame, because when not: it realy makes whole the Multiplayer mode Pointless.
When those Multiplayer Features are comming you just have the choice stay solo/switch mode and just take a look at this multiplayer features:
but when you want want do take a part of those features youre not able to switch back to solo mode.

I doubt very much these types of features will ever make it into the game. David Braben wanted to create the Elite single player experience with an online component. This is not and never will be a game like EVE or any other MMO. FD added online because they were told it's what people expect these days. Unfortunately they have no idea how to implement it properly.

That flood always stops when the next 'shiny' new game attracts their attention....The question is, Will FD stay true and keep the game to it's design philosophy, or crumble under the constant demand to add a 'win' button.
They have shareholders to please and a share price to bolster. so I'm guessing the latter.

I'm not a PVPer, I've tried but never particularly enjoyed PVP except in a very few games. I don't particularly want to play alongside experienced PVP gankers with dual joystick setups and their griefer hats on for obvious reasons.

If you want me (and others like me) to be in open play, the solution is simple: give me an *in-game* reason to play there; better mining, more variable trade prices (for more profit), trade resources or missions that only appear in open play. Otherwise, why would I make myself a target and subject myself to potential losses? No rational trader would do the same.

If you're right, it's more like throwing away the real potential features for having a real living universe with long therme Goals,
For making a everydays yesterdays single player experience, whats over if you reach Anaconda ;D If this is it, i wish you a happy single player boredome.

A good comment. And something which should be considered. There should be more incentive for players to enter open.

Nothing wrong with that. In fact I exactly suggested that several times in the past to make higher-end parts and loot exclusively available in open online.

What we have at the moment is the worst of both worlds.

Nope, we've just got the world that you don't like. You just don't happen to sit in the particular gap in the market that E: D is trying to plug. Happily, there are and will continue to be others targeted at you; please don't begrudge us ours.

Just an observation...
.
It seems that many people seem to think that ED is a multiplayer game with single player added on
In fact if you look at the history of Elite the opposite is true...Elite has, to the best of my knowledge, always been a single player game this is the first time they have added the ability to play with others in a social way. I believe the social aspect is very important to FD and Braben, much more than the pvp, hence why the modes are interlinked and interchangeable, it is the way it was intended from the very start in my opinion.
.
I have experienced some pretty frustrating gaming in my many years and nearly all due to open pvp. I stopped playing AoC because of players who treated open pvp as an excuse to get there jollies at the expense of others and when, doing what the same pvpers suggested, I brought friends they logged out...absolutely pointless playing.
I played Lineage 2 and watched my guild get deleveled and pushed off a server by another guild. The guild were from the USA and the aggressor was from the USSR go go no agenda gaming...Humans ya gotta love em
.
Bottom line is that I bought elite in the hope of being able to play to suit my mood, to play my way and not have a gaming style/ethos forced upon me. I play online to be social but that, over the years, sadly has not been the case in open pvp.
.
I fully intended to play release in open but think now I will just join a pve private group instead so enriching the open play galaxy....In the long run it is clearly going to be a preferable experience

Who said I want you to play open. I am perfectly fine with you playing solo. So I can have open all for myself!

I agree.... I think a "Harmless Sidewinder" should be off limits for piracy or PvP (Unless they attack first of course...)

That way - new players will get used to Open play & get a grip on co-op play and will be more likely to stay in open.

The trouble is - it ain't gonna happen... Some players will see a sidewinder and think (Oooo easy noob kill!)

What about times when I need to test my new set up? I can't go to the battle until my new gear is properly tested!

So effectively penalising people who don't want to play in open, terrible idea. The game is sold with a core mechanic which allows people the freedom to select solo/group/open as they wish when they wish, that is an awesome feature. I really don't get this obsession with trying to reduce that freedom and push players into a mode they may not want to be a part of.

This is not penalizing people who don't want to play in open... Rather, it is rewarding those who do. You still get to have your cake while also eating your neighbor's, but the folks who are willing to take on more risk will get more reward. How is this not fair? I think its a reasonable enough suggestion and worth considering. No one would be forced to do anything - one may still cower in isolation if they so desire with no added drawback.

So on this note you'd be happier if Frontier made two groups "Open PVE" and "Open PVP" and have them locked with separate commanders? Would that solve the issue the only caveat would be they would share the same galaxy but in effect be two very large private groups you could not switch between.
