Indecisive Lurkers: Why you must get the rift

most definitely get a 980...
if you can swing over to Canada, you can save even more. Our dollar is tanking...haha
I bought my rift on our local classified for 400$ cad...thats like 200 pound.

the 980 can be had for 520 usd or ~350 pound

heck, buy 2 980s...haha

I have 2x 970's, you won't have any issues except in a res site if your running at max
May I ask what psu you have? I just got my OR and it wont turn on. It stayson for about a second after plugging it in then turns off and any attempt at pressing the power button it just does a quick flash and thats it. I think woth my two 970s, the thrustmaster warthog and my keyboard/mouse I don't have enough power. I'm using a z97 krait motherboard and an i5-4790k with a 700 watt psu. Sorry for spelling mistakes, on my phone at work.

?I have one msi gtx 970 running at max settings at 1080p resolution with no issues? Two maybe fun but overkill?

Sounds like you forgot to reconnect the 12V rail. Check if it's only that, otherwise it could be your psu. It could also be you've blown your motherboard...

I wish you the very best mate. Best way to tell is removing one and seeing what happens .

Edit: just woke up a bit more. What won't turn on, the PC or the OR?

Reconnect the 12volt rail? Can you explain that a little further? Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question, 10 hour overnight shift and I'm dead tired. Also it's the OR that won't turn on. I was playing elite just fine with my two 970s in sli but I think the OR may be pushing my psu over it's limits. Any fix that doesn't involve buying another psu is readily accepted too but if you think I need one do you think I could get away with upgrading from the 700w to an 850? The price tag on the higher wattage psu's like 1200 or 1600 is pretty hard to swallow.

Thanks a lot in advanced everyone all the help is greatly appreciated

EVGA SuperNova G2 750W '80 Plus Gold'

Make sure you have the separate power supply connected to your DK2 that comes in the box of goodies, also make sure the DK2 hdmi lead is in your first graphics card

I have X52 Pro
Logitech G27
and loads of other bits running off that pwr supply, although i did read somewhere http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/geforce_gtx_970_sli_review,4.html that 700w-800w was min for SLi with these cards

I would also recommend a separate powered usb hub for the DK2 tracking Camera

Just giving an update, I got it working and all set up.

edit: I was able to fix all of my problems.

First getting it working, pro-tip (sarcasm) install something's software before expecting it to work. I didn't download the run time.

The blur I mentioned before the edit: I actually fixed this using the nvidia DSR I had on the max resolution, I turned it down one notch and suddenly the game was much more in focus and clear. On top of that I used the OR configuration tool where you slide the green lines until it's just a sliver showing. I don't know if that had anything at all to do with it but I'd like to think so.

Huge thanks to the replies here and to drkaii for all of his help. I'm now enjoying ED on the rift with zero judder and the game is just breathtaking. I simply can't imagine playing a game any other way now. So to stop thread jacking, to those still on the fence, yeah, buy it.

Just a note that I am just made a move towards no longer being a lurker. Last night I ordered a GTX 970. Assuming I can get it running with my laptop I will likely order a RIFT. One step at a time, but getting there.

Got home from work yesterday and found my new DK2 delivered! Dinner eaten, boys in bed at 19:30 and the wife left watching TV, I set to work.
Everything connected, Oculus runtime installed, some settings in the Nvidia control panel changed (recommended in a stick), and fired up ED.
Took some tweaks in the game options, but with some persistence I have set it as best that my 770gtx can handle. I'm upgrading to a 980gtx in 5 weeks, off to the US for business and will bring one home.

Firstly, just WOW! I never in my life expected anything like this. The detail FD have put into the cockpit of my asp is amazing. I've spent most of my time just looking around. I'm currently nearly 2kly away from Sol exploring, so have not seen how it handles in a station.

I'll be spending a few hours tonight tweaking a little more.

As many other owners have said, you have to get one. I'm glad I did.

Happy Rifting!

Yeah, I'm also a recent Rift owner who is loving it. It takes a good deal of tweaking and some getting used to - you do feel a bit myopic in this game when trying to look at distant ships - but up close it's amazing. I was worried at first that the lack of resolution would make it really hard in combat, and indeed, when a small ship is 3km out it's pretty much just a blob, but as you close in, the field of view and the improved situational awareness make it so much easier to dogfight. I have never been able to pilot as well as I can now with the rift; staying on my target's tail is so much easier it almost feels like cheating. You can hold visual contact for almost the entire fight, and your brain is just much better at integrating that data than it is at integrating the hologram and radar data on your HUD.

