The X-Rebirth Thread

It looks like after 7 years of development hell, the devs saw Elite and Star Citizen coming over the hill and realised their best hope was to cobble the pieces together and shove it out the door. It's a bit cynical to release the game on pre-order, and not let reviewers or gamers anywhere near the product prior to release.

Yup to both. They will only get to do that once, so I hope they made enough in pre-orders to allow the studio to continue & fix the game (if it is fixable). No way will people be pre-ordering in numbers from Egosoft again.

So much whining, so little point. It will get fixed, it always does ... and ... plenty of people "will" have fun with the depth of the game. Recover and get over it people. :)

Not sure about that. Looks like trading, the core piece of X, got severely destroyed:

>I must be missing something I'm not expected to literally babysit every little trade am I?

That's exactly what you are expected to do. You must personally fly to every single station you want to trade with and then you can send your trader to buy stuff. Then you have to fly to the station you want to sell to and then call your freighter again and tell it to sell stuff there. There is no remote control whatsoever.

Trading and empire building was THE main feature of the series, and they hobbled it! Killing trade in a X game is like removing the guns in a first person shooter.

Looks to me like they wanted to appease the "casuals" first and foremost, and it's not an issue of development hell as such (surely in 7 years they could have made a better trading system, they have the experience). The apparent abundance of mini-games hints at that direction as well.

Too bad the casuals don't seem to like it much either.

Definitely a lesson in not trying to please an imaginary demographic, I'm rather glad I hesitated to pull the trigger on buying this one.

Give it 6 months and a swathe of patches and it'll be...what am I saying? ED will be out by then and my life in other games will be over :D

Such a shame to see a great game ruined :(

I would have bought XR if ED had missed the KS target back in Jan.

I spent hundreds of hours in each X3 and every time I ended up making complexes and having fleets of ships at my beck and call. Enjoyed every moment of it too.

To take just that set of features away is like ripping one of my legs off and smacking me round the face with it.

Then to make it a console port (apologies if it isn't, but from what I've seen, the textures look hideously low res), well that's kicking my remaining leg from under me!

Wow, even the most basic ship commands are gone.

http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=348271

I went back and checked again. I'll be damned, there are really no commands to control your other ships! WHAT THE HELL?! The "Take me to..." command only plots a course for the Skank, my trader refuses to move an inch. Aaaand there is no other command whatsoever.

Question: how do I suppose to repair them or upgrade them when I can't send them dock? How do I suppose to make them escape enemy fire? How do I suppose to send them to meet another ship or exchange freight? How do I make it do ANYTHING ELSE THAN FLOAT IN SPACE?!

This game a f#&đing disgrace not only to the X series, but all space sims.

Incredible!

We're also seeing a difference, or will be seeing a difference from the older more traditional development and release model which Rebirth followed and those of ED/SC where backers and early adopters not only offer feedback via the forums, but will have access to early builds to try to a wider than normal circle of users.

Even if something horrible is implemented early in the process it can be corrected before release, one example undergoing this process is Godus.

I TRIED VERY HARD to play for 2-3 hours. I have no desire to start game again.
One of the biggest disappointments in last 3-4 years.
I want my money back.... E&D and SC should have it.

Hard to tell whether Godus will be corrected enough though. It's got a long way to go, and at some point the income will fail them. That's one of the good things about Frontier... They've hopefully got fresh income coming in with the release of Zoo Tycoon (along with whatever other projects they're involved with that are still under NDA) to actually afford to keep Elite running in gamma until it's right. Some of these projects are living on borrowed time.

So, you lot going to be like this if ED doesn't fulfill your every, whim, beck and call? Might I remind you lot, EVE (for all it's haters) started out rough back in the the early days yet has made a killing money wise. Yes, even "with" an alpha and beta test done by hundreds at the time. Like all complex games there were still problems with it when it went full release. And yes, "shock horror!" it needed constant patching. I think some of you lot here are being a tad bit unrealistic with your expectations.

I have to say that the "highway system" is the dumbest thing ever - i have been spending 1½hour trying to get my freighter unstuck from a traffic jam in the highway system and now i give up.

That system is just a ticking gamebraking bug!

Could't they just have used some good old superspeed stuff instead of making actual lanes that your ai ships find hard to navigate.

