Here's to hoping we get some big content in the pipeline soon...Keep up the good work FD but a looong way to go yet

Imagine if as soon as the game was released, the Emperor kicked the space bucket and War Were Declared. Can you imagine the backlash against backers who were in Alpha, Beta, and Gamma? "They can get to the action and have built up rep! We can't get there! We can't take part!"

Give people a week or two to get used to flying their damn ships before we start going all Babylon 5 on everything.

My first flight was to the warzone in eranin I killed fifteen or so ships. It was not overwhelming at all. Once I realised it was an endless furball I got bored, when they took it away I more or less quit playing. This is a pretty pathetic excuse for a story at this point. I'm sure it'll get better but the excuses for it are entertaining enough to fill my time till then.

-"It's that they released a game that really isn't finished. No story, tons of issues"

-"Hey come on give them a chance! Don't be so impatient! The game only released like a day ago!"

Traditionally you don't release a product till it's done.
People have been making excuses for gimped or missing game mechanics for years.
The game is out now. Full release. 1.0 for sale. There is no more room for excuses.
You don't ship a game without a story mission because you don't think players will be ready to handle it yet. FD isn't doing this for your benefit. Elite didn't ship with any story line missions because FD had no story line missions ready.

I think I've spotted some of the confusion here. It isn't a story mission that they're releasing, it's a story. It's not your epic quest, it's what is happening in the galaxy and it's something in which you can take part in or not.

This also means that it isn't going to run at your pace. Sometimes things might move too slowly for you, sometimes too quickly. You might go away for a weekend and miss a major event. In which case you'll have missed it, it won't be waiting for you when you come back.

I think all of this is a good thing and marks Elite out as significantly different from many of the other online games out there. Will it be to everyone's liking? Of course not, but for those who are willing to play this way then I think it will be a much more rewarding experience.

I love FD I love the game But its missing something....

Its frustrating right now, but I haven't lost faith at all.

I can't sell my hold full of onionhead on the black market as suggested in the news feed. Then that story vanished from the news feed. I thought I was doing something wrong, but I think this story thread may have gone a bit wonky.

There was all manner of wonkiness during beta and gamma, and FD addressed those issues....i've no doubt that this will be fixed too.

It is frustrating though.

Am I doing something wrong ???

I'm totally confused at this point.

Elite didn't ship with any story line missions because FD had no story line missions ready.

The problem with story will be that the whole galaxy can't take part. The narrative needs to be interesting enough to pull people in but can't be required because people without the skill or those who are too far away won't be able (or even interested) in joining.

i have to partially agree with the above statement. But I agree that it doesn't have a story because it can't have one for everyone. I would like to see multistage missions, but the story we will see is basically going to be "where will the capital ships be with their combat zones."

I think there are many players who simply don't even know GalNet exists. Or that it could lead them to certain places. I didn't use it at all during beta and gamma and now am trying to train myself to read it.

These arguments are interesting to me. We will have to see what FD does in the end but I think it's really a razor sharp edge t stand on because so many don't want or need a story and others so adamantly require one. I'd love to see a story but if I don't I will have just as much fun.

The game was crashing so badly prior to release FD were in a panic just trying to stabilize the game. Hopefully, more desperately needed content will be added soon as the game is BORING in its current state and wont satisfy most players for more than 50 hours.

I love FD I love the game But its missing something.... oh wait its missing missions and events that bring players together and carrier battles oh and NPC conversations where we can actually talk to them from a preset list of options ,what else hrmmmmm.. oh its missing thargoids and its missing the big events that we were supposed to get on release all I see is a small news clip about a system and some slaves wayyyy out there... what about the rest of the universe NO STORY for the rest of us??? don't get me wrong the basis of a great game is here but it needs SO MUCH MORE... please FD heed my call for content and Inject some real events and real battles into the game and not just in 1 system of a whole universe.

I want to fight in a fleet battle where only 1 side wins not a warzone that has NPC spawning for eternity I want to see other players fighting for the other side that I can attack and kill, I want them to drop cargo when their ship goes pop:) I want to get missions to jump into said carrier battle and my MISSION/objective is to destroy the enemy capital ships shield generator and then attack the thrusters or weapons all while stopping other players doing this to our capital ship(as a military mission that I can get at a certain rank).

Criticism is welcome I'm a total fan of the original and Frontier Elite II and this modern version still hasn't quite caught the magic of the original if you aree with this post rep me if you disagree rep me anyway for having a valid opinion :)

Oh boy, I'm getting my popcorn out for this one.

Tharigolds are coming. An actual story line where your locked into a progressive mission. Who knows..... But if we have serious cult opposition against a 3rd person camera, I doubt you'll see all your asking for. People even want chat and that's met with opposition.

Personally, I can't wait until the Tharigolds are in the game.

