Why have the Black Hole effects been REMOVED? Stop trashing all the good work!

Oh man was so excited for finding and seeing the effects of my first BH... (Currently on my first Expedition with my brandnew Asp) :(

I'm sure it's all just a placeholder until the real content appears blah blah blah. This is very unfortunate, black holes were the one big highlight for explorers. At least I suppose we can be grateful that they did not add them as a filter to the galaxy map so you can just fly straight to them all without having to bother to, you know, spend time to do actual and meaningful exploration.

I think DB should leave the artist to build the visual effects as they see fit. I wouldnt mind some artist interpretation of Blackholes, Neutron Stars and so on. Currently they look kinda bad or they dont have a look at all because of all the ''science accuracy'' which makes the whole exp. boring.

I strongly disagree. They should be as realistic as possible, so when you're sitting there looking at it in game, you know that it's as close to being there IRL as possible.

i'm sorry for the OT, but in videos i see a good golden galaxy....why the hell in my PC looks like a muddy brown-redish thing? Do you know if it'ws a bug?

Try goiong up or down a few thousand light years - how high/low you are on the galactic plane makes a difference, as much of the light generated by the milky way can be blocked by dust when close to the level of it

So, you enjoy seeing nothing?

That's not true.... The BH seen in Interstellar is way more scientifically accurate than in ED, and it looks more complex and visually stunning.
Regarding the milky way skybox, i'd like to see a more subtle galaxy, as we should see it at naked eye from space and with a nice HDR near planets, not only near stars.

So yes, i would like a more realistic view, but it doesn't make the whole game less spectacular IMO.

I was talking about the neutron stars and BH more or less. Neutron stars look like dots if you're lucky. Black holes are more or less the same and the lensing effect looks totally wrong and too small if is there at all. This things should look impressive, not just one pixel black or white dot on the screen.
I'm also for less bright Milky Way, oh wait i've fix that from the graphics config file. :)

They still can be build in realistic maner but give the artist atleast some freedom like in Interstellar.

I dont get it, why do fdev keep changing things that have been key points of praise?

I remeber autocannons sounding good....

I think to start, if we could just get back to where we were on the black hole effects first... then go from there? :) - i'm on break ;) Shhhhh

Yeah that would be good, for starters. It's pretty obvious that they messed something up when gravitational lensing has been added to neutron stars and white dwarves.

Another stunning example comes from the Space Engine:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOraBP6TRVY

So, it can be done in real time on your average gaming rig. There's no need for hundreds of hours of rendering on supercomputers or whatever was used for Interstellar. If Cobra (FDEV's engine) is not capable for this, then them devs should better tell us so we can move along and forget about it. Fact that even in the old, better version lensing effect could not properly interact with stars, only with the gaseous nebulas in the background (instead, fake ring of random white dots used to be drawn around the BHs), doesn't look very encouraging to me.

Black holes should look more or less like neutron stars, and at most distances you'll see them in Elite Dangerous they should be barely resolvable. They'd only be resolvable by a human eyeball at a range of something like under 10Mm.

(Lack of accretion discs is more of an issue with them I think)

Again, i'm partially ok with you, but i was pointing that you don't need some unrealistic effect for spectacular views.
The point is that BH in ED are really far from spectacular, and i continue to say that if the artists uses a realistic approach the results would be better than make it all subtle as they did.

I continue to talk about Interstellar because you have a recent example that using real science and realistic stuff CAN make things spectacular... Gargantua went the iconographic image for the movie.

Regarding the Milky way, i was talking about the color gamma, not just the brightness...it looks like a reddish and blue dust all around, when we all know that our eye should see just a little subtle effects...just a bit more than what we can see in a clean dark night far from lights in our real life.

This was just an artistic decision and make just things looks worse than them would be IRL.

My 2 cents

I know NASA's pages used to describe the effect such that you should be able to see the back of your own head if you stood close in front of the event horizon...

If you stand close enough to the event horizon of a black hole then you would indeed be able to briefly see the back of your own head as you were compressed to the size of a single molecule.

I think they are still getting the hang of the graphics and are doing some background optimizing. If by the first major expansion all those graphics fixes aren't ironed ot then I'd be worried. I would at least give it a couple of major builds to start questiioning things like effects etc.

Well, I guess somebody thought that destroying the sounds was not enough, so they went after the black holes next.

Hopefully this bug will be fixed by the time I get out to Sag A*, I'm looking forward to seeing the supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy and would be disappointed if the lensing effect wasn't up to scratch...

Have Fun,
Jintosh

you can camp in the low orbit black hole...so in 15 mins will pass 25 years here on earth and FDevs will implement the bugfix in Oculus Rift V.12 :D

The Space Engine makes, once again, Elite look casual. BH are an explorer's dream, the ability to go as close as possible and witness the distortion it's as terrifying and wonderful as the essence of space is. Of course we need to be breathless by it and not just go meh like with the current effect. ED is far from being realistic so the purists have no argument here. For us, the virtual pilots, and especially the explorers, this is as close we will ever get to a black hole. We deserve to be blown away, even if that means that we venture to a theoretical interpretation of a BH visual.

It's not enough that exploration is basically meaningless with no real gameplay attached to it, now we lose some even on the visual area? Please fix this FD.