Yep, that highway system is too freelancery...and making even a mini game of that?!? Huge MEH.

@PacalB, as long as ED delivers on the core of the promise: solid space exploration and trading, intra system flight and believable AI, I don't see reason to criticize FD from the get go.

I think the vehemence here derives from how far from any previous X project X:R has deviated. Added to which all the preview footage/information neatly sidestepped the issues that have been painfully apparent in the finished article. It's not just a small and vocal section of the gaming community that are slating this title - almost no one (who has expressed an opinion) likes it, not the hardcore X faithful, nor the more casual gamers that the game was supposedly catered to attract.

As a long term Egosoft supporter, who has learnt to accept that their X games are generally facing at least a few post release patches before reaching their potential, this still looks to me to be an ill considered venture, released in an unfinished state and one that has deliberately misled it's customers. If ED was launched in a similar manner (which I'm convinced it wont be), a similar level of criticism would be as justified.

So, you lot going to be like this if ED doesn't fulfill your every, whim, beck and call?

All depends if there's a good game in there waiting to come out. If it's broken from day one, I'll slowly walk away from the game with my head bowed and the corner of my eye moistened by a tear. Feel free to play the violin.

If it shows promise, I'll forgive all manner of rough edges, niggles, and even a few big problems. Godus is a game where they've got a good enough engine, but the actual gameplay is woefully lacking, with very little to do and seemingly based around an uninspiring multiplayer experience. It's hard to see how they'll correct it without spending more development time than they've got cash to pay for (not that I've seen their accounts). I've not played X: Rebirth, so can't comment on that.

If they released it retail, in an unfinished, unstable & unplayable state - then yes. It's something that worried me greatly when FD were being held to the March 2014 deadline, and continuing to be certain that they'd make it.

But it's clear that this scenario isn't going to happen here. The gamma phase will put paid to that. And there will be a beta phase too, where a sizeable number of backers will get the chance to play the entire game for a while & offer feedback. And trust me, if something really sucks, FD will hear about it. :) And they should welcome that.

This is completely different to what Egosoft have done with XR. They have always had a very loyal following - it staggers me that they didn't do what FD have done with theirs; utilise them, let them play the game for a decent length of time before release, and give opinions. Instead, it's been clouded in secrecy. What few things leaked out about it prior to release have raised eyebrows, but not much else, because nobody had seen how it all was supposed to fit together in this "new" game.

"We must trust the developers - after all, they have made a game we love before now!"

It's obvious now why that was. And it's a shame really, because 'X' was (is) a good game.

I've played X series since day one. Loved em. Yeah they had bugs but they got worked out. From everything I've read prior to the game and everything I've read, talked about, etc since the games release. It seems like a bad movie. They put out a movie promo that uses cuts from the movie and stuff that is not even in the movie (yes Hollywood has actually done that multiple times) put it out as fact. Then when you go to see the movie, it sucks canal water. The movie is nothing like the previews and the cut scenes are entirely out of context. I am so sad at this. I wanted to like this so much. What a letdown. I don't even know what they could do at this point to save face. For me it actually is a sad day in gaming. Especially a sad day for the X series.

Hamerstein, Juniper ...

are we playing the same game? Or are you just allowing yourselves to get caught up in the hyperbole raving going on in the egosoft threads currently? I've just plonked 13 hours into the game to see all these so called terrible terrible things I keep hearing about, guess what? I don't see it, it may not be X:TC but I'm still having fun with the thing, hence being able to plonk 13 hours into it.

I just saw a thread on google supposedly "Egosoft apologise for the state of X Rebirth – Bugs being investigated" I mean like wft?

###### Bugs we are investigating ######

- Broken or missing voice recordings in language other than english
Listening to the English version and in 13 hours not heard a problem in voice recordings, what gives?

There is an update for german voices today (nov 15th) and another update end of next week. We apologize for these problems. French voices are expected to be added in mid december, russian voices should also follow in december.
So, it's a German thing?

- Performance problems on very high end PCs

I have a very high end pc, self built ... nope, no performance problems here with everything set to max settings. What gives?