There's a big story arc that will be appearing in Galnet, but each faction in each system have also their own story that you can follow through the bulletin board missions:
There might be a famine in a part of a planet controlled by one of the factions, and they ask you to help them with the food supply. If you help them enough, the famine will be over.
Other factions might be involved in a civil war and they need help with food, weapons, medicines...
Another one might have problems with a faction of pirates, and you decide which one do you help. If you help the pirates and they win the struggle, that would unleash other stories (they might legalize some products that will unlock other missions).
The different stories are all there. They are not presented through fancy CGI cutscenes, though. There's where your imagination comes in.

that's all well and good but where is the multiplayer I want a mission where player A has to defend a station being built and player B has to sabotage it player a and b have to be the same RANK to obtain the mission to make it fair, also I want system wide chat with an option to turn off and I want missions to escort a ship somewhere or a mission to defend a carrier not the warzones we currently have where an Endless wave of NPC's spawn OVER AND OVER its just poor game design FD needs to IMMERSE the CMDR's and make us feel like were making our own story not give us bland warzones.... give us an arcing military storyline too and a MILITARY station that offers only military missions so I can l level up my rank therefore making the missions arc with my rank from courier missions to (take prototype torpedo to system (X) and destroy the carrier or corrupt senators ship) then make there be another mission where another CMDR is defending the corrupt senators ship..... anyway you get the picture this game could be SO MUCH MORE....

You've got to be kidding right?

Its the friggen release of the official game, it should have been in on release, but I guess that's expecting too much.

I guess the first person element that was "hinted" in the short promo video was just smoke and mirrors too.

My buddies told me while I was at work that there appears to be no difference between Gamma and Release ... I guess they weren't kidding.

It's been less than 24 hours. How about exercising some patience?

A story doesn't have to jump straight to the climax, and no I don't mean wait months but let things start to build up and grow.
.
We are starting to see it, slowing.
There is a slave revolt starting where one Pretender Senator is using her fleet to gain more position and power.
A Civil war when another Pretender Senator is backing one side over another.
Meanwhile Onion Head is being outlawed by the Federation, what will this lead to?
Kappa Fornacis is complaining but what about the system Onion head original comes from HIP will that be a another back door to trade.

i have been to the slave revolt system a few times, and each time the cap ship is just jumping in and the battle starts, i go away and log on later, go back and the big cap ship is just jumping in and the battle is just starting, i go away and when i log back in the big cap ship.... well you get the picture, these are just spawned events, never ending, nothing i do makes any difference to it.
We need some persistent NCP , real stories where things really change.
The game is great, i have liked what i played, but... I can seee all this getting old real quick unless something starts to happen.
Everything feels like a stage show put on just for me, and i can go watch it just the same every night of the week if i want.

Give people a week or two to get used to flying their damn ships before we start going all Babylon 5 on everything.

Babylon-5 - Day 1
Commander Sinclair arrives to take command at a far-flung outpost.

Tens of thousands of Shadow ships attack a dozen worlds.

Psy-Corps splits apart, and rogue telepaths set up hippie communes everywhere.

Earth Gov is taken over by hardline hawks and send a fleet to take over Babylon-5.

Giant robots attack! Cute girl pilots from Japan are the galaxy's only hope!

Babylon-5 - Day 2

jms walks off in a huff, complaining about idiot network executives meddling with his story.

Stories will take weeks to unfold, this is a giant game for everyone not a single player game.
Decisive short battles and stories that finish in a day (24 real hours) will just lead to everyone complaining that they have work/school/uni/life and are missing everything.
If you can play 12hrs a day every day great but i'm afraid you will find the story very very slow as its likely to be based on playing a few hours a day so everyone has a chance to take part.

Yeah Story? Not so much. Started a story line. Yeah Not so much either. It isn't very noticeable. Guess you have to keep using your imagination to keep filling in all the blanks. Hell mine is working overtime.

I can understand what your saying, but ED wanted an online persistant universe, one that continues to evolve even if you are offline, so having battle replays every time you enter a cap ship or conflict zone just doesn't seem right.
Even if it so done for johnny when he comes at 8pm, and Ricky who gets home at 11pm. Or pete who is off for a few days.
When you except a mission the timer doesn't stop if you go offline, but you can still see the start of a battle you have been to before.
No it should be that if you missed a particular event or battle, there will be others around the inhabited galaxy starting or happening right now or later on, some for x reason, some for y reason, or because x caused y.
Hopefully in time maybe even because i did this or that.

You Imps are so lucky! What did us feds get for "story"? Oh there's a new drug called "onionhead". I hot footed it to Kappa Fornacis expecting to find special missions on the BBs.....Missions for tranporting the drug, missions for resourcing it, bounties for major drug lords, pirates destroying freebooters over said drug etc etc..... What did we get?

Oooh a new rare commodity! Indistinguishable from all the others! A whole THREE tons of it! And a generic BB asking for the usual "x tons of rutile wanted!" for no readily apparent reason.

So basically they added another rare commodity, and then typed up a paragraph about it and put it on galnet.

Yes these text message stories are just so easy to type up, but there is no substance to them, no in game action related to them.
In Beta when people said it lacked depth, every one said "it's beta" wait till Gamma or release.
In Gamma same thing.
Well now it is released and still no backbone added to the skeleton yet, and now it's " give it time for the story to unfold" well i am waiting, patiently again.

And another thing i have asked before, why was the orca ship made playable, who's got one and what do you use it for.
No passengers or missions for it yet.
