News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

I expect that generating steam keys is free, but by doing so any future FD store purchases become subject to the "valve tax". A bit of confirmation on that point wouldn't hurt but it makes sense to me.

Yeah, that's a fair interpretation. We don't think of it as a tax though, just part of working with third party retailers.

Frankly, I'm just a tich annoyed we haven't gotten an official clarification on this.

You really should have made an attempt to read the thread. Even some past posts on the last few pages.

The SushiCW quote is what Ed responded to with his quote. Just to clarify for you Ed works for FD so he'll have more information than anyone and is the only trustable source we have here. So he has intimated there is some kind of tax/cut, however you want to call it. And of course, there was the whole EA debacle a few years back.

As things stand, it appears to be clear.

wish some people would just stop gettin their knickers in a twist. if you have concerns then dont generate the key, if you want to use steam then go ahead its an OPTION your CHOICE

It's sadly not clear.

Are we to assume that Steam is logging into and managing EliteDangerous.com? Are we assuming that Steam somehow has access to Frontier's books? Or would it make more sense that Steam was more interested in purchases made through Steam?

That is the confusion.

Ditto for me! But the key was added to which account? Steam or FD? And if so how do we get to it? Much grumbles.
I guess it was added to the FD Account, as the next step would be to copy the key to the steam-interface. The problem seems to be, that the key is generated seperately and the lines that should show it are not shown anywhere. I hope the codes are logged somewhere and can be retreived as soon as the servers are fully funtional again.

Maybe it would have been "better" to implement the key as a 0-prized, downloadable item like Elite '84.

I give up for now... I think linking my account to steam for the key killed the zaonce store just. Whole site seems dead now. For those that did it earlier today -dDo you get the option for the beta via Steam or only the normal version?

Lori... Ed didn't say that part. Ed's REPLY was that it was a "fair interpretation", implying it was not a clear fact, and an approximation of one.

It's one of those cases where a person says yes in a slightly obscure way because to elaborate further would start disclosing the terms of an agreement.

Yes it is clear. Again, reading the thread would have given you more information. Right now we don't know the nature of the commercial agreement between FD and Steam. Valve don't have to have access to any FD systems. Part of the agreement which FD would have to have been happy with, may simply have been to report numbers.

Right now we have a comment from a staff member which clearly intimates such a practice is ongoing. It really can't be clearer as things stand. We have no grounds not to believe Ed.

Jim... it's 367 posts, some of them rants, most of them rather uninformed. I think it's a bit early to call it decided or clear. Unless you have insight that hasn't been shared.

Anyways it goes, the deal is done. I'll be generating my key. I just wanted people to understand that they were doing Frontier more of a favor by getting their key, then not. There is a touch of fear mongering here, and people should feel comfortable getting their key, enjoying their game, and not believing they are stabbing their beloved game in the back.

I think that's fair.

Excactly, otherwise he would have just denied it.

Besides, if you think it logically, why does he even tell us to stick to ED store? We already have the game and the Steam store DOES NOT SELL add-ons, so you are going to buy they from the ED store anyway. It can only mean one thing.

Yes! It can only mean one thing! That if you purchase through the ED store, the money goes to ED, regardless of a Steam account. I got that too.

Thx for update. Yep, already tried that and now the magic 'partner key' button has disappeared. I'll leave until another day... :D

Chrome wasn't showing Partner Keys. Just went to Opera browser and logged in. Got my key straight away. Use Opera if you are having trouble

I provided you with the quote from Ed which was backed up by original quote he responded to. I actually saved you the good bit of the work. The insight as it is has been shared a good few times now so the understanding you are trying to share with people is ill informed. Please go ahead and continue to dispute the only decent source of information we have on this topic. It just looks silly when you do.

Help a noob out here a minute. I have ED already installed. I have generated a steam key and activated the product on steam. I don't really want to download a new instance of the game (main fear - starting from scratch in a sidey) but I'd like steam to use my previous installation. Is there any way to do this? Please explain like I'm five...
Thanking thee.
