PVP arena mode confirmed - xBox Trailer

I listened with enthusiasm to everything DB was saying. Along with reading the DDF. I knew it was ambitious, but that is what I expected from the franchise. It's now very easy to become angry with DB and FDev. We have many opinions and second-guesses on where E D is going, what it will become. Best thing to do is step back and wait, and keep your fingers crossed.

Agreed, that one has to step back and regain some perspective, but I don't really like to live in false hope. I just watched the E3 demo of No Man's Sky and to be honest it looks like it will have everything from day one that Elite should have had for an explorable universe with so many stars to reach out to.

I'll have to look into it more, but he said it will have fleshed out trading, combat and more, so I'm looking forward to that now.

Silver is a free account - as with other multiplayer titles on Xbox One you need to have a Gold Live account to play multiplayer. This does not affect the PC version.

Michael

thankyou for clarifying that Micheal...
I do not own an XBOX so have no idea what accounts are required etc for play, although as a side point I do have a live account for rockstar games :D anyhoo as long as it does not affect open play on PC / MAC and is only due to XBOX's multiplayer system so only going to affect that platform then all is good... :D

Wow that demo of No Man's Sky looks awesome. Elite has got it beaten graphically, but that's about it.

You played it then?

Yeah I played the video and watched it as well :D it does look impressive and is on my list of games to purchase when its released later this year...

ED does have less cartoony graphics I guess but from looking at the planetary stuff I have seen in the various NMS videos, FDev will have their work seriously cut out for them when it comes to planetary landings in ED because I feel that NMS will set the bar to some degree for what we should be expecting as a minimum when ED Planetary landings is implemented...

But you know nothing about the gameplay? We've seen you can wonder around a procedural environment - note: they always looks very samey to me - but we really have no idea of what you'll do, and most importantly, how interesting it will be.

Thus far it looks like you land on a planet, find creatures, scan then, and upload the info. TBH doesn't seem that inspiring?

Still looks far more interesting than point ship at planet scan happens, and lets face it the gameplay in Elite is average at best.

Liar. This is lip service at best.

You launch XBox client with premium and exclusive XBox only content and then have the gall to turn around and say this? Do you think us fools?

Care to specify exactly what he is "lying" about?

Possibly... In my mind it comes down to realism/depth. If NMS tries to be realistic in its rendition, then fabuous... I think that's where ED does things well. But if it's clearly just cartoon planets/animals which all look rather similar, then I think it will wear thin quickly.

And of course (IMHO) the same problem exists in ED's exploration at the moment too. Although it feels realistic, there's not enough variety/depth to exploration. It needs a big dose of development effort IMHO.

The arena stuff - is this the whole Elite Dangerous E3 announcement for this year?

Kind of looks that way - there is more detail on the Arena thing due today - and MB is due to tell us something later this week.

My expectations are reined in..

Well, I suppose it's down to taste. I mean, graphics is something I always judge by artstyle. For example, I consider Dishonoured to be a beautiful game with great graphics, but it's not because it's photorealisitic obviously. It's like a watercolour picture.

Another example, Borderlands isn't cutting edge graphically, nor was BioShock, with the old Unreal Engine 3, but both those series look really good for the aesthetic they were trying to go for, even if they might not suit every taste. So, for me NMS looks pretty and exciting, and consistent. That's what matters.

I remember Sean Murry mentioning once they went for what people are calling a 'cartoony' style because it was reminiscent of early 50s era sci-fi books and comics - a bit like the artwork in the Fallout universe.

So, I wouldn't say Elite has it beaten graphically, per se. I'd argue that as a matter of priorities, for Hello Games, a studio of around a ten person team, it's probably a good choice to have gone with this style. Their procedural engine can probably more build environments and objects to look more consistent because of it too.

Well, apart from the exploration of diverse, colourful worlds, there is combat which we've see, and some form of trading progressing mentioned, it's already more than I can do in Elite.

I'm not expecting a lot, to be honest, to start with anyway, but if we believe Frontier can build on what they've done, I think it's fair to say so can Hello Games, even though they are a fraction of the man power and budget.

I don't believe NMS has Powerplay, so they're already a step ahead there... :)

It's not the cartoony style I was referring too. It was the spaceship design/graphics, both the outside and especially the cockpit design, that I was referring too. I felt it looked quite blocky and rather 1990s in appearance, still there is plenty of time to improve the texturing etc. (and they may be better in reality than on the video) before release and anyway I've always felt gameplay is more important than graphics. The reason I commented on it is because I consider the graphics in Elite to be the one part of the game that is truly first class.

I would suggest that Michael is taking several liberties with the reason for doing this on the XBox first. Hands up anyone who thinks it is because 'it fits the XBox audience so well'. Anyone? Hands up who thinks it is because Microsoft paid them to have those exclusive rights as part of the XBox contractual conversations. Ah, nearly all of you. OK, now hands up who thinks that taking that money was a bad idea. OK, a few hands here and there, but not many. I, at least, am a fairly big boy, and I could easily take an answer along the lines of "For reasons to do with the contractual negotiations with Microsoft". I suspect most of could easily take that. So why not tell us that, if it is the truth?

---

I have no complaints with what I believe the true reason to be. If it was, in fact, for the reason that Michael says, they I have several grounds for complain - percieved broken promises about PC first and a beta testing right, testing a feature with noobs who will not know how or what to test, and so on.

((Of course, I accept that it fits the XBox well. I even accept that if they had to offer up some exclusive deal to Microsoft as part of the negotiations, that this was a very sensible thing to offer up. In fact, I cannot think of anything better for that audience amongst the features we are waiting for (not that that was in that list, of course :) ) ))

You want the truth? You can't HANDLE the truth!

Oh, I get you now. Yes, I agree Elite's visuals are one of its strongest points. Still, I also go with gameplay over graphics, as that's what keeps you invested and playing for the long term. I think that's where Elite fails for me, and I hope NMS will learn from that and have a strategy to make sure they can fill their worlds with more meaningful activities.

CQC is PVP only.

Michael

So those who play solo don't get any benefit from this additional content, and those who have poor quality internet will get a substandard experience if they choose to participate at all (online PvP is ALWAYS negatively affected by latency discrepancy between participants in my experience). The precedent is set in having solo, private groups and open all sharing the same content, the same simulation AND the same in-game rewards but now we're saying that this will no longer be the case because Frontier don't want to include NPC opponents (assuming the CQC rewards are only available from PvP). What do you propose in situations where there are insufficient numbers to fill both sides of a match equally? Come on, it's not that hard surely to have the ability to include NPCs as opponents, even if that were to reduce the rate at which these PvP rewards are earned (or even disable the ability to earn them)......