It isn't perfect - the HUD could use some better optimization for the rift, some text is iffy, particularly if you're trying to move your eyes and not your head to focus on it, the resolution makes it seem like you're watching a television from the 1980s, but in spite of all of those things, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, hands down.

I'm glad people are getting it and reaping the benefits. I stand by my post, and I hopefully did give enough detail to make sure people don't make the wrong decision. It seems like people are happy. Good stuff.

Don't forget to join the VR wings thread and get your tweaking done nicely with my compendium. Both links in my sig

Just saying, OR is expected in 9-12 months of the original post of this thread.

I WAS RIGHT BABY.

Which means I was right about the other stuff too (A -> B etc.). So get it

The only reason this announcement just happened is because i ordered my DK2 last sunday (wanted to finally stop lurking) and it will arrive tomorrow...

i do see some parallels with my cigarette when waiting for the bus...

I know it's a dumb question but did you install the official beta driver for your Rift? I had the exact same issue (bought mine last week). Rift would not turn on, at all. Only for 1 sec and would turn itself off. Make sure you visit https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/#version=0.5.0.1-beta and download and install the "Oculus Runtime for Windows 0.5.0.1-beta Runtime ". Restart the computer. Worked for me.

This thread is what convinced me to order my rift last week. I got it today and all I can say is wow. When I first entered my ship I was stunned. I spent a good 10 minutes just looking around before even touching anything. The level of immersion is unlike anything I've ever experienced in a game. I've always been a heavy sim fan and invested heavily in my setups. I've been running multiple monitors since at least 03, I've always invested in controllers (saitek X45, Thrustmaster Warthog, Saitek Pedals etc...). I've done the other add-ons like track IR, gaming pads and all the other gear. NOTHING has ever been this ground breaking. I've only had my cobra 2 days, and while i had noticed it was a 2 seater, the overall cockpit didnt feel much bigger than the sidewinder. Sitting in the cockpit today was a completely different experience, it felt so roomy and when I look over and see the other seat I actually feel like someone hsould be sitting there. The depth the 3d adds is amazing and the feeling of immersion is unreal, and this is compared to me playing on 3 monitors with trackIR. While its not without its faults, the overall experience is game changing. Even knowing the CV1 release was just announced I have no regrets about ordering a DK2 this late in its life cycle. I've already made a hefty investment between the rift and a 970 to power it, but I'm already planning whats next. An Obutto and a new Skylake build are in my not to distant future.

I'm not sure if it's because I had the DK1 first, but that was awful resolution in comparison the the DK2 + the problems with drift and everything else up with DK1 didn't make it an enjoyable experience. It was like a little glimpse of what could be..

I can definitely play with the DK2 though for long periods and get totally sucked in, playing on a monitor now feels like playing half a game.

The biggest problem with playing on a monitor now is this - It's like your brain is thinking, why am I even bothering, I don't want to watch what I'm seeing, I want to see what I'm seeing around me. See There or Be There!

The Obutto Revolution is a seriously good investment and not just for Sims, It's a full triple monitor workstation.
I spend long hours all day coding so, it makes great sense + the immersion factor with ED + Rift + a decent HOTAS :) Awesome!

Thats why I'm willing to pay the price for it. I currently run a 4 monitor setup. The Obutto looks like it will be perfect for me since I use my pc for everything. It looks like a good all around setup that allows for regular computer use an productivity as much as it does gaming.

Hi guys, you've talked me into buying a DK2, however, my PC will require upgrade(s). My 2 areas of concern are my GFX card and my processor. I have a GTX560 card which I'm going to replace with a GTX970, but would an i5-2500k @ 3.3GHz (stock) CPU run ok?

If I only need to upgrade the GFX then great, it's a done deal, as my intention was to get the DK2 up and running now, then replace my PC altogether when the CV1 releases (then the kids get the old PC and DK2). However, if the CPU won't cut it, then I may as well get a new PC now, then upgrade the GFX card when the CV1 comes out then sell/shelf/bin DK2.

Thanks for any replies.