It seems that some of you experience an unsatisfying framerate even though you have really high end machines. We want to know which systems are affected by this and need to reproduce these problems here. To do this it would help us immensely if you could send your DXDIAG reports and describe the framerates you measure (e.g with the FRAPS tool) in certain situations. Please describe the situation and give different examples (e.g landed on a station, in an empty zone, close to a station, in a highway etc.). Please send your information to info@egosoft.com with subject #PERFORMANCE INFO#

Errr? when? Seems I'm not some of them.

- Stuck object on platform: We are sorry that this still happens sometimes and will fix it ASAP, but you should however always be able to simply use ENTER – 5 to get back.

Had this happen once on the entrance to the vent, didn't know how to deal with it so I reloaded the game. Have a sort of problem happen the same way on a station when I opened to many locker door in a narrow space and got stuck. Though I quickly figured out I don't have to reload a saved game, just hit return, select the crew option, then exit from platform to re-enter the ship ... very easy work around that two to three brain cells could work out.

- We read reports of people who can not save: Please check if the harddrive that you are saving to has space left and the right are set correctly for the savegame folder. If you think this is all correct, please send us a DXDiag file to info@egosoft.com with subject #SAVING BUG#

Never had or seen this problem here in 13 hours, plenty of free drives and its loaded a SSD.

- Crash right at gamestart (but not in or before start menu):

Never happened.

This is very likely memory related. Do not try running the game in 32 bit Windows (this is not officially supported). If you still want to experiment with 32 bit Windows, be aware that it may crash. More importantly it will definitely crash if you do not set your machine to allow more than 2GB of physical memory. There are tricks to achieve this but in general the rule is: Use a 64bit Windows! UPDATE: Patch 1.12 will give you a message at the start if the game has zero chance of running because of “out of memory” and not even start!

Running 64 bit Windows 7 here with (4 x 8GB) mushkin blackline's for 32GB, memory overkill basically.

- Exiting the super highway (blue) millions of km away from anything
Never had this happen.

This seems to be a bug several people report. We are trying to reproduce this but it is not easy. If you have information on how to reproduce, please email info@egosoft.com
Please let us know if you had this problem with 1.12 or above, as we hope it was already fixed.

Seems I've only ever played on the 1.12 patch version, steam sorted that, so nothing to add.

- After loading cursor vanishes
While running around on platforms the mouse cursor is supposed to disappear. If it happens in normal flight, please check if you have more than one physical monitor and the cursor may just moved off the screen?

Again, 13 hours of play, never had this happen. Pre-patch problems maybe?

- Ship flying through station:

Errr? Nope, never ... she bounces and take a bit of shield damage.

We apologize for this happening. We hoped to have reduced the chance of this happening significantly, but are investigating this.

###### Tricks & Tips ######

- Dont run game in 32bit Windows and make sure you have enough memory free

Yes and yes.

- Make sure you have latest drivers installed.

Always.

- If you have problems with the game, reset all settings in the driver to default

Not needed.

- If you suffer performance problems set the LOD and view distance to low values. The game should still look good but this helps a LOT. Consider turning off shadows, consider medium or low shaders if your GPU is the bottleneck.

Again not needed.

- Trading: Some people report problems that trade ships do not work as expected. In most cases this is not a bug with the trade ship AI but the ship did not get the right order through the trade menu. As mentioned above, we definitely want to improve this menu further, but most importantly you have to make sure that when you add a trade order to a ship, you click on NEXT after selecting the order and assigning it to the ship selected at the top of the menu. Then you select the amount and confirm the order. After this you should see that an order was added to the ships order queue. One thing we want to improve is management of this queue and show it more clearly in trade ship info menus.

Just took a bit of time to figure out how the comms work between ships, no problem ... where's the issue?

- There seems to be a bug with menus remaining open sometimes. If you end up with a non working menu, please see if changing the screen resolution or AA settings (ESC – settings – graphic settings) helps to make the menus work again. You can undo those changes after it works again. If this happens repeatedly please email information on how you reproduce this to info@egosoft.com

Never seen this problem.

###### Feedback about feature requests: ######

- Map and other menu improvement: We have a number of menu and map improvements planned. This includes more control over the map like the zoom that was suggested here and changing the layout of some of the text menus. We are also considering showing the “minimap” on the eventmonitor whenever there is “no signal” at the moment. These are a lot of individual improvements some of which will happen soon.

