Guide / Tutorial Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy

I assume "Helium rich" from the first post means like this gas giant here? I was looking at percentages say if it was 28% Helium instead of 26, didn't realise it was a whole other type! Pleasantly surprised, hadn't seen one before (not that I bother to scan many gas giants).

Edit: aaaaand all the gas giants in the system are helium giants. Very strange system, but quite cool.

Just found my first Earth like planet some 1000L+ away from Earth. How rare are these planets excatcly? This is my frist exploration run away from home, so Im not that experieced yet :) I wondering if was I should gead home already and maybe get first exploration on this baby :)

I've scanned about 500 systems and still I've yet to find one so I'd say they're pretty rare.

I guess you are going towards the core? From Monkeyhead to Heart/Soul was 5k ly of mostly M class stars with dead planets.
On the way to the bubble I did drop as low as possible for a bit and found a few white dwarves. The only ones I found on my whole trip.

Yes, but I haven't decided if I'll visit Sagittarius A, or pass 1000 ly below it. Still have 7k ly to decide. And then continue straight ahead or turn left? Choices, choices...
And my hull is at 85%...not great, but still OK.

I was thinking about going straight down from Sagittarius A after I get there. Kinda wonder how far down you can make it there. It will be a while though before I set out again, for now my ship is only travelling in the 4th dimension. I hope 1.1 releases soon. First to sell my data, and planning already took too long for my liking in the low density of the outer arms. Maybe I'll do some trading first, a bit of efficient flying and docking before getting back into the point and wait grind that exploration boils down to 98% of the time. Dodging asteroids in rings for fun is about as exciting as it gets in exploration. I 'landed' on one for fun. Good thing I had shields as the rock keeps rotating, grinding against your ship that wants to stay in the same spot.

I don't think I'll go back to the edge, it was very dark and lonely out there. Seeing the stars return as I got closer to Sol was welcoming.

I dropped below the clouds on the way to the Bubble. Very bright Galactic disk surrounded by blackness, 1000ly down.

I imagine there's a lot more in the sky where you are!

Went to visit the Witch Head Nebula its a 1700 LY round trip. I gained 2.4m from exploring and found two earth type planets.

This is from one of the systems I visited while going to the Witch Head

Screenshot_0023.jpg

Also found some 100% metal planets, and about 10 planets that where terraformable

Next destination will be the California nebula.

I have tried to find some exploration data to buy around the area but i'm wondering if it is possible. Also have you noticed that there is lvl 2 and lvl 3 scans listed in the statistics tab. Strange as I used a detailed surface scanner.

hi, buying system data that is far away from inhabited space is not possible, as far as i know. those lvl 2 and 3 scans are not yet implemented in game.

CFT with a 2.5AU semi-major axis. Nothing odd about that, surely?

Yeah, but round a class B star? :O

Screenshot_0163.jpg

Oh well, here's one of those really blue HMC planets to troll me, I'm not falling for that at least.

Nope, that's a CFT water world.

I GIVE UP, YOU WIN STELLAR FORGE.

That is odd. I lose my ability to estimate hab zones for the bigger stars, but I'd expect about twice that or more.

Here's one I just found at the opposite extreme: an Earth-like world at 0.16 AU.
(I couldn't stay away. Meant to give it a break, ended up touring Orion. Hey, I was first explorer to Saiph and Alnitak, y'know...) :D

I went round a lot of red dwarfs this time out and found a few surprises - several Class IV gas giants, couple of Earth-likes, few more Water worlds.
At least it wasn't a total load of iceballs. :)

That's the least green and blue earth-like I've ever seen!

I tried to do the main stars in Orion but got stuck on Epsilon Orionis (aka Alnilam, the middle star of the belt) because it seems to be in the middle of nothing. Having given up on that I also gave up on 44 Iota Orionis which is one of the sword stars seeing as it was similarly too far to get to.

I just returned from my first explorer's survey. It was a short one - 1000ly out and then I turned around and came back. Mostly, I was terrified by how small a distance I had covered on the map.

It was tremendously fun. For one thing, I didn't worry a whole lot about AFKing for a minute or two. ;)

Thanks, Nutter, for your advice and encouragement to us wanna-be explorers!!!

At 20k ly from Sol I discovered the most interesting system so far. The primary star was a black hole, 10 ls from it a white dwarf, 100 ls from it a neutron star, 1000 ls away a type K star. And orbiting all of them at 15k ls was a single moonless planet, a 28-earth mass water world with NO atmosphere and consisting 75% of ice instead of rock like the most planets. Very strange.

I've just returned from a journey that took me from civilization to the Lagoon Nebula, to the Orion Neblua, to Sagittarius A* and back. It was a long way. I scanned a LOT of systems and planets and stars. The UI only shows 10 pages of data.

Please tell me it can only hold so many pages at once.

Please.

If I were you, I would hold off on selling that data for a few days. When 1.1 hits, you get a 50% bonus on first finding objects. For a trip like that, the bonus will be a non-trivial sum, but they are NOT backdating it.

Guys... one question which bothers me for some time: there is this talk about improving AFMUs in next patch, that they should be now able to fix thrusters, scanners and whatnot. Except the hull. Is this really making AFMU more useful for us explorers? I mean, on my last trip I've lost 93% of hull due to overheating, but everything on my ship was working just fine afterwards. Was I just very lucky, or the hull damage caused by the heat (which is pretty much only danger out there) doesn't damage modules at all? Because if it's the latter, I don't see why should I start carrying AFMU.

Every time your hull takes damage, your modules also take damage. You can see that in your right menu (opened by "4") where you also turn the modules on/off.
It's usually just a couple of percent increasing over time.

(which is pretty much only danger out there)

I see three dangers:

1. Interdiction in the twilight zone
2. Overheating too close to stars
3. Emergency SC drop to avoid hitting something.

All of them should be trivial, but keeping high levels of concentration up, when the travel is tedious, is easier said than done. I have a routine that pretty much avoids #2, but even so, getting distracted at the wrong time could be a huge problem. On my current trip, I have managed to avoid #2 completely, but have lost 4% due to #3. My problem there is playing 'chicken' with a planet you are approaching. The scanner is ticking away, so you want to stay pointing at the planet to avoid losing time having to go round again, but you may be going too fast to get it scanned in time before you crash.

... on which subject, is anyone else annoyed at the 'slow down' warning? It seems to me to be close to useless, since if you are not already on minimum throttle, you will definitely not stop in time. But I regularly get it when the throttle is already minimised, so there is nothing I can do to slow down.

Thanks for replies. I wasn't really paying attention to that module percent damage. From all I know my Hauler was acting pretty much norm with the hull burnt out to 7% (can't get much worse than that, eh?). Hence my dilemma about AFMU.

hi, so you actually made it home with 7% hull hauler? how far away you made that mistake? i'm also in hauler and i burned down to 34% 6000ly from sol and i'm pretty scared of that last 500ly.

LOL, i just realized, these two together are going to be an issue...

Data can be sold 1 page at a time
If you are first to sell an object you get a congratulations breakdown and 50% extra cash

I mean, when you go out remotely to areas where nobody has been before, almost all systems will be first to explore. Presuming you will get a separate pop up for each one... so instead of selling 10 systems one at a time, you sell 10 and then have to acknowledge 10 pop ups :D

#firstworldproblems :p
