Met My First Hacker Today

That's enough publicity for this person he has achieved his goal, he now has people googling him looking up his twitch feed, he has got his "center of attention " something he obviously craves. Move along please CMDRs

It's strange. Not long ago I was reading a lot on these forums about the opposite. That almost everything is being done server side. I wonder now which is true.

OMG!!! bit of reading around google, there are actualy people playing this game, that are willing to pay up to $500 for a cheat or hack, then $50 - $100 a month to keep it viable... COMPLETE SHOCK.

The big shock, is that it's FD selling the hacks to them. After realising how much money they've lost by not making the game Pay to Win, they've gone into the hacks market to recoup some money.

What?.... No I don't hear voices!...... No, I'm talking to these poeple on the Internet... Of course they can hear me..... What do you mean 'They're all men pretending to be women'?.... But they all really like me and find everything I say really funny.....

Think I'd better go put the Tin-Foil Hat back on.

i'd find it really funny if it was FD doing it, taking a months money from them and then banning all their accounts so they had to buy the game again and again :D

In my experience, what goes around comes around. Their personality issues will soon take their toll. The 5mins fun they get from their lulz will never out balance the darkness in their lives. However I get a lifetime of lulz from them.

Is it against forum rules for a member to ask another member who has encounterd one of these cheats for the names of 3 of them via a private message?

No, it's not. It's also not against the rules to discuss details on other forums, like Reddit, that can't be discussed here. Most MMOs have their main, official forums, and then other forums that players go to where they can discuss off limits matters. Alt Forums, if you will.

I'm not trying to be negative, I'm just trying to shed some reality into the subject. How would they watch 1 person's stream? they would first have to install some kind of network traffic recorder into the machine but wait, they have no right to record my network traffic, that breaks invasions of privacy laws, POLICE can't do that here in the USA w/out a warrant. They don't have a client/server setup that already has it there. So what if they DO add one, BAM every program that launches will patch it, so now they have 300,000 streams coming at them simultaneously (I don't think they're equipped to deal with that much inbound data), let alone search through it for what they need to find. Hence, "they would have to eyeball and watch the cheater actually cheating".

PeerReview, Carbon, Watchmen. 3 technologies from academia (one of which was paid for by Microsoft) all of which try to solve the problem of cheating in P2P. They don't operate in real time and they require non-interested parties to get involved. I guess from the logging that FD are adding they are building something akin to this. BTW, they are called overlays because they can be added over the top of a basic P2P system with (supposedly) very little work.

I personally think that FD found that P2P is harder than C/S model and therefore took longer than they expected to get it working and therefore the securing of the system (of which academic papers exist (EASES is one, RACS is another)). The beta will make exploits like the dumbfire exploit less likely though won't make outright cheating go away.

You can't name and shame. If you say my name and I haven't been cheating I would be extremely upset. You need to be able to back any claim up with evidence. Video it. If you have an NVidia card you get shadowplay with it.

While I am not in favour of big bang things, FD should make a big announcement that a number of players have been banned, with video footage of the cheaters in action and a detail report of why and what happened to them. This will cause some of the remaining cheaters to sit up and take notice. Some will quit the game altogether and some will go back to play normally. It is a very small minority doing this.

ALWAYS REMEMBER: the first rule of a hacker is to convince others that hackers do dot exist.

Be aware of people minimizing the problem.
I quitted more than one game forever because developers couldn't face the problem. Will it be the same with ED?

Some of you have no clue about how anti-cheating works.

Even with the best detection people will still make their own private hacks and update them frequently, sure FD could add some sort of anti-cheat... but there is no better anti-cheat than a good community.

Everyone who played any FPS game online knows that the best way to avoid them is to play on a server owned by the community, with people actively reporting and keeping it clean.

So for now I think we should keep reporting them, and ask FD for feedback on the bans after some time.

The game is ours, the legit players are the majority and Open play is our community server.

There is a app that can find players IP addresses and ddos them into lagging or disconnecting, the other day a player approached me and I got disconnected from the game, it could of been a bug and I couldn't bother to check router logs and I don't even know if the sky modem logs ddos attacks.

Somewhere in the ED code is stuff to make your ship aim a specific point in space, namely the docking computer, code from this can be used for a aimbot hook and if done right are 100% accurate and one of the biggest game killers.

So if the game can be hacked here are a few of things FD could do in my opinion.

1, Spend lots of time and effort to try and stop it. This pulls resources away from other areas and also leads to escalation.
2, Get people to report cheats, once proved lock them away in a super solo mode. By super solo I mean none of their actions feedback to the galaxy simulation, their view of the world is only affected by non-cheaters. They can then do whatever they like but it has zero impact on others.
3, Forget open for the moment (I think it is a lost cause). Put all your effort into providing a lot of engaging PvE content. This will keep the Solo and group players happy, it also gives the open players something to do if no one else wants to play solo.
4, Switch to a full server client relationship.
5, Give us a true offline game.

I can't see 4 or 5 this happening. Especially number 4 as it is expensive especially given we are playing a twitch based game and not a standard mmo. Number 5 would require huge rewrites of the code.

I would prefer they go with 3, followed by 2, while putting a very small resource into 1. I think this is the only way they can go with the games current architecture as P2P will always be abusable no matter how much resource you put into it.

option 6: put all cheaters and griefers into a subset of open so they only ever meet other cheaters and griefers (wasn't this in the design docs?)

The least bright gamer today knows how to use anti-virus. Only old people who barely know how to use e-mail get infected anymore.

At 63, I guess I fall in the "old people" category you are talking about. I am in computers since the 1980s, I have built all my PCs myself, have been programming with all kind of languages since DOS times, in my private life and in my job (on large company systems). I have also been gaming for 25 years almost daily. I know well how to use e-mail and I guess I could probably teach you one or two things. :)

Blocking and banning IPs ?
C'mon many ISPs in many country use floating IP, just reset you router and tada new IP.
No no, it can only be done "per account" and what was planned in the design docs is the way to do it : flag them so they can only match with each others.
