Indecisive Lurkers: Why you must get the rift

I've heard an oculus dev quoted (in PC Gamer) as saying that for VR to equivocate the perceived resolution of sitting in front of a 1080p 2D screen at standard distance, it would need to be 8k. I tend to believe heavily that VR isn't ready yet, and won't be until we have the exponential processing power required to run even half of that.

That being said, Elite is different. While VR isn't close to being ready for games like Skyrim or other "beautiful" games, with Elite, even with the sub-par resolution of the DK2, the experience is indeed mindblowing and I can't play without it. This echos thousands of people

Thank you yes, I have heard this many times from some incredibly passionate gamers. Its becoming apparent to me as I look from the outside in, that ED has found the sweetspot between graphics, a digital world construct, GUI and peripherals that maximizes the limits of the OR to really deliver the experience that VR promises. As I have noted on this thread and elsewhere, just dont have a beefy enough PC yet, but am now convinced ED and OR wont disappoint when I do.

And by the way, great 2nd video...all shot with the Rift?

There hasn't been a single person who wasn't blown away by E D on my Rift.
.
It is indescribable.
.
I am fortunate to have a good job and can afford a new Video Card and a Rift, but I ain't no millionaire and I have kids (and an understanding wife). The cost is achievable.
If you are into video games, then IMHO the Rift is a must buy.
.
E D ain't the only show in town either.
Try Alien Isolation..... you'll p!ss your pants.

"I can't afford it"

You really can't? You can't get a side-job? You can't find anything around the house to sell? You can't borrow from a friend and make a payment plan? Short of putting yourself in dire straits, which you should never never do, most people can find the money with enough determination. Get it second hand? Use your initiative.

It's the best gaming experience you'll have ever had, and will have for years. And not only is it the best. It's light-years better than your second best. It's worth every effort to get. For most people, it's not more than 2 weeks' pay. Get a side job for 2 weeks and you'll have it.

I'm sorry but I'm not taking a side job just to enhance my gaming experience.

I am not either, and I dont have an OR yet. But just to clarify what is an important point to me in all of this. Gaming is something people do with an awkward hunk of plastic in their hands (controller) while they have a big bag of chips balanced in their lap. Its kind of fun for awhile, kind of flashy and noisy... a good distraction, etc. The things I can do on my PC are near simulators and can be immersive, or at least have enough depth and control via peripherals to give me a very pleasant alternative to Seattle winters. Why haven't I made the leap to what is finally true VR? About 1000 things on my honeydo list and beautiful weather starting here in Seattle. I am being called to the mountains...and the never ending honey do list - Lame I know :)

Not sure what a honey do list is but have fun honey doing it. If you got OR ... you could well spend the next 5 months with your eyes about 5 cm from magnified pixels. Joyous as it is - appreciating the world around us is probably much more important. Or so my wife keeps telling me.

That is what I am trying to convince myself, but right now I would rather have my eyes shoved up against magnified pixels than building a hedge :):)

I was undecided about purchasing the Rift and playing Elite with it is stunning. The experience is so immersive it takes your breath away. It's not cheap but when is next generation technology?

One thing I wish to emphasise:

This thread is aimed at exactly what it says on the tin: Indecisive lurkers. People struggling to decide.

If you've already decided or have never even needed to decide in the first place, please do not feel threatened by this post. Just brush past it like dust motes floating in the air :)

lol what about if you disagree? :p

how is the OR for people who were glasses?

I don't have the DK2, but I do have the DK1. The focus is infinity, so if you are long sighted, (like most of us oldies), you wont have a problem. If you are short sighted, the kit came with an alternative set of lenses. You wont need you glasses while using the Rift.

I need my glasses for reading so I'll need them for the OR as well I'm assuming.

As long as it's still comfortable.

Just to weigh in for you dray, I am near-sighted due to astigmatism, but I do still need my prescription glasses for reading. However, I am perfectly fine in both DK1 and DK2 without them. The resolution of these current HMD's isnt even close to real life, so the tiny bit of natural blur from not wearing my glasses actually helps to hide the screendoor/pixels a bit. I assume that is not true for everyone, however. Just offering my 2 credits to try and help. =]

I have a dk2 on it's way, do you think two GTX 970s will be able to run it decently (better than low settings)? I don't think I've ever checked me email this often hoping to see it has shipped even though I'm fully aware it's Sunday and they probably aren't even at the office:p

I bought a 970 at the same time as the DK2 and am playing on medium settings fine, no judder, constant smooth gameplay and loving it.

Well that post put a stupid huge smile on my face. Is that with using Dr.Kaii's stickied thread with all his tips or is it like that out of the box for you? I'm really happy to hear that though, so I guess two 970s will be more than enough. Thinking about posting in the true cost of VR thread too because holy crap... two 970s, the thrustmaster warthog, now I'm seeing this buttkicker thing people keep mentioning...I want to feel it when I go into hyperspace. At this point I mine as well make a cockpit out of cardboard too and call it a day :D

Pretty much out of the box. I haven't changed shaders, I haven't oc'd card, just plugged it in, got it working and enjoyed playing ever since. I will tweak settings at some point but it completely blows my mind every time I put on the rift I've not felt the need to improve the experience yet :D

I have 2x 970's, you won't have any issues except in a res site if your running at max

Hi all,
I have been persuaded to go for the Rift.
Luckily, I'm off to the US in 6 weeks and will arrange to bring one back (huge saving).
I'm also considering bringing back a 980gtx to replace my 770gtx.

ED is worth it.

Cannot wait

Lee
