Highlander (sorry, couldn't resist!)

Very impressive work. I've only just found this, so only up to page 5. In terms of gauging interest for your work I can say I would buy from you in a heartbeat if only I didn't live in a postage stamp in south London. Purely from the pictures I've seen so far I imagine you could make a good income from this, though if you did it could take the joy out of your hobby.

Keep up the good work - once you feel better of course! :)

Hmmm...should probably have not read it all through in one go. So much for a relatively early night!

TIOO - I can only say again that i really am impressed with your workmanship. Had I the space I would love to have a go at such a project (then fail, swear fluently and buy one from you!).

One note of caution about the Rift, I have read of many problems for Rift users as they cannot see other applications or controllers, so many rely on Voice Attack. I don't have a Rift myself, but using the iPad for controls would be nigh on impossible as you will have no tactile feedback of what you are pressing. If I am preaching to the choir here, my apologies!

In setting up my VA profile I have found myself running out of buttons, even with an X52 handling most flight controls. A workaround could be a gaming keyboard, then use VA to map the programmable keys to a spoken command.

Well my cough and cold is finally subsiding and about time too. The next couple of weekends look like they're going to be difficult to get moving on this but rest assured, I'll be back on it soon enough :) Looking forwards so some more significant progress on this myself as I've been getting withdrawal symptoms.

Now that is nothing short than spectacular.
Lacking any kind of DIY skills myself, I stand in awe before your work, ThereIsOnlyOne.

I didn't really say thank you to everyone for your kind words and encouragement so ... thanks :) Ordering some more bits and pieces at the moment. Will post more details once I start running with this again which should be Soon™.

Just to give an idea of using the mount with an iPad mini:

I've ordered some aluminium for use as a top plate for the mechanism.

Hello there Thereisonlyone,

First off let me just say WOW, awesome project so far.... One thing I would like I ask about is your center console setup, you mentioned an Ipad mini, I see you have a software interface set up touchpad linking to controls in the game. what software are you using and how does it interface with the game? I used to do flight simulator X and helped build cockpits for home use, but we never got off the ground with an interface such as yours. thanks and once again an amazing you've done here, im sure you have inspired many as you have me.

This is amazing! A lot of fun following through the process with you. I was inspired, and made a simple desk. Someday I hope to do something as ambitious. It could never look as good!

It's amazing - this thread apparently inspired a lot of other builds, and now this thread is (sadly) inactive, they all seem to have disappeared too! Come back TIOO! And bring the others with you! I miss watching what you creative people are building...

Hey, thanks for the feedback everyone :) I was due to start again last weekend but it's simply been too cold to get going unfortunately. This will get moving as soon as things warm up even a little!

Just, wow. First time spotting this thread. This is an amazing piece of work TIOO. This is now a must-check thread for me (which is something I never do).

I've been very interested in building my own chair for awhile now and so far this is the closest thing I've seen to what I would want in a chair. I really hope that you have some good solid blueprints/build instructions after the fact. What I'd be more interested in though is a complete list of a all the tools you have to build this. Buying the components necessary to build something like this is something I could easily do over the course of a few months in incremental purchases but I'd be pretty worried about the cost of all the tools which is my bar to entry into this type of project as I have an embarrassingly small selection of less than the average amount of household tools. lol.

Thanks Aidan. No blueprints at the moment but I will try and make the time to put them together. The tool set for this is pretty limited to be honest. This is what I have:

Circular saw used very occasionally (not used for this build that I can remember):

Old Black and Decker drill - does the job:

Small workbench:

A couple of G-Clamps (yes, only two!):

That's it really.

Hi TIOO,

Just wondered if you've had a chance to do anymore work on this great creation?

Regards

I will be starting again soon! Just designing the headrest at the moment - I need to figure out an elegant way of allowing it to move forwards and backwards easily. It's been really difficult to motivate myself with the cold weather ...
