Elite / Frontier What would prevent *you* from buying E4?

Some excellent posts here! Liquilla, do you know if Frontier takes any notice of posts such as this? I realise we are an unrepresentative sample, but as you have a free focus group, I'd like to think Frontier took some notice of us?

Absolutely, we try and read everything on these forums. You wouldn't have the likes of myself, Stefan and Michael here if we weren't interested in the what you have to say :)

Thanks for that! It's good to hear. You know if you implement all the ideas here E4 is going to be such an amazing game....in about 2018:)

Hi Michael,
Understood! Though I almost feel we have a kind of concensus in most areas, at least in terms of staying true to the original spirit of the Elite series. Platforms, and single player vs MMO(spit) seems more controversial, but I'm sure David can just release both for all platforms so no problem!!!

btw I've fired up ffe3d recently, and am amazed how well the physics/astronomy engine holds up so many years on

Considering the lively discussion on some features, implementing them all might not be the best idea :)

Michael

True, certainly not all at once, although maybe by way of expansion packs new features could be added as you go along? I noticed this with the, you know that game that tried to be as good as Elite 3 but wasn't.
Ok I admit it, I can't mention its name on this forum:eek:

Plausible Deny-ability

You mean the Xgames:D

I couldn't possibly confirm nor deny that Spacegamer, at least on this forum!:D
All I can say is that Egosoft ran a rather cheeky ad for one of their games some time back which might have offended DB, so I am certainly staying away from that one!:D

I see nothing wrong with liking the X series, especially while waiting for Elite IV.
But once Elite IV does come along, my heart's desire will have been fulfilled,
(I hope ! :D)

I also see nothing wrong with mentioning the X series on here,
as we don't seem to have the same stuck-up attitude as their forum users have,
(try praising Elite on their forum and see what reaction you get !)

I agree, X is the only thing keeping me going in the realm of space sims.. as craptastic as it is, flight model and jumpgateariffic as it is.. more of an economic sim than a flight sim..

but it's got a cockpit, with (rudimentary) instrumentation. more than i can say for vendetta, or EVE, or vegastrike, or others.. Desperately needs landing-on-planets, better ship modelers, et al.. but hey, it runs on linux. So its a candidate.

I still hope there's room for a Linux version, assuming there'll be a PC version, since it's coming out for the OpenGL'ified PS3, doesn't seem like much of a stretch..

I submit that a dedicated server model is best, if It's going to be a multiplayer game in any capacity.. at least that way we have the chance of playing in galaxies where game-ruining retards are managable, and PCers/Consolers can both have a place to play. (assuming they can play together at all)(of course what's the point of having console versions if they're all incompatible with each other)(well the consoles already are incompatible with each other, why have the game subjected to those limitations?)(...unless it isn't going to be multiplayer afterall)(i'd hate to have to be faced with buying 3 different consoles just to play with three different friends)(I'm certainly not getting buying a new console past my wife, PC parts are a lot easier to justify... and cheaper)

And finally; Steam! many games released on steam work just fine under WINE/Linux, and they're all over the dedicated server model.. and Frontier is no stranger to their platform! Even if there's no native Linux version (tho having one would be ideal, for old Elite fans and new alike), please try to at least be WINE friendly, otherwise, I won't be able to justify buying it at all..

Repeating myself again and again,

This made me chuckle ^_^

Inter Console platform mplay? only if one company owns both console.
So Nintendo Sony and MS are unlikely to work together coöperating in a joint online infra structure venture. So dream on furhter. It is theoreticly posible but on corporate level there totaly not willing to.

Shadow run on Xbox360 live vs Windowslive Vista. Both online services owned by MS. then it's practicly possible on any level and also done. The game is the proof.

xb360 vs PS3, I can imagine some big Triple A dev requested it but get lost in it. No possitive response. So dumped the efort early on. would be cool Ps3 vs xbox360 and even PC.
Imagine two rival corporaton coopperate a online venture in one off there core competition fields. That would be so unreal.

as long as the sky is blue

and dollars are green, money rules the world (sadly).
of course no console interacting in web why should they, as long as we buy all the crap they release and we do believe in those "must haves" they proclame:p

prevent me from buying Elite4? nothing except a empty wallet:rolleyes:

I agree that space should be black because it is black, it is what it is. As for fancy stellar objects, they exist too, but are mostly very far away. Elite IV should reflect this also when jumping from system to system, where the distance from, for example, the galactic core, changes, the sky should also change. That would be cool without over doing the tutti-fruity thang. If you want the sky full of colourful nebula's, then head out there! Problem solved! :)

Thats a great idea but would it be even possible to do it in a game.?

I think Spacegamer, that is a question only DB could answer himself, but who really knows what the new Elite might be capable of? It would be too big an ask I think, to have every star mapped in its proper place depending on your point of observation, but perhaps large, highly luminous stellar objects could be.

What would prevent me from buying Elite 4.

Same thing that's stopped all of us over the last 15 years from buying it. Frontier will never make it. It's nothing but a fantasy that's never going to happen.

I always perfer to think that they have a code monkey locked in sub basement at Frontier towers working on the game as we speak:D
And they do have two major anannounced project in the works,so who knows.
