How many of you don't play anymore?

Set your own goals. It's a cliché, and people are fed up with the cliché, but its the journey not the destination. Yes the game could provide better short/medium-term goals, but in the end, what meaningful goal in the long-term can there be in an open-ended simulation, other than those you set yourself?
.
Why did I stop playing earlier Elites? Well the first I stopped because I became Elite, but the second and third I just drifted away from after making milllions of credits, and getting/flying the ships I wanted. Did I 'grind' to get those ships? Nope. I suspect I'll do the same in this one - but it will still be a few hundred hours away - still trading to the Asp in a Cobra at present. I'll have got my money's worth ,and I won't think the game was terrible given the content I've seen. Heck, I'll take 10 Elites (or S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s with freeplay modes) over most recent releases. :)

Now look up synonyms for 'subjective' and see where you can go from there. ;)

Sorry I was just clarifying "meaningful" no mention of "subjective" in your post ;););)

The game has failed. In the press, in general opinion, and will never recover.

It's a game that needs years of development, but is already an old game from last year.

Turn out the lights, and remember this next time some cult-status "game genius" claims to be making the next big thing. This game is simply terrible and unrecoverable, as is commonly known outside the ultra-fans echo chamber.

I wish I could argue this effectively!

Because they want to keep their dedicated playerbase well informed and happy? After all, they don't have to promise anything, only saying something like "we'd like to add this and that, which should work like this

Would be nice more threads like the "overcharged weapons" one (don't remember exact name) where a Dev wrote like 10 posts explaining the variety of guns and modules they were thinking of introducing at some point (being clear enough that it wasn't decided yet). Or the other Dev that programs the AI that jumps in every chance she gets and claryfies AI behaviour stuff and talks about her progress with known issues...

I see they can't go writing all the time, especially when they themselves don't decide on their own which features go in and which don't, and especially when there's so much negativity due to the rushed release (or whatever) which is not their fault either.

But some people responsible for the decisions should get someone (if he doesn't have the time of course) to explain solutions or plans to resolve the main reasons that people list that make them upset, at least, since would be bad if we wanted to force all devs to act like the ones in the example two paragraphs earlier.

Look, since the main reason of the thread is starting to be secondary, I'd like to suggest (I want to emphasize "suggest", so do what you want, of course) to try to name one thing you like about the game or one example of a solution the devs have come up that you liked regarding a past game issue every time you decide to list something you don't like about the game right now. Because they are not gonna check threads where there's only listed their mistakes or stuff the devs have no control over and we will not solve anything.
What do you think?

Well first off, all characters wouldn't be completely unique. They would have common traits with others across the galaxy. The procedural generation thing, doesn't just work with planets. That doesn't matter too much, because players wouldn't be working with all characters everywhere. Probably just a handful in a few systems. But they would still be the characters that that particular player is dealing with which I think is the important part.

As for for instancing and persistancy, all I can say is this:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7494

Oh, I'm aware of the DDA on NPC tiers. However, I suspect that a lot of that was written before the true realities of the multiplayer system, as it is now, were known. An update as to whether that is all still on the cards would be greatly appreciated by many I feel (even though it doesn't have the same 'sexy' impact as planetary landings or explorable ships for instance).
.
I'd imagine in terms of complexity and storage, tracking tier II and I characters would be a comparable, but greater challenge to the tracking of exploration data - and that has taken a good few months to sort out. Also, see my earlier example regarding instancing, if high tier characters can be killed by a player, and they exist for many players - in who's instance do they exist? Trade data you can aggregate and 'fudge' to get the update for the day, bit more difficult to do that for NPCs. And that's before you'd consider how the solo-online guys would feel (say you lose a valuable NPC trade partner because someone killed them in open?)
.
Finally, I'm aware proc. gen. can be used for more than planets. I get to have fun with it on a daily basis at work too. :D

I wish I could argue this effectively!

That wasn't an effective argument, it was a bluntly stated subjective, sound-bite. One, I partly agree with, (the game would fail if it was remaining static) but one would prefer not to subscribe wholeheartedly to. :)

Yes but you are still talking about Grinding.

