ED to get Deathmatch modes for PvP ??

I don't think Frontier know what they're taking on releasing a console version so soon. The lack of real meat and meaningful mission structure is going to hurt the console launch. Have you seen the official trailer at GDC ? It's another great piece of marketing spin showing massive space battles. Console gamers are a completely different beast when wronged...

I've had some good warzone battles to be fair, but it's a very long way from being a sturdy console release, hells even a decent PC title.

I have hope that 1.3 (and hopefully 1.4 and others) that we will get before Xbox One version will give it enough meat. Fingers crossed (very happy with both 1.1 and 1.2).

can anyone explain to me why there can't be open-world pvp AND an arena?

Maybe Gladiator should be a profession, like trading and smuggling.

As long as these zones are an addition to the game Im not against them, but if they are used to water down pvp in the game as a whole I think it would probably kill the game for me. In order of what I do most:

1. Bounty Hunting - Its great when I come across a wanted pirate.
2. Trading - I like the risk of Player interdiction.
3. Exploring - When fitted for exploration its exciting dodging players until you get safely away from the core systems and brings some trepidation if you run into another explorer when on a long trip.

So if the aim is to force the dilution (by whatever means) of pvp outside these intended zones I think this will negatively alter the game and bring into question the whole design philosophy of putting in any sort of multiplayer in the main game and the associated compromises that had to be made.

Yes. I didn't notice a release date. I'm sure they will want to get a couple more point updates in first.

Frontier have sold many Xbox titles. They have like 10 million XBox customers already for other games like Zoo Tycoon. Everyone is armchair guessing FD but to me this is all good news.

Arena mode will make it easier to congregate players that want PvP and hopefully means a mode we can play without risking 40+ hours of earnings on a new ship. This was a popular thing at each wipe in Beta where players would gather and just go crazy because all the credits were going anyway. And Arena in Elite could mean anything from an entire solar system to a confined space in the rings of a gas giant.

FS don't have $80 million to develop the game out the way we all want it. WoW had almost $60 million in 2000 dollars for its development of v1.0. FD needed to release the game to realize revenue and they need to continue to drive sales to take it where we all want it to be. That's just the facts. They have expansion pass revenue on hold until the first paid expansion comes along as well. Full implementation of the DDF on a $2 mil Kickstart is just delusional. And who knows, everyone likes to complain, but some of the nay-sayers may find they like the arena implementation after it comes out.

In any event, it is impossible to satisfy everyone. Period.</ramble>

There could be. Maybe what FD are aiming for. Probably more info after Wings release next week or when Michael makes the first 1.3 dev update.

I am not a big fan of PvP these days but have no objection to arena style events I think they actually fit in to the ED verse quite well.

All of the great civilisations have had sports, gladiatorial games and races so it only seems natural that the 34c would have them too. The events could allow for spectators and maybe illegal gambling and prize purses for winners.

Anything that potentially adds to the EDverse without stepping on the core idea of one man one ship is good for the game and therefore good for all in my opinion.

With the Xbox One announcement just having been made this now makes a lot of sense for the console generation...

Oi! PC gamers like to have fun too! I honestly fail to understand how anyone could find this a bad idea. It's THRILLING my brain in such a wonderful way. Speedball 2 in spaceships! "Ice-cream! Ice-cream!" This is exactly the kind of entertainment I'd imagine in the future where they have a perfect system for safely ejecting from an exploding ship.

I saw someone mention league tables too. Oh ma goad. My wee tail is wagging like crazy here. I know it's not going to happen but, as I said... I'm a dreamer...

edit: Amen Kramster! Exactly. For me this would be part of building a universe which is actually more believable. More interesting. More fun. More "character". At the moment it all seems a bit stale and lifeless to me (still very beautiful though).

Yeah, they're not calm and peaceful like... no, wait..

Could the deathmatch modes be set in the systems that are in conflict. this would make more lore sense as you could be the pilot of a fed/imp fighter launched from a capital ship. When you die you respawn at the launch tube to continue.
:
Essentially the player would be a grunt in the armed forces, simply going where he was told to and shooting stuff, pretty much like sny other grunt in CoD, BF, Halo etc.
:
The setting for the pvp would be determined by the background sim i.e a clash between Imperial and Alliance forces in the Furbaide system. The results from the 'arena' matches would be aggregated with the results from conflict zones in the current play modes to feed back into the background sim to determine the winning faction.
:
This could be a win/win situation. Players with a pvp hankering get to scratch that itch in an appropriate environment, whilst still participating in the background sim. Other players can play in open untroubled by extreme pvp players.

