What do you think DB meant by this?

However those permit systems were around since start, weren't they? ;)

Good point. Have any of us explorers mapped the edges of the permit systems? I wonder if there are interesting things near them.

We don't know that there weren't empty then but got filled up with alien goodness when Wings was released.

Wouldn't it be funny if they were open, now, and none of us had checked? They could be accessible since Wings, and the guys at FD could be laughing their tailpipes off wondering why nobody's noticed...

Every persistent multiplayer online game that I've played, since 1995 that has made a claim like this "oh, yes, it's mysterious, you just have to find it" has been false, in my experience.

Unless the developers are specific, it's marketing/lies/hype/vaporware. They think or say what they think might be coming in the future, but it's not in the game right now. Steve Danuser & the Froglok debacle? I'm looking at you. ;)

So, I'll be the first to throw down the gauntlet: I don't believe him. At all. IMO: He's either twisting words to sound clever, or alluding to a future feature that will need to be patched in to be active. It's not active today, at this moment.

I think the unkown artifacts can be found in some permit system with salvage convoys that have been added in 1.2

IIRC these are : Witch's Reach, LFT 509. No stations in there so impossible to know where to get the permit

That's still not the original source. ;)

He did say this though:

What I had in mind has been there since Wings...

Which still might just mean the commodity above in itself, but in context it would be weird if he meant a commodity, so who knows? ;)

LOL!
Like .0001%

My favorite scary scenario would be some explorer visits a system and brings back something like ants. Not big H. R. Geiger-esque xenomorphs. Just little wee bitty ants. Only, they reproduce really fast, are nearly indestructible, and love to eat polyvinylchloride.

Been waiting to use this.

I haven't heard of anyone discovering a generation ship yet, and it would not surprise me if they were not announced.

Hollowed-asteroid-stations (as secret smuggler bases) could maybe be unannounced (major props if something that cool was just slipped in without fanfare)

I'm going to have to start paying more attention to USS's!

It is worth re-reading the original question that was asked:

When will there be non-celestial things to discover in deep space?

Answer: There already are....."non-celestial things to discover in deep space."

If they were hidden in those still locked permit systems, they wouldn't already be discoverable.

quod erat demonstrandum ;)

Wasn't there some GalNet news recently about weapons of unknown origin being sold somewhere?

I would assume that Powerplay and the other additions previous (CG #1 Yembo) would lean toward a story line of something happening close by the human zone that these new powers can fight over.
I have been bouncing around doing a walkabout 400-600 ly out and I still find large pockets of unclaimed systems.

Make a story like a waterworld just above the border of Fed/empire is like the fountain of youth. First Power to establish a trade station gets to play king of the mountain/fountain. The water only works if you drink it from a Panite chalice...yada yada yada.

I bet there are weak signal sources out in the black but nobody's taken the time to look for them or noticed them.

Most explorers wouldn't go near a WSS/USS/SSS even if they saw one out there , no shields, no guns, and definitely no cargo scoop...:)

I partially mapped 3 of the ones I found on my journey to the far side, but that was before 1.2, and those were very distant, over 50,000 LYs from home. Since I got back I've mapped two more much closer to home but it takes weeks working alone or in a 2 man wing. I'd guess that whatever Braben is talking about is much closer to home, probably on frontier borders if its to be found in anyone's lifetime :D