I was a a bit shocked by the state of the mapping system in the beginning but 13 hours later, I understand what they were going for and it make sense, so no issues with it now. If they are looking to improve it more, cool. I think the problem in the beginning was the map was empty, I hadn't been anywhere to in didn't make much sense when looked at, that not the case now.

- Autopilot / SETA: We will add some autopilot support. However it is our goal with X Rebirth that you do not need to run the game semi-automatically for extended periods of time. This is also he reason why we will not support SETA / SINZA time acceleration. There should never be a need to wait 20 minutes for your trade ships once you have multiple ships. You can queue orders and do many things in parallel. Time acceleration as a trick to accelerate trading will not be in X Rebirth.

this I understood before I started play, I saw the dev vids describing it? Didn't other out there? Mind boggling that people are still whining about this, it is not X:TC.

- Facial animations: We will look into improving facial animations.

Lets face it, X has always been crap in this area ... it's an X thing, I couldn't care less.

- External view / Ability to turn around in cockpit: This was asked for a few times. Yes we will look into this but it will be part of a larger update and take more time than just a few weeks. It will also be combined with support for looking around in the cockpit (e.g with a joystick POV hat) and maybe also support for Oculus Rift style VR. So please be aware that this feature will take some time to add.

:) oooh ... OR VR.

- Targeting hotkeys: Another feature that was requested a couple of times. Yes we will do this. Based on your feedback that is for one of the earlier updates even though such “explicit” targets only work in the mouse / keyboard mode. Not with controllers!

Hmmm... had no problems using the current control settings for anything so far.

- Talking to people on stations: We have a plan for an early patch (early december) which will make the conversations and finding NPCs for jobs a lot easier and more accessible. This has a high priority.

Hmmm? Okay, in their own time, no biggy.

- Skipping conversations: We will look into this, but I can not promise that this is always possible.

Why would I want to do that? I'm playing story mode for a reason. If I didn't want the story I have gone for the open game option in the beginning. People get a game with two settings, then whine about it when to choose the wrong mode to play?

- Joystick support: We are aware that joystick support (as opposed to gamepad) at this time is not perfect. We definitely will make this a priority for one of the next updates, but please allow a little time for this.

Don't play with joystick or gamepad (though I have them both) mouse and keys always seem best for me in past X games, same here. So I've experienced no issues.

Final note.

Could it be that a lot of people are just trying to play this game with a lacking system on 32 bit windows?

Minimum:
OS: Windows 8 (64-bit), Windows 7 SP1 (64-bit), Vista SP2 (64-bit), XP SP2 (64-bit)
Processor: Intel i-Series at 2GHz or AMD equivalent
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GT400 series with 512MB RAM or better, ATI 4870HD with 512MB RAM or better
DirectX: Version 9.0c
Hard Drive: 8 GB available space
Sound Card: DirectX 9.0c Compatible Sound Card
Additional Notes: These specs are still being determined

Taking it Egosoft are having to repeat this in the above, maybe some should have read the spec before buying the game? Taking it that ED will be 64 bit, what the betting there is going to be the same issue screamed out here come alpha, beta, gamma and release. Anyone want to take bets?

I tend to agree with you PacalB.

It does take a few hours to start having fun with this game (I mean gameplay fun, obviously graphics and scale are jaw-dropping from the get-go)...but that's how every Egosoft game is, and it's the way things will always be. To enjoy a fine wine such as the X series, one must have the patience to acquire the taste.

These games are for those with that patience. If ES was looking to embrace the casual users, they failed. But that's fine with me. They are good at depth, so keep doing it. And IMO, despite not being casual-friendly, X:R is significantly easier to play than all previous.

I've sunk about 10 hours and...having just boarded and stolen my second cap ship, with budding aspirations to become a station owner....I'm having an absolute blast.

It's rough, to be sure. But not as rough as those who spend 30 minutes with it and give in to ragequit would have you believe.

PS ~ Performance is an issue for most people, including myself (I have a high-end rig but not ultra-high-end). But it's certainly playable!

PPS ~ For all those who are complaining about not knowing how to do something, I know it's a bizarre idea but try glancing at the user manual ;) It explained everything I was confused about in a fairly concise fashion!
