Stranraer and Derry would both be ridiculously out of the way from Dublin :p There are ferries to Holyhead though, and then a nice drive across Wales to Cheltenham. Google says it takes 6 hours.

@bitsixteen: I lived in Fortlawn. I hear it's all different these days - big shopping centre and stuff.

I forgot, its my old job that made me go stranraer to belfast then drive to dublin for a weeks work...

Thanks guys, plenty to think about. Especially the zip wire. I just hope there's a toilet half-way across.

@Darren, how long since you were here. If you're talking about Blanch shopping centre, it was built around '94/'95. Great place. Both it and the M50 have really opened Blanchardstown up.

Heh, I remember that kind of stuff.

The guy that covered Fife was ill and I was asked to cover his area (cos that's where I'm from) for the day. I was told at 4pm the day before. They asked if I could get to Scotland in time and said if I left now I should get there by 10pm.

Then they wasted two hours prepping the car and me for the trip, so I left at about 6:30. They gave me a beefy rover. I got there in 4 hours. I'm still not sure how.

They did not shell out for a hotel or B&B, and wanted me back at work the day after.

Lovely people.

Thanks, Allen. Yes, we're hooked up on Skype now so... and day now. Any day... or minute... maybe tomorrow... yes, maybe tomorrow...

This forum is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to this forum...

Review

Excellent, I really liked it and quality of voice acting was great.
Looking forward to hearing more. As in Pulp Fiction, don't feel pressured into actually revealing what is in the box.

The accents threw me a little, it's funny - Elite seems such a British game but no reason for that to be the case. How add how my mind does that.

I wasn't quite sure on the age of the male character, he seemed a little old to be a 'green' pilot. Only a demo of course and actually could be an interesting backstory as to how he might have come to it late.

Diso/Deeso. Yeah, been said already. ;)

A strange one. At one point the male character says 'Jesus!' and it really shocked me. I guess no reason why religions would not continue on in the same vein for the next thousand years and I was surprised at my reaction.

Overall I would say that it made me think a lot about my preconceptions of the Elite world. Well Done.

@Allen, sorry, I wasn't getting at Chris, but more a combination of my own precrastination and the chances of us both being online and not busy working. :) Hope he gets better soon.

@Majere, thanks for your most excellent comments and thoughts.

Everything you said crossed my mind, too, except when Stephen says 'Jesus'. But had I thought of it, I think I would have left it in. It's an expletive with which most of us would be familiar today and yes, it's conceivable that in a realistic vision of Elite beyond the 31st century, some people of that persuasion might use it.

I, too, think of Elite as a wholly British game because it is. And in the '80s, we even more felt the gulf of the Atlantic because Americans didn't really have the Spectrum, or at least it wasn't prevalent there. So my experiences of Elite are that everything about it was British. However, when producing the demo, I decided to go for just six actors who I thought would act their socks off and Susan and Mark came to mind when writing this particular script. But though Elite is a wholly British game, the world it presents is obviously even more broadly multicultural than Earth, so I didn't really mind which accents I used. Also, I plan using some other nationalities as I feel they'll give a better 'sense' of multiculturalism and different races. I like the way Skyrim, for instance, is an alternate universe, but all of the races' accents are identifiable, even if sometimes hybrids.

In one of the next demos, the skipper of a Moray Starboat is very British, as is his co-pilot.

As regards the age, I'm not too hung up on this. The back story to the character of Stephen is that he's had many jobs in his lifetime and none were working out for him or paying the bills, so he buys this cheap-but-dodgy old Cobra Mk III to try and make some money in the same way people might nowadays buy taxi plates or apply for a HGV licence. Also, it's plausible that by the 31st century onwards, we'll be living much longer lives and therefore retire later.

Great comments, though, so please them coming.

Thanks a mill,
Paul

Top notch work Bitsixteen! Thanks for sharing that.

Here's hoping you can get involved with the Laveradio\Escape Velocity team. I love their work as well.

Besides that you should really go on producing your own stuff!! It has it's own distinctiveness (it's probably the US thing yeah). Pacing is good. I really like it. And OMG what's in the ' crate. :D

Also: when I read that you are going to do a multivoiced ATC .... whoooww... that would be epic.

Cheers!

BTW (By The Way ;) : on what basis do those actors allow you to share this with us? Is it practise for them or something?

Hi Voyager_NL, thanks very much for your kind words. I was very pleased with the results as it was how I heard the demo in my mind before recording began.

This was really part of a push to produce new demos that I could submit to games developers, so the voiceover artists are completely on-board as this is their demo as well, so hopefully we'll all get some game VO work from it... if not with Elite, then with other games. Also, the VOs are free to use it as their own demo. It's really a calling card. I thought it was better to produce finished samples rather than to just email games companies and say "Hi, I can record game VO for you." :)

Delighted you liked it.

Thanks,
Paul

Ah thanks for clearing that up... makes sense yep! Hope it works out for you (and the actors). I Just heard from a friend of mine that he's going to work (programming) for a big European games company. So I kind of know from his stories it is a harsh business. (here in Europe anyway)

Yes, I found it a little jarring. Especially considering that much of the statistics point to Islam being the fastest growing religion...

Seriously though, I imagine in the future that people would have identified the mythology in current religions (as with previous religions) and ditched them in favour of some New Age energy rubbish.

@Voyager_NL, yeah I'd heard it can be tough in the games sector, but some devs are bound to be better than others. Hopefully your friend will have a good experience with it.

@JohnStabler, this is an interesting topic. When we think of the polytheistic religions that were prevalent in the past (Norse, Roman, Greek, etc.), I'm sure worshippers of those faiths thought that their beliefs were the be-all and end-all. But there's no saying when current religions will meet their demise. Islam is certainly on the rise, although the New Age energy thing seems to taking a foothold as well.

Funny how no one mentioned the word 'Hell', which also appears in the dialogue, though granted, etymologically speaking, it's not exclusive to Christianity, either. :)

Cheers,
Paul

Who says that the word "Jesus" in the 33rd century is still a word with religious connotations? It might just be a mild epithet whose origin is lost in obscurity.

I think that there is a definite likeliness of religion still playing a pretty solid part in the 'lore' of the Elite universe. Humans clearly have a very strong propensity for tying in mythology with religion to the point where the two become very clouded. I suspect that there would be a pretty broad range of both religious and non religious groups represented. I see no reason for Christianity to not still having an ongoing representation.

I like the idea of the Technomage type characters showing up somewhere (B5 styles).

Oh and OP - Damn fine work. I really enjoyed that. The only thing that I found a little odd was that it bought to mind radio shows back when they'd have a whole bunch of people in a studio voice acting stories for the 'wireless'. It has it's own charm because of it :D
