Fiction Elite: Legacy

Couple of things that have probably been discussed over and over and over:

Firstly, on the first page there is mention that Freeholm is celebrating two 10 year anniversaries, but only goes on to mention one, unless I am an idiot.

Secondly about Artemis in the book:

It's not the same as the real Artemis, just want to know why? Is it because players came along and changed the factions around just to annoy Michael (I mean, Freeholm being Empire and Laphria being Artemis Resistence almost mocks the story)? Or has he just used pure artistic licence? Or is it based in the future/past? Or will it be manually changed at some point?

Also, why is Freeholm an outpost in the game? Where is "The Belt"? Appears on the system map but not in the Navigation panel.

Now that I've finished it, just have to say I loved it. It was hard to get into at first, like any book that's introducing brand new characters and explaining the setting, but once I got past that, I was hooked. Couldn't put it down. The story was extremely gripping and well conceived, the characters were all fascinating, the interplay between them really kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen. Also, a sci-fi story that's completely original and lacking in cliché is an outstanding achievement. But I'm now sold on Michael's writing, he's a top author and I'll look out for his works in the future.

Michael, very impressed. Please keep up the good work!

I wish I could write my own, there's literally an entire galaxy of stories to be told, but I can't really afford £4,500 right now ;)

The two ten year anniversaries are Freeholm's freedom and the two pilots at the start being partners.

Players have changed the system since I wrote the book :)

You'd need to find clusters in the belt to have them listed in the nav panel. It's an outpost because there isn't support for asteroid bases in game.

I'm pleased you liked it. If you want to see my other sci-fi writing check out Sun Dragon.

Saying this - are asteroid bases coming any time soon? Still having to find time to read book completely :/

Crazy players, maybe I should organise a group to flip the factions back. I have an army of VR players standing by for orders.

I will definitely check it out. Please feel free to check out my "Deep Space Survey" videos - short exploration episodes with captions. Link in my sig. I'm extremely proud of them, I'd be truly honoured if someone at Frontier had a look.

Either way, thanks for providing the platform to create such videos, and the adventures they document! What a game

See his next answer to my question. There's still hope ;)

Yes, but "Not soon I'm afraid" doesn't sound too encouraging.

Actually, I don't recall Michael ever ruling out any feature explicitly, so this might be as near to "not gonna happen" as we'll ever get.

[Asteroid stations coming] not soon I'm afraid.

This is a real bummer. :( They were in one of the earliest concept drawings released and much looked forward to. Given that the (your) official novella features one of them prominently, I'd think if any new station types would be released, hollow asteroids would be one of them. So I guess all new station types are coming "not soon I'm afraid".

Still, we know they are coming. Even with the 100+ devs on the job, Frontier have their hands full for the next decade. It's great actually, no matter how impatient we may get at times.

I could be wrong, but you almost sound proud. Like the first time a man's son beats him at chess or something.

p.s. still hoping I can convince you to watch one of my deep space survey videos, or let me know that someone in the team has seen them - author's pride and what-not ;)

EDIT: Ordered Sun Dragon. I'm looking forward!

For me it's a key part of the game. The book is part of the history of the game world, but what players are doing is driving it.

Cool videos!

I understand. In so many ways it does feel much more than a "game". No that's not right. It's a game in the truest sense.

And thanks!

Not really. When they don't plan to do something, they outright say it ("no plans of doing this" would be correct answer then, heard it many times during Beta for example). Plans may change, also in opposite direction, but with this they didn't rule them out.

That's how Michael has communicated about feature set of the game in the past (during Alpha and Beta) and and mostly it has been correct.

I've finished my reading of Elite: Legacy and I've enjoyed it very much. It's a well written book, with a gripping, well developed and very original plot. I fully recommend it, and not only to Elite: Dangerous fans, because it is a sci-fi story very enjoyable by any sci-fi enthusiast, with the needed explanation of the ships, systems, technology and general background embedded in the novel. I'm looking forward to your next release.

Yes they will be when I've had chance to make the corrrections.

Michael

Hi Michael,

I was wondering if you've had a chance yet to correct the typos? I want to read your book but I'm holding off so I can read the corrected version. (I will be reading it on Kindle.)

Thanks.
