Community Event / Creation The C-Pod: A DIY Command seat (build log)

I will be starting again soon! Just designing the headrest at the moment - I need to figure out an elegant way of allowing it to move forwards and backwards easily. It's been really difficult to motivate myself with the cold weather ...

Don't blame you TIOO! I feel spring in the air now so hopefully we'll have some warmer weather for you!

I was searching for this thread just a couple days ago to see if there were any updates. Looking forward to progress when you get the energy and mood back! :D

Thanks for the reply.

Looking forward to the continuation of the build, obviously once it's a tad warmer ;)

Yes CMDR, I do. What would you like to know? As a fellow builder and IT professional I am EXTREMELY interested in what you have done here... will be following (and possibly replicating) your build in it's ENTIRETY.

Thanks for that demonmaker, it definitely does look like an interesting option. I'll go the standard route first but if that doesn't work out, this is certainly something to try. Cheers!

Just looking around a hand controlled mouse options for navigating the menus. This looks interesting:

Does anyone have any experience with it?

I love your work! Have you tried Elite with DK2 yet? I will say as a Rift user and fellow IT guy/cockpit builder (youtube ITin513) I began searching the E : D forums to find exactly what you have set out to build. I am adding my two cents here as you can see my head movements with use of the Rift on my Twitch Channel http://twitch.tv/captainoculus so do please consider the headrest "situation" prior to attaching.

In regards to your possible blue prints: TAKE ALL MY MONEY! In all honesty, just the basic measurements would probably be enough for anyone with modest handywork skills. The upholstery portion will likely be my downfall; but I own the tools, am confident in my skills, and will be bringing your build state-side this spring! WOOT!

Something small to bear in mind. I made some small platforms either side of my desk for my x52 pro to attach to. I thought if I put them a bit wider than I would normally I could leave them in place and still access my desk as normal.

This worked out fine until I got my oculus rift recently.

Now when I look down at my hands in the game they are actually not where they should be in the game. It doesn't sound like much but it's surprising how much this irritates!

If you like I could estimate the distance between the two in the Rift. Should be able to make a rough guess by moving them closer and checking in the Rift.

Totally agree here. Nailing the position of my rudder pedals and HOTAS is 100% clutch. I can "peak" thru the nose cutout of the Rift and see my arm fade into my virtual one.... for those wondering about immersion... it's there man... it's there.

AWESOME!

This thing looks like it will be 12 shades of AWESOME. Can't wait for the final reveal, I'm reading the entire thread now. I wish I had the room to do something like this. Best I can do is bolt my x52 Pro to my desk :D. Keep up the good work!!

Anything I can help with? maybe throw a few ideas your way if you can give me an outline of what you are trying to accomplish?

Wonderful to hear you are on the way back to building! Ive been waiting to see more from you but I understand your dilemma, the cold darkness that takes over my home half of the year puts me off enormously.
But soon enough, now its getting warmer and daylight stays longer and I can almost start to count down to when its time to go get the bike again!

Take your time mate, were all excited to see your build though ;)

This is a very thorough build. I would suggest that this sort of level of detail is worthy of collating into a buyable pdf document at the very least. The finishing tips alone are priceless. Honestly combined with a section on demistifying the electroncs side of this could provide a manual publication worthy of sitting on any good makers bookshelf.

Why make money selling these things when you could write a book and sell it lots of times? Educational documentation sir, a revenue stream that you are MORE than qualified to take advantage of. I look forward to your future posts with interest.

I can build a custom shed and landscape a garden and weave a bit of chainmaille sir but your head and shoulders above me. That chair is a thing of beauty.

Thinking of booking a flight to Europe and motivating the OP, I'll sing and dance until he restarts the project. That would make a horse drink, trust me ;)

Well, you're going to shame me into action if nothing else! Lots of posts and interest and, to be honest, I'm a little frustrated with my lapse in progress. This will get started again soon - a small matter of a 20th wedding anniversary and some weekend working to tie up first. Plus, my wife wants this complete so I can free up some space in the hall where this is currently sitting.

I did pick up some work on some bits I needed to add to my racing pod so the desire to build seems to be gathering some momentum :)

Comments, feedback and general interest is very much appreciated!

Its a bloody good sized project for a man with 3 power tools and a folding workbench :) You may be struggling a wee bit for the motivation and energy to complete the build, but, its not too terrible a thing to have taken a wee step back from it, when you could have easily just stepped away. I'm really looking forward to seeing the end result, whenever that may be. Some things you just can't rush.. well, unless the better half gives you 'that' look and tells you too!

Best regards, and a happy 20th Aniversary
