Guide / Tutorial Nutter’s explorers guide to the Galaxy

do npcs that interdict you get more aggressive in solo mode? because i will soon be coming back with 1000+ systems scanned, and i don't want to risk anything.

After spending weeks on trading and not getting interdicted once, yesterday I returned from the pilgrimage to Sagi A and got interdicted THREE TIMES. The first time was while I was fuel scooping/scanning a star - something I have been used to leaving while going to make a cup of tea on occasion. Not recommended when within 1000ly of Sol!! Fortunately I was able to evade. The second time I was not so fortunate but managed to boost away and get back into Supercruise only to be interdicted again and escape. I found the closest station and have since 3am this morning been in Heng Dock selling all my data - it is taking HOURS.

I shall be glad when 1.1 comes along, although slight mixed feelings as my other spacecraft is a Python.

So, in Solo it is not an easy ride. Not sure how it is in comparison to Open, but I like the hi-res screenshots.

Have fun out there.

If you got good heat resistance you can hang close to the star if you think an npc is gonna have a go at you. Sometimes you can get them to turn into the star when they try to interdict you.

I was just being lazy, didn't even really need the fuel. I was too busy working out where to go - after 23kly aiming for Sol I actually just wanted the closest Fed. station I could find. Next time I will be better prepared.

Crap....

I just sold 2.5M worth of data. And then saw that they added a 1st finders bonus between the last time I read the beta patch notes and today.

That's....a potentially large amount of profit I missed out on.

Annoyed......

i just made stupid mistake 6kly from sol... now my hauler is at 34% hull. any suggestions on what to do on my way back, for maximum chance of surviving?

I feel your pain - those bonuses are NOT retrospective.

As for avoiding interdictions on the way home: AT THE MOMENT (anything could change) if you drop out of SC as soon as you see a pirate appear on your scanner, it will not be there when you go back to SC. Since none appear 'instantly', you should be able to avoid them all - as long as you are not making a cup of tea. On the way out on my pilgrimage, I am doing one jump at a time, targeting the next interesting system en route. When I get near the first signs of civilisation, I will switch into jump, scoop, jump, scoop mode, and when I think I have enough in my tank, to jump, jump, jump mode.

See my comments, above. Aim for the nearest outpost, and sell as soon as you are parked. If you have a LOT of stuff to sell, consider going on a sabatical for a few days once parked, so you get the bonuses after 1.1 goes live.

I decided to log back in today and land my Asp Explorer back at my 'home' star.
After Veil Nebula West, the remaining 1200 ly seemed to take forever but I made it eventually.
63k repair bill for 68% hull, and 0% Integrity left which the game wanted 585k for. I didn't pay it straight away and moved some components around, configuring my Asp back to a trader to check what happened to my old trade routes sometime later. (After 1.1 hits as I have data for 1400 systems to sell. Browsing through the data is already excruciatingly slow atm, takes 10 sec for a page of 20 to load) After putting my discovery equipment in my Hauler, I switched back to my Asp and noticed the integrity cost had dropped to 319k. So I sold the other expensive components, didn't drop more. After switching back and forth to my Hauler, integrity repair cost was now 13K. Repaired, bought back the components and all seems fine, 572k saved.
Yet when I tried to fit the rest of the cargo modules in, it won't let me. Max mass exceeded. My Asp can only carry 473t now? When I look it up, max should be 840t.
What determines the max mass? Has it been changed? Does it degrade over time?
.
Edit: Nm, figured it out. Thrusters determine max mass, makes sense. I dropped to 4D thrusters to save weight, unfortunately there are no class 5 modules in my port, and I should not go flying around before selling my exploration data, which I should not sell before 1.1 Signing off for now.
.
I retraced my steps on the map. Full route was Witch head, Spirograph, NGC 1999, Messier 78, Running man, Orion, Bernard's loop, Flame, Horsehead, Butterfly, Thor's helmet, Seagull, Rosette, Jellyfish, Monkey head, Attempt to reach outer arm got stuck at 8.7k ly from sol, NGC 1931, Soul, Heart, NGC 884, NGC 281, Bubble, NGC 7822, Cave, Elephant's trunk, Blinking, Pelican, North America, SADR, Veil west and Dumbbell.
.
Horsehead and Veil Nebula West were the prettiest, NGC 884 the most interesting due to its diversity, neutron stars, black holes, super giants all next to each other. Plenty of beautiful sights, yet also periods of intense monotony with lackluster Nebula at the end. The journey from NGC 1931 to Soul and Bubble to NGC 7822 made me question my sanity...
.
Coming home was pretty cool in the end. I got interdicted a few times on the home stretch, submit and speed away was sufficient. I still had my D4 shields for that reason. Arriving in my home system, seeing the green contacts on the radar and getting a friendly greeting before docking was nice. I entered the dock very carefully, hovered a few meters above the pad for a while to breathe it all in before finally touching down after 4 weeks. Time to stretch those legs.

