Graphics Need Updating

Elite needs some serious work but graphics are not one of the areas that are lacking. I run this game on 1.0 supersampling and it looks awesome. I only have a GTX680ti and I get over 60 fps. Worry about the content, that's the elephant in the room.

I wouldn't call the graphics 10 years old really. They are pretty good imo. Click for full res.

Having said that, things are always changing, especially when/where planetary surfaces and celestial objects are concerned. FDEV wants to produce more LoDs both for them, and for the game assets that will be viewable in the future from a first person perspective.

So, OP I think that they are working on improving them. Hope that helps, cheers..C:

lol, my little adder pic! So cool

I agree, the graphics look really good and don't remind me of a 10 year old game.

Here's a couple more pics

Okay. I guess any opinion that conflicts with yours is automatically wrong, yeah? Like I said, the graphics are poor in comparison to the games being released today.

what planet you from lol, the graphics in the game are really, good, the textures are nice the whole game is very immersive, these are not 10 year old graphics, I suggest you re-install the game and or graphics card as there is something wrong with your system and or eyes or both.

Graphics is the one thing the game doesn't have to worry about. It's future-proofed quite nicely with its ability for 4k and 8k already built in (and more if I remember right).

Content FDEV, get on it.

The graphics are very modern. Looking at all the CURRENT screenshots in this thread or my own in game graphics and I am always amazed. I am a heavy gamer, I have a R9 290x and have Star Citizen as well. This game is very comparable to any modern game in the graphics department.

The one thing I would really like to see is variety between the stations and docking areas.
It's like no matter where I go in the galaxy it was all done by the same interior designer.

That is something they should open up to the community, then we would see some freaky stuff!

I think some aspects of the game look very good, but others could use another iteration or two. I certainly wouldn't say it's a bad looking game, however...

For me personally it's the cockpits that let things down a bit, and for me that's one of the most important parts of the game. I like the overall designs, but the implementation is a bit off at times (low-res textures, low poly details, missing trim, shoddily 'dirtied-up' textures, plus a few just messy geometry issues, i.e. mesh issues which need fixing).

Looking around the 'pit in a starport, where the lighting streams through the walls unobstructed, things do look quite out of date at times to be honest (see attached Python image), though I think the game overall is good.

One example of such a cockpit element which (for me) lets the side down is the orange straps fitted to the walls of most FdL vessels. This asset is used *a lot* and yet it's low detail, has a low res texture on it and the UV mapping isn't consistent (I'm not saying that these items should have a texture disproportionately high-res compared to the other items of the 'pit, the texel density should be relatively consistent, but I think that currently they are sub-standard and given their heavy usage should have been give more attention). This one thing on its own isn't a huge deal, but I find myself noticing quite a few bits and bobs like this which together bring down the visual quality and can at times make the game look quite cartoony (I know FD aren't going for photo-realism, but I don't think that a cartoony look is intentional either).

I suspect that most of my art gripes could be fixed relatively easily with another pass or two together with either an update to the lighting system or by baking in some GI/AO to the 'pits to alleviate the lack of any subtle shadows.

Attached a couple of screens; one shows the straps I mention, and the other the lack of shadow detail in the Python (also note here the lack of true light sources for the small orange lights dotted along the cabin walls)

The graphics are fine and right for the current hardware available, it would take a very expensive PC to run this game maxed out on a 4k monitor which very very few people own or have the money to buy.

FD have said that this game is scalable graphics wise.

I think the game can benefit from an HD Textures patch (mostly in the cockpits, unneeded for stations) and maybe some the fancy lighting effects from GEMFX, but otherwise it really does have a lot of moments where it looks pretty. The game is comparable to other lightweight games out there such as Mechwarrior Online in terms of texture quality.

Just look at the planets when you're flying around space for example, they have hardly any texture to them at all. They're very flat and one dimensional. All the colors feel washed out as well. ED lacks a realism and immersion feeling that's difficult to describe. When you compare it to something like Star Citizen it's pretty underwhelming.

It's slightly disingenuous to compare a real game to Star Citizen, at least until there's more to Star Citizen than vaporware and empty promises.

What Star Citizen currently has imo is the CryEngine muddy look (very noticable in the docking bay). It has some moments with the Asteroids but it needs much love.

I'd rather they focused on content. Yes you could max out the graphics but then how many gamers will be able to afford the cutting edge tech to fully appreciate it?

Did you custom colour your text..?
Cos I'm using "Elite Orange" forum Theme.. and I can't read your post..

odd..

Yep, he used colours and specified a font and text size, which obviously breaks with various skins and browser setups. Consider weirdly-formatted posts a sort of filter, like letters written in all-caps and green ink. You'll be amazed how often this "not worth reading" rule applies.

I can only guess you didn't look at all the screenshots a few posts up ... they successfully render your original post and the one quoted invalid!

SpecSavers for the win.

Aside from the (for me) immersion breaking pop-ins there are other more important things that needs adressing.
Multiple lightsources and better bump-mapping needs to be implemented.
I have a high-end system and I'm all for as much goodies as possible, but it should never, ever, replace content in games.
FDEV is right now working on content and they are getting there.

I dont know how hard it would be to get higher drawdistance in.
I also dont know anything about the engine itself; If the drawdistance is diffrent for each object or if it's a global setting.
Some stations seem to me to have greater drawdistance than others, but it might just be my subjective view...

^THIS +1

There's nothing wrong with the graphics at all, they are superb.

But I have to agree, ED sorely needs loads more content, and loads more variety. Docking at exactly the same interior, the same basic inner design of station wherever you are in the entire galaxy, just doesn't seem very believable. I'd love to think something is in the works to address this kinda thing. I understand it's a lot of work. Surely though, different areas of the galaxy would have their own styles and influences?

p.s. I consider myself a bit of an Elite fanboy.