OK. You call it 'grinding', I see the same gameplay as the previous Elites. I'm not bothered about making credits quickly, I like messing around in super-cruise, and, given chance, things are probably going to get better from hereon in. [NB: All subjective again :) ] I see a game that I'm not 'pressured' to 'complete', where the storyline is my own, and I can dip into it for a couple of hours, fly a spaceship and see the sights. Now whether Elite holds up against No Mans Sky, Limit Theory or Star Citizen, remains to be seen.

You know the term "confirmation bias"? You should, because apparently you are suffering from it. How has it failed in the press? Reviews are all in the range of 90 to 70 out of 100 and even the "worst" reviews offer a lot of praise:

There’s a great deal to enjoy about Elite: Dangerous, from the tone-perfect space immersion and sense of sheer scale, to ship handling and the relative freedom of choice in player activities. … As things stand, it’s (servers-permitting) a pretty damn good [title] with a whole lot of potential.

Not to mention that is has been runner up on more than one "Game of Year" list.

And how has it failed in general opinion? Just a reminder in case you missed it: just two days ago, ED won the GDC 2015 Audience award.

Meaningful goal?
Something I feel worthy to play for.
I played years and years of Lineage 2. There were always so many contents and so many alternatives to play with - and at the end there was always a reward I was proud to get. I needed to grind as well but that let me participate in different, SCALED events upwards (castle siege, raid boss, specific dungeons, etc.).
It was a true multiplayer experience even if I was only a "single little character" with no influence to the world. Teaming up gave the chance to set up many goals and all needed a good load of time and a good sense of cooperation to achieve.
We had territory if we fought for it and won. Impossible to do that alone but that's a meaningful goal and a good reason to cooperate. We had plenty of tiny social options to create big and spectacular events and scenes in the central square of the town. It was worthy to do and it was worthy to watch when other came up with theirs. What we do had an effect on others and what they've done had an effect on us. We had several ways to act and counteract in order to build a balance and to destroy it.
Even with a new pet to walk along and greet other players was fun.

So I guess most of us who are slightly or more disappointed here are really dedicated if there's a good soil to step on.
ED's defensive misconception is the "you are a nobody in a vast universe so you'll never have any influence on anything". Ok, fair enough - that's a good plot for some art or a movie but not for a game. A game is full of activity and to do that the players need motivation. An outcome they can enjoy, share or compete. And what they can develop further from there in many directions.

We have ranks in ED - they mean nothing. There's no different quality attached to it, there's no different content sprouting from a certain level. So it means nothing. It could be MEANINGFUL though.
We have ships. We can do the same things in them, only some invisible numbers are changing in the background. We can do everything ED offers in any of them. And we don't know why we should choose one over the other as the outcome is only MONEY. And what can we use the money for? Buying ships. The circle is complete but it's not even a circle but a straight line. Does that matter if I trade, mine or fight? From the perspective of goals: not at all.

So when anyone asks for a meaningful content, they probably think about something like the above.
And maybe to decide first whether ED is a solo or multiplayer game. Make that decision and develop coherently. The two will not work together well the way it is now.

I played ED for a good 2 months. A big part of it was my '84-er soul - without that I wouldn't even last longer than possibly a week or so.

Not played elite yet due to my old machine. The game is sitting in the FD store after backing the game on KS. My take is this is just the beginning of the Elite journey and being an original player on the BBC that relied on your imagination to fill in the blanks and make it more exciting than blowing up 3D line ships in the 80’s. This will be a whole new experience playing against real players and trying out other ships. I hope this is even better by the time I buy a new rig later at the end of the year. David rightly just won another award for bringing the original space sim back to life. It looks fantastic and I know personally I’ll take my time and savour the game when I do load it up. Elite sits well doing what it set out to do and bring Elite up to date. I’ve not followed that other space game Star citizen that seems to be aiming to high and paying the price by failing to achieve and abandon things. Elite being the original, the genesis of this genre always had a lot to prove and it is developing at a good pace. Console and Mac users will only add more funding to keep developing and supporting the game and at least for some we thankfully have one space sim introducing a new generation to this genre. Hopefully SC will also bring something to the table.