i imagine u sold all components that were worn for lower price than u would sell unworn components. if u compare sell price of worn out and fixed one is it the same? i cant check that now but i will when i get back. if u can do that that is exploit and will probably get fixed. so i say u still lost that 500k+ u just didnt notice. but if not then u r lucky.

Nice one SvennoJ. Looks like we followed pretty much the same route although you snuck in a few more nebulae that I missed. A bit miffed I missed NGC 884 if it was that good, can't see myself flying out that way again just for one nebula. Interesting that you only have 1400 systems to sell though as I had over 2100!

What route did you take between Bubble and 7822? I opted to try a straight line but in hindsight I wish I had just crossed directly to the Orion arm rather than battle so much of the sparsely occupied inter-arm space.

You guys that go 20k ly are crazy. It is so incredibly boring when you go over a bunch of stars that have NOTHING interesting for like 1000 ly :p Trying to find the interesting ones, but not sure what I'm even looking for. Usually I look for big or blue ones :D

I'm 19k ly away, and in last 5-6 hours I scanned about 90 Neutron stars and several MS stars. Go down, or up for about 1000 ly or more. That's where the good stuff is.

Also, Neutron stars are not so scary as I thought they would be, just keep them behind you when you throttle up.

Crazy is, as crazy does. I have no idea why I'm hooked so badly on exploration, but I know for a fact that the next jump will reveal something utterly mind boggling.

Just found my first Earth like planet some 1000L+ away from Earth. How rare are these planets exactly? This is my first exploration run, so Im not that experienced yet :) I was wondering if I should fly home and turn the data in, so I can have first exploration on this baby :)

Earth like worlds are a subcategory of Terrestrial Water Worlds so of course they are rare.
All in all they are fairly common tbh based on the cheer amount of systems to explore it is just a question of luck : in my travels, nearly 2K systems explored, i have found 9 of them for 99 TWW .... makes the maths easy lol.

I checked my balance before and after, minus the modifications I did, I spend about 87k total on repairs. Most of the modules I swapped weren't damaged, repaired with AFU before docking. The hull was the most expensive anyway. Much better than the 650k I was looking at when I just landed.

What about the systems that I allready first discovery, how are they gonna cash me, the extra money? said that, I like to explore, but I dont know to start now, or wait for 1.1

If you have turned in the data, I do not believe the bonus is retroactive. The 'discovered by' tag should be though.

NGC 884 is not a Nebula, or at least not drawn in game. I noticed an odd star pattern on the way from Heart to NGC 281, so I turned around to investigate.
ManInSky.png
When looking at the map for what caused that star pattern I noticed I missed the Crab pulsar, which isn't far from the Monkey head and NGC 1931. Was kinda disappointed I missed that, glad I found NGC 884. It was the first time I got to play with a black hole. The previous ones were too close to a star to see any gravitational lensing.

I went in a straight line as well from the bubble to 7822, aiming for S171 46. It went pretty well with 36ly jump range, still had to drop a bit down in the end as the route started to zig zag too much for my liking. (I was travelling at the target height already) Usually I only need 4 or 5 jumps for 120ly steps, it started creeping past 8 jumps for the same distance. The 36ly jumps still didn't help trying to reach the outer arm from the Monkey head. It looks like there is a bridge 5K ly past the Heart and Soul Nebula, looks dense enough all the way across on the zoomed out map. Yet I had my fill of long distance travel by then. There's not a lot to see that far out.

I guess you are going towards the core? From Monkeyhead to Heart/Soul was 5k ly of mostly M class stars with dead planets.
On the way to the bubble I did drop as low as possible for a bit and found a few white dwarves. The only ones I found on my whole trip.
