Why ddoesn't it make sense?
Valve want's a cut of every microtransaction done on every game they sell AFAIK - there was quite 'famous' clash between Valve and EA regarding that.
It wouldn't make sense for Valve to sell games and then allow developers to sell microtransactions intependently.
Once you linked your ED with steam you are treated like a person that bought the game from Steam
My edit was a little slow, apologies. FDEV originally stated the opposite - that only sales through Steam would have a cut taken by Valve - so we're currently unsure if this is a misunderstanding or a misspeaking on Ed's part.
Guess steam ain't all it is cracked up to be...seems it's just another place to buy stuff...
It is almost as if being granted a steam key says to a publisher that steam brought you this individual's business now give us almost a third of all that revenue. Which isn't true...most people were drawn to ED on its own merits and not through some promotion on Steam....eh
Is it really worth 30% of future revenue to be listed on some ranking in Steam? Is it worth it to have reviews in Steam? Is it worth that cut so that individuals can guilt themselves with how much they have played the game?
I can't answer that...I just wonder if the decision was purely down to fan service or actually has some verifiable profit motive.
Steam publishing means massive exposure. Elite's player count doubled upon the Steam launch. But the problem is that many Steam users are, eh, not really the Elite type, so there's a lot of negative reviews equating to "I'm too dense to figure this out/the game didn't hand me an Anaconda during the tutorial so this game sucks!". I mainly want to link my account to add my positive voice, but not at the cost of Valve taking 30% of the future money I try to give to FDEV.
Keep in mind that the largest percentage of Steam's playerbase was attracted to it via F2P TF2, DOTA 2, or CS:GO. These players tend to expect something much more fast paced and more forgiving than Elite. The trailers which to us are tongue-in-cheek imply to them nothing but fast paced shoot em up spaceship action with little in the way of permanent consequences.