If "arena pvp" is done well and doesn't leave resources for the main problems of the game (missions overhaul for example) I agree with that.
I mean ... intergalactic tournaments sounds goods to me. Even in ddf people were asking for racing mode..

But I repeat: only if done well.

If it's integrated into conflict zones and actually gives them a purpose, it could be good. Light knows conflict zones need some structure.

If it's just an arena style affair, with queues and leaderboards, I can imagine it'll be met with abject hatred.

What kinds of entertainment/sports do you imagine 1000 years from now, Ydiss? Why can't there be just... contests between pilots for fun and glory and entertainment? It's far weirder to me that these things AREN'T part of the game already. The people of the future SUCK. Boring, grey, morose, back and forth... why did God make the universe so dull... so we could more easily make credits.... Bah! Let's switch to channel 4million. It's Isinona vs Jingles to the almost death!

edit: I mean... you can choose to fight for a cause (yes, they still need to work on making us actually care about such things) or perhaps you've been a bounty hunter for 20 years and are tired of being looked down on and fancy a wee chance at the Arena... all the skills you've learned.. for a shot at instant glory and fame and CASH. You can be a David Beckham or a Spartacus. OR BOTH.

My problem is: I enjoy fun too much. I'm sorry for being so enthusiastic. :( I'll go try some of that rare trading people talk about and never post again. :(

So they added wings to give us some coop.

Now they'll add some PvP modes as a bonus.

You all can still do Open PvP just fine BUT if you want to face another wing in a deathmatch game you can do that too.

Why are you guys complaining?

Yes. Why would anyone complain about more content, more choice, more fun? Stuff to actually show off Frontier's (imo) brilliant flight model and combat. Apparently in the future no one enjoys the things we've enjoyed for thousands of years. Entertainment doesn't exist in the future.

"Where are you off to dear husband? You better not be going to the pub to watch that Sidie vs Sidie X-Factor thingy!"
"Don't be ridiculous, love. Our universe doesn't have such potentially wonderful entertainment. You must have dreamed it. I'm just popping out for some synthetic animal meat. I may be some time...."
"Ok, dear. Um... what's that in your hand?"
"OH! NOTHING. NO NO."
"Show me?"
"I can't. Ehhm... my hands are... fell off..." *shoves them in his pockets*
"I saw that! It was a ticket for Sidie vs Sidie! OMFG!"
"Nooooo.... there is no such th...." *runs away*

It's a really good idea for so many reasons.

1) At the moment the area where the game really shines is with the combat/flight model. It makes sense to harness that strength.
2) It will open the game up to a whole new group of players who aren't interested in the current 'big galaxy' game but are interested in PvP combat. That means more money coming into Frontier and the game continuing to be supported and improved.
3) It will improve things for the more PvE players in open. It won't get rid of the hardcore griefers and it won't stop RPing pirates (which we don't want to stop anyway) but it will give an outlet to the players who at the moment have no outlet for their aggressive 'urges' and who are becoming frustrated by the lack of PvE content.

There are two important caveats though:

First is that that it remains self contained. That means self contained leagues/ranking points but no ability to win credits to take outside of that self contained game mode.

Second that Frontier either make clear from the beginning that the provision of combat arenas is a privilege that can be removed if people consistently use hacks/exploits; or delegate management of the arenas to a third party (with a kind of group mechanism that allows the 'kicking' of hackers/exploiters). From a layman's point of view creating the arenas requires very little fresh development and can use the existing engine/code with a little bit of work creating the leagues/rankings. However I would be very worried if Frontier take up the task of policing the arenas as that is going to be a big job that could potentially divert hours from the development of the rest of the game.

If those two caveats are met I cannot see how anybody could object to the introduction of this.

Just to give some context - unless Frontier really hit the jackpot and are able to introduce some kind of rating system and parallel matching mechanism I doubt I will be using the arenas. I don't have the time in my life (or even the inclination to be honest) to put in the hours of practice that are required to be able to compete against hardened PvP players.

I was getting a little bit worried about the game recently but I think it has been an incredibly strong few days from the developers. By all reports 1.2 is a massive step forward, expanding the game to the Xbox will bring more money in to develop the game and the combat arenas (assuming that the conclusions from the data mining is correct) is a great idea. I'm now really excited about the future of this game.

Xbone release and rumours of Arena pvp. Im thinking the Arena pvp will be assigned wholly to the Xbone as I dont believe it will be able to handle one star system let alone 400 billion star systems.

It'll run fine on Xbox. The 400 billion star systems are handled server-side. I'm running the game on a 2 year old laptop with the graphics card disabled (due to the AMD 'blind spot' glitch which I hope gets fixed at some point) and the game runs fine.
