I've tried to find the answer to this, can you actually get the ship to navigate to sag a* in one go?

Will leaving it centered on sag a* plan a route, or do you need to constantly plot 500 ly routes as you travel?

I'm currently in a station that is 25705.24 ly from there, is this about the last station on the way?

The route planner only works for 1000 ly max, so you have to break it down into smaller chunks, many people recommend using multiples of your jump range. As for the station I'm not sure, maybe New Yemba or 17 Draconis are closer but they might not be, all I can say for certain is that they are well away from any other stations.

Hi fergal, maximum plot range is currently 1000 light years. so no ..you have to make 26 odd plots to get there. (photonic ninja)
if you filter your map by economy or population and then look about you can see where occupied space ends.
this is probably the most hardcore version of a buckyball there is though and you may be more interested in the shorter duration numbered buckyballs that don't require a day of your time or more.
Buckyball 8 is 'coming soon'

if you want to have a go at this buckyball A* run part of the challenge of the one sitting version of the run is good plotting.
this buckyball at its most competitive end is an endurance challenge , but part of the beauty of the buckyball is that it welcomes and celebrates all types of runners and the idea is just to get there relatively quickly in what time you have spare to play elite.
one of us , one of us, one of us... etc etc. ;)

Thanks guys, looks like plotting the best route is half the battle.
I've only been out 600 ly or so twice, 26000 looks far to say the least :)

pick a target a 1000 ly away.. and then race to it.. and then back.. you now have a base time for how long itd take you on average to jump 1000 ly, times that by 26 you've now got an idea of how long itll take to get to the core..
plotting in the core really slows down, the plotter seems to work like a protruding stick, so your quickest plot will be close to a multiplication of your jump range when you get into the core.
i.e. jump range 32.4 (x30 is 972) quickest plot should be 970 ish. plotting 999 could take an hour. 970 shouldn't be more than a few minutes, if you want to go quick.. try and get your jump range up past 30.. so hauler, type 6 , asp , conda. and make sure you can do 2 full range jumps at least with your set up. and choose the biggest scoop you can fit.

Good advice robinjb.
I'm off to give it a crack, just about to leave Sol.
I don't think I will be setting any records, except maybe slowest to arrive :)

This is CMDR McFergus signing off in the Coal Powered Brick (Type 6).

*edit, about 1000 ly from Sol, took about 35-40 mins. I stopped to scan 2 stars, someone beat me to it :(

After you've gone 26,000 LY and come back, the next time you see someone complain that "800 LY is too far!" you'll just scoff and snigger at him... :) Personally, I think that the Orion cluster that is 1,300 LY away from Sol is "nearby" now... I use it to test loadouts on ships that I want to race to Sag A*

Anyway you need to start at Galileo Station around the moon (or the station in Wolf 359) to have an "official Buckyball recorded time". If you start at any other station, it is just noted under the "unofficial" times on the board.

I've been going for about 2 1/2 hours, done over 4000ly I think.

CMDR Barton Smith met his end at Sagittarius A* this morning at 07.53(GMT). Third victim in 24 hours. Explorers are not getting the message it seems... Stay out of Sagittarius A*.
To his credit CMDR Barton Smith did not attempt to combat log and he died with honor.

I was thinking of self destructing when I get there to save me the return trip.
I guess you can do me a favor.

My pace has been much slower, but we are likely about the same distance out at this point.

Hopefully I'll be able to cover more space today than I was able to yesterday.

Good luck out there fergal, god speed commander!

P.S. did you remember to feed the cat before you left?

You're talking to the wrong crowd here.

We're not explorers :p

EDIT: Ships blowing up are a **NORMAL** occurrence for us. Ask any Buckyballer :) So I don't think your ominous message is having the desired effect...

Who said he was an explorer? could just be a baller. Also if you want to inform explorers, then post on the explorer forum shrub boy.

Oh look. Wondered when this was gonna happen. TheGman2 has showed up here to I guess instill some panic and, most importantly draw some attention to himself now that his star is starting to fade after just a couple days. He honestly was hoping to come in here and find an announcement that the race was cancelled and everyone was whispering his name in awe.

Hate to break the news but the shock of what you did is over. It's expected now. The fact that you have to go around reminding people about it here and in other threads is pretty much proof of that. There are a million jerkwads out there. When you get bored and move on because nobody's talking about you, ten other people will step in and take your place.

You know the real tragedy? All your effort to get out to Sag A* could have been put to use here as part of the race. You could actually be famous in the game like Alot or Kligg or Anuranium in a way that people will remember more than a week from now. You might have even gotten to know some pretty cool people, not to mention picked up a sweet, sweet bumper sticker in the process. (Everybody loves bumper stickers.)

Instead, you're deliberately trying to ruin other peoples' fun. I don't even feel anger toward you any more. I got over that after the first day. Even the pity for you has dried up pretty quick seeing as how you're trying to milk it.

Now I just don't care.

Ladies and gents in the thread, kindly refrain from responding to interlopers such as this. Let's keep the carpets clean.

Two quick questions. 1) I have totally failed to spot the interesting addition to the big board, clue? 2) I've been tinkering with AutoHotKey (wanted to rig up an automated, regular screen capture for my run) - anyway, it occured to me that I could quite easily create a macro that opened up the star map, zoomed out, took me forwards 1000ly and zoomed back in again all ready to choose my next waypoint. Could easily shave 15 minutes off my journey (which would give me time to heat up my soup rather than just drinking it out of the tin). The thing is, would Bucky approve or would he consider this to be a demonstration of low moral fibre?

The Nomad is back in racing configuration and docked at Galileo, hoping to depart on my second run at approx 0:00 GMT. Hoping to make it there in 12 hours this time, I've kept exactly the same configuration as last time, so hopefully I know exactly what my magic number is navigating in the core. :)

Dead impressed with Bucky's time, I don't think that'll be beaten for a while - no wonder he didn't bother entering the official race! :D

I thought it would take 2 weeks :)
