Ships The Diamondback is Forthcoming - Time to be EXCITED!?

Oooo weee, I'm already working towards getting mine at a discount ;)

The Diamondback is a SMALL ship. A one seater.

Look at that sexy, 3-pipe butt. Mmm-mmmmm!

I'm so ready.

Those two plates on the rear aft sides annoy me. =-\ What possible purpose could they serve? Lakon is supposed to be function over form.

EDIT:

Those pictures do not look bigger than a class 4 FSD, per my prediction.

FSD class isn't the only important thing to consider. If the ship is light enough (though for a class 4, it'd have to be around 145 fitted tonnage for me to want it with a Class 4 Friendship Drive), it can still jump far.

I'm also rather curious how you can determine FSD class from a screen shot. Aren't those nozzles and such just the thrusters?

Absolutely, what's important for jump range is hull mass and FSD class together. Since I expect the diamondback to have good range, I also predicted it will have mass somewhere between the viper and the T6, e.g. between 60 and 155 T, expected value 100 T.

I am determining FSD class based on my approximation of ship size -- the class grows roughly linearly with ship size. The pictures of the diamondback make it seem like it is too large to have a class 3 FSD (lightest ship with this class is the adder), and too small to have a class 5 FSD (lightest ship with this class is the asp).

If the diamondback is light enough, it may well outjump the asp with a lower class FSD similarly to how the asp outjumps a T9.

I now expect that a part of the point of the diamondback is to bridge the gap between the adder and the asp, and replace the T6 for this. A best in slot asp kit is about 47-50 million, a best in slot adder is maybe 5 million, and a best in slot T6 is about 15-23 million. I expect the best in slot diamondback to be about the same 15-25 million range. I still stand by my prediction of the maneuverability rating of 7 -- halfway between asp's 6 and adder's 8.

The Diamondback is a SMALL ship. A one seater with a LARGE hardpoint on the bottom.

I don't see any hardpoints on the bottom. I see a cargo hatch.

I do see what could be two medium and two small hardpoints, one on each side.

If the ship is light enough (though for a class 4, it'd have to be around 145 fitted tonnage for me to want it with a Class 4 Friendship Drive), it can still jump far.

It looks like it might be smaller than a Viper. I don't think this ship will be too much more than 100 tons fully equipped.

it's a bad Cobra :x

Or a better Cobra, if you don't need all the internal space.

I see this being roughly Cobra sized, without all the cargo fluff that isn't essential to either combat or exploring. This is really a stripped down, bare bones ship. I'm hoping that they give it the jump range and fuel tank to match so it is an effective choice for explorers.

I think it's pretty safe to assume that the Diamondback is long-range Viper. I don't see it as an replacement for my Asp.

i'm almost certain me to, less shield/speed, more jump range, same weapons/cargo/power nightmare

we will forget it very soon

Viper has no power problems if you learn how module priority works! From a pure explorer point of view, the point of this ship is to be something as maneuverable as an adder, but with better jump range. I expect from the combat point of view, the point of this ship is it will be "turny" like a vulture, but have decent jump range too in full combat kit.

Modified predictions:

Hull mass between 60 and 155 T (100 T or so). Class 4 FSD. 16 T tank (so 5 jumps on base tank). Class 5, class 4 utility slot, a few low ones. 2 small, 3 medium hardpoints. Cost between 5-10 mil. Maneuverability 7.
