The X-Rebirth Thread

I posted a couple of early access X-Rebirth videos to my channel, I'm glad I pre-ordered.

It's Scott Manley!

Really happy to see you on these forums, I just watched both of those videos and the game is shaping up to be quite interesting, though I am still on the fence about it, with not being able to fly down to those gorgeous planets.

I was curious why you had not done a video on Pioneer space sim yet :)

Also, I very much look forward to your Elite Dangerous videos!

Keep being awesome.

It's all about time, people are always wanting updates to regular series and new stuff takes time.
And yes, I'd love to make Elite: Dangerous videos but there's not much I can show.

I'm still trying to find the X Superbox with all the previous ones in there. I have the originals of the first 3 but the Superbox apparently does not have their DRM...I think it was Starlock or something like it ? I was reading about it recently. I thought I'd try to find the superbox as that is supposed to be "clean" allegedly.....I don't know for sure.

I try ebay occasionally as well. I remember X being good as I (and others) were desperate for anything remotely like ELITE. :)

The new X looks good but I'm sure it will have things like steam/online activation etc etc I don't know for sure so I'll stick with the older ones for the present. :) ......if I can find that superbox. :)

I think it was StarForce - and I thought it only applied to X-2?

That's the one yes...........I think it was the second one yes the first had something else but the big box had nothing which is why I was after that one. :)

Goodness I was thinking Starlock from ELITE Spectrum version ROFL

I check the humble weekly sales every friday. You can imagine my excitement when I saw all the X series. I thought finally DRM free/diret download awesome, then I scroll down and saw it was steam only.

:(

Ahhh well, I do own all those titles boxed. I've been after the superbox because it no longer has starforce DRM on it but it's hard to find (yes I've been checking ebay regularly). Digital copies of them all would have been fantastic but it's not to be......for me at least. :)

A great pity but no biggie. ;)

I'm curious to peoples objections to Steam? I have used it in the past and while a bit of a pain, it worked very well. As far as the X series goes, as far as I know you only need Steam to download it, and then you can use the non steam .exe supplied by Egosoft.

Then why not just sell it without needing Steam at all?
I am forced to use Steam now to play Godus. I am not happy about it, but I paid to play the beta of Godus, and I am damn well going to play it. I should have a choice, but I don't and that is, I think, what most people object to. Steam is removing choice, it is becoming a monopoly in the games market.

I don't like having to have Steam running in the background just to be able to play games. If all Steam ever was, was a download client, I wouldn't mind that. That is what Origin is. For all the criticism EA and Origin may or may not deserve, I can run Sims 3 without needing Origin once I have downloaded and installed the games.

I've heard stories of people having their Steam accounts blocked, and therefore not able to play the games they paid for. There is also the scenario of what if Valve go bankrupt? And don't say it won't happen, after what's happened in the financial world in the last number of years, even the biggest companies can go bust. If you have a lot of games on Steam, and no way to play them without Steam, and Valve go bankrupt, you have then lost games you paid good money for.

I also have little interest in Steam simply because 99% of the games on there do not interest me.

There are lots of reasons not to use Steam, and I've only mentioned the tip of the iceberg.

Well if you have problems running stuff in the background.

Windows kernel or schedular handels a few dozen tread from many services proceses and aplications in the background. Most are idle. But non the less a list of 20 to 40 thing running. 5 or so active may be much more. Most light treads.

So do you delve deep into OS to shut off pletora of services and background apps just to run lean and mean?

Make no sense to me.

First you need a firewall or virusscanner gaurding your open os save. Then with today multicore CPU it is no problem. They can handle extra few light treads.
You need a decent CPU today a quadcore and decent GPU and gaming is no problem.

For battle field with it web based portal battlelog and origin. The same thing.

What might help espacialy in iosteam and cached game worlds is a fast high bandwide HDD.
Currently have a 128SSD W7 and 256SSD W8 and 2TB HDD upgrade in the last year.
Got a 256SSD for the other game rig still running Vista but have a W8 licence ready.

Also windows is a event bases OS. So have dozen idle tread doesn't matter much.

So is it more between the ears.

My opinion my PC is a multipurpouse used device so must support a lot of thing I can do with it. So lot of things installed and running. So if the CPU GPU and mem are up to spect there is no need to run lean and mean. But use the OS and apps in full feature.

If you have under spect hardware that not steam to acount for. But more that you are a gamer or non gamer with not the right stuff to run average game.

My old rigs are up to spects and run modern games. So no problems here.

I bought X- Rebirth. Its a loosly remake. So as previous mention by some one. Its very different.
The got a fresh deved modernise engine tackling the key problems of the Xseries.

That not realism.
That not a full scale galacy as play ground.

No its what realy matter bad UI and very limited AI.
And with that multicore support with fine grain job solution. Instead easy smeasy task spreading over treads.

So it acualy a new kind of game within the x universe theme.

Well if you have problems running stuff in the background.

I have no problems running things in the background (I am sure I never said I did) but I don't like needing a program running just to run a program that shouldn't need a program running .... you know what, forget it, this thread isn't about Steam

X-Rebirth and previous X series uses steam. So very much ontopic.
I buy ED if it come to steam. Or is retail avaible.
Same for star citizen.
Also there are so many games out to much and little time.

Considering I have X-Beyond The Frontier, X-tension, X2 The Threat, X3 Reunion and X3 Terran Conflict all on discs ... I think I'll have to disagree with what you said there.

They are on Steam now, but not Steam exclusive. X Rebirth is available on disc, but is really Steam only as you still have to validate Rebirth via Steam.

Steam is not a good thing, and nothing I can say will ever show that to you, it is something you'd have to realise yourself.

Steam works for me, but origin had problem. But that new. But I have 2 game rigs.
Intel / nv on vista.

AMD / AMD on W7 W8 Vista

BF3 runs only on the AMD a few mobth further and few patches further it runs on both.

As for rebirth it is the only pure SP game. And it is very different then the previous series.
Its a surprice game, going to try it out. And see if it my thing or not.

My first X games are all on CD with a nice key, no activation or any silly thing like that. I can install it on a computer now, later or anytime.

I suspect the new one will have online activation so bye bye to X for me unless it is standalone media with a key (no online requirement needed) ;)