As I said... I am not playing now for a while and I am waiting for the next things without very much hope for a nice surprise.
And: In the last days I "flew around" in SPACE ENGINE more and more.
There, you feel like an explorer of the stars ! :)
Amazing software, written by one (!) guy.

Stopped for a little to play some other games, started again playing the Wings beta, and I have to admit, I'm back into the game again. Really good content, E:D is starting to become what I actually envisioned, not that it wasn't fun before.

Same here. But I have a disabled person to take care of, so my game play time is not what it used to be.

ED and SC are very much two different games, with Elite locked into 1984 immersion which will not change. With Elite locked, I think folks will tire after doing the grind for a year or so, then SC will appear on the scene and offer viewing diversity not found elsewhere. I predict many will leave Elite for SC over the external view issue, when SC offers views from every angle.

With views like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=o-xvCg8CI9U

This is what Elite lacks and will never have, due to the lock on immersion. Maybe when we get to "Elite Cosmos" and "Elite Trader", but not in Elite Dangerous.

For now, ED is on the table and what we have. SC will be the dream come true.

Holy mother. I generally don't follow games just because I over hype myself and then cannot get away from it..so I haven't seen anything from SC in quite some time..this just blew my mind.

In the country where I live, the same person typically wins all pools for best sports commentator and worst sports commentator. Some things are divisive like that, and I suspect ED is one such thing.

Look at the game's userscore at Metacritic, for example. 6.7 score, based on 1177 ratings right now, of which 767 are positive, 344 are negative, and just 66 are neutral. People either love or hate this game, and while it seems to have more people that love than hate it, given the fact that haters tend to spread their message far wider, the current balance doesn't bode well to the game's image or longevity.

And here is another crux of the matter. 'Raid bosses'? 'Upward scaled events'? To me these have no place in the simulation. Events and difficulty (or should) just be governed by circumstance of the simulation - i.e. I'd expect the space around Earth to be safe, but if I wanted to take down that mob boss in a dangerous anarchy, or topple a government in that feudal system, I should bring more than a Sidewinder, and preferably bring friends.

ED's defensive misconception is the "you are a nobody in a vast universe so you'll never have any influence on anything".

It's also a unique selling point - you. your ship. alone. against the void. I agree that it would be nice if there were more tangible rewards for helping factions, and that reputation with factions or rise in rank should visibly give access to more choice missions. As long as it's more 'organic' in feel than: "CONGRATULATIONS! You have reached level 15! Unlock = Asp" <shudder!>

Hate Metacritic. Someone gives something '0', so someone else has to give a '10' to cancel that out, so someone else... Prime example of one of our greatest failings as a species. :D [If you're wondering, which you weren't, but, I'd give the game a 7 in its current state, and an 8 with 'wings' in place].

I want to be able to play with my friends, like we could back in Alpha, P.Beta, and (some of) Beta days.

And last night while I was testing the new Wings update, I was able to.

#EliteDangerous cracks me up! Anaconda almost did me in. Left my Wing mates to handle him and limped to safety.

I haven't been able to play lately due to lots and lots of work. Maybe the break was good timing as well, because when I get back in I'll be able to enjoy what I want to do...play with my buddies.

If you are a long range explorer, your behind is glued to the chair. A lot more things to do than just trading or completing missions. Dammit, space... Why you have to be so big. lol

Is the trading still borked? I've not played for a few months :/ and I'm not sure I like the sound of all the nerfs that we've had either..

I'm waiting for FD to catch up with EVE and now Blizzard .. once I can drop $100 and get all the creds I desire I'll play again :)

my $0.02.

Still play on occasions also still muck around in Elite Multiplayer with me brothers, would release it when complete but its under a 'cease and desist order' which I'm clarifying with David Braben atm.
