Development on "The Outsider" stopped?

That's terrible news if true,

Hoping Frontier will give some clarification on whats happening as it seems to be cancelled/not cancelled at the moment.

Fingers crossed.

Will Frontier ever make a proper game again? (i.e. not a cutesy, kiddy, deep-as-a-puddle gimmicky game) 200 staff, and the games are only one step up from tamagotchis.

There have been plenty of deep, involving games bestselling recently, so it's not as if kids and simpletons are the biggest market.

This sounds like i'm flaming, but really i'm just frustrated.

Don't worry. I feel the same way too :mad:
Or at least I did, until I got over the mental hurdle of thinking that E4 might some day be released.
Now the fluffy tigers aren't so annoying :smilie:

Feel the same as you guys. still hold out a little hope for E4 but to be honest it's looking less and less likely if The Outsider is cancelled.

Frontier have done nothing with Elite 4 other than to string people along saying that it is coming but with no timeline and nothing shown to the public. The cancellation of the Outsider basically shows that Frontier have no interest in games other than those such as Kineticmals and Lost Winds.

Elite is dead. It's as simple as that.

+1 its hell long time ago when i was hearing that new Elite is under development but its looks like that development was maybe only some pre-production design papers maybe some concepts but never seen anything from realgame.

another thing is such game could be very expensive and people dont play much such games.

People don't play expensive games? You seen the price of of Xbox and PS3 games? PC games have for years been cheaper than anything on console, i can cite you a very long list regarding that.

While i'd love E4 to go into production with the halting of the Outsider, after all these years i have to admit to being a bit glass half empty on this subject.

The fact that even if it wasn't what we expect due to years of ideas being thrown around, and the fact it would sell a lot of copies, which for a company is all important as it pays the wages, i tend to agree that E4 will never come out. That said, my candle is still burning on this subject although it's getting rather low.

Back to the Outsider, it is a shame if true, but a big project like that in development for so long, thinking from the company's point of view, cancel it now if completion isn't on the horizon, makes financial sense. Why flog a horse if it's not going anywhere? Maybe a little too ambitious from the creators.

I think back to Freelancer and the ideas originally for that before M$ stepped in and dumbed it down for 5yr olds, sad but happens.

I honestly believe Frontier could make stupid profits in record time from a slightly updated FE2 rehash. Licence the in-game billboard rights to someone like JCDecaux, opensource the rest, job done. Call it FE3 or E3.5 or something. Then you'd have all the resources you want to get all the juicy new stuff into E4...

You use the word "merely" very lightly.

It's already been six years mate, now "The priority has been reduced". You've more faith than I if you do not see this as a major setback (that's putting it mildly).

I feel for the people who have been made redundant, working on a project for so long only to be cut adrift must be a punch to the gut.

Must also be tough for DB right now, hope he can find the backing he needs to deliver games that match his vision.

You know I don't think that's an entirely silly idea - I'd pay for that. Whether the cost of resources would be outweighed by the returns and whether there are enough like-minded people out there is a hard one to gauge.

I personally would like to see the Outsider shelved and the technology/resources put toward getting Elite 4 under-way. From where I'm sitting the premise of The Outsider, whilst interesting from a novel thriller type direction, feels a little staid. Perhaps part of it's hard sell is that it doesn't stand out in a palpable way.

Dunno, it's both easy to speculate and hard to fathom where the direction of these games are going. If it's hard for a gamer to get excited about a game that has been 'in development' for so long then I'd imagine that it's equally, if not more, to get a publisher invested in it. Best of luck to David and Frontier on the Outsider, I do hope it picks up again, if only to get it out of the way so you can get on with the game we're hanging out for.

...in my opinion of course.

Well there is a burgeoning market with the XBOX Kinect - they would be mad to not tap into that as early as possible. There is little material out there for the device so anything they get out there is going to have something of an impulse buy to justify having been an early adopter with the Kinect.

BTw we know how the press acts.. they looks for sensational titles.
And Braben is not the kind of Guy that drop a job at the 70% of its stage, if you remember well he took 5 long years to complete Frontier... so how we could expect that he drops yet something in his life ?
