Federal Powers are too weak!

The Federation has the worst position in the galaxy; underneath the Alliance and above the Empire and Independent Powers. This means we are always getting attacked. Our fortifications are always cancelled, and we only just hold on to them. Whereas Arissa Lavingy-Duval (I think i spelled that right), second in terms of power, has nearly all systems fortified. We can't do anything, and there is no reason to join Hudson; the special module, a frag cannon that does less power is useless, all Hudson does is combat which makes it hard and we are always being attacked. The Federation has no decent ships either; we all know that the only Fed ship, the Dropship, doesn't compare to the Clipper or even the Courier. It looks as if the F63 Condor will be added soon, as in the XBox 1 trailer we saw the cockpit of one, but no one will fly it, because it breaks if you so much as look at it. The Federal Corvette needs to be added soon and be like the Anaconda, but cheaper, so that the Federation has a chance. As it is, there is little benefit to joining any Federal power at the minute. We have plenty of idiots/intentional griefers prepping bad systems, and we can't fortify our systems. Hudson is going to drop next cycle, and soom the Empire will take all we have. Nanomam isn't even a Federation system, which really makes me think FD are just setting up Hudson to fall down. Nearly all the Commumity Goals are aimed at the Empire, and the Federation gets little to no attention, aside from when they killed off Halsey, presumably so they didn't need to bother making a profile for her Power.A much better argument like this can be found at http://www.reddit.com/r/FederalNavy/comments/39pcwt/why_even_bother/

Basically, for PowerPlay to be fair for us Fed supporters, we need Hudson at least (as you can guess, i joined Hudson which is why i refer to him as opposed to Winters) to have a chance against the Empire. We have no strengths, and as all players seem to join the Empire it's only a matter of time until the Federation falls. We need direct interference from above (i.e. Frontier) to even the odds for the Federation.

If people can stop fortifying at 10000% (100% is enough) and dedicate their resources to undermining enemy powers, we'll be fine.

Hudson 477 systems
Winters 290 systems

Lavigny 245 systems
Torval 205 systems
Patreus 133 systems
Aisling 134 systems

767 Federation Powers Systems
717 Imperial Powers systems

Thats right, the 2 Federation Powers are larger than the 4 Imperial Powers combined.
Thats after the expansion last cycle.

Add onto that all 4 imperial powers, while not fighting each other directly, are all vying for pretty much the same systems to expand into as each other. It's going to get tight and complex, fast.

Meanwhile, the two federal powers have the largest territory, = the largest fronts to expand into. Yes, larger territory is harder to maintain, but sustaining existing control systems is easier, so provided they can do that, they'll *still* maintain a stronger presence than the other factions.

As one of Senator Patreus' advisors/organisers, I have little sympathy for the OP. Our fortifications are all cancelled without fail every cycle. I have to deal with commanders pleading for help from almost every sector, and other commanders who outright disobey orders about where they should be targeting. I'm tired of peoples' preconceptions about the Senator and of my integrity being questioned. If people want to know why I defected from the Federation to pledge to the service of the Senator, they should listen to the true story.

True.

But since its in general easier to fortify player will be biased towards that.

FD should perhaps think to put a cap or premium on the number of fortification merits a control system hands out.

Or When enough have been delivered to cover the necesary amount, then remove the ability to fast track merits from that control systems.
Note: cap should be implemented on the control system end and not on the delivery end.

It could be done in several ways to help channel player behaviour.

Above could easily backfire though.
If implemented players can no longer get fast merits from fortification.
They would now have to get it from preparation, which will probably just end in a loot of useless systems being prepped by players who dont care about the Power.

So now we need another design change to prevent that from happening.

EDIT: Almost forgot, I dont think the Alliance Power is bad off.
I predict a massive expansion by Mahon which will eventually result in FD taking action and creating someform of split in the Alliance which will end up with two seperate Alliance Powers.

Iam btw a member of the Alliance Power.

This matters absolutely *zero*. The number of systems you control is absolutely meaningless in Powerplay. Other factors, mainly player activity and position, are immeasurably more important. You see that already - Federation powers already fall behind Empire ones in CC income. Why is that? I would like to direct your attention to this thread and this document in particular. Long story short, Imperial Powers are seeing pretty much no Opposition or Undermining thanks to current Powerplay mechanics. Federation Powers are seeing the bulk of overall opposition and undermining in the game. Activity numbers across Powers make it quite clear that the overwhelming majority of players have sided with Imperial powers, mostly Aisling and Arissa.

From this it sounds as if the problem is that Hudson doesn't have enough supporters. In which case yes, his power will wane. But that doesn't guarantee that he won't be able to rise again.

Asking for changes in the second cycle of the game is somewhat premature.

We already know what the issues are. One, the overwhelming lore and GalNet focus on the Empire, is being fixed. The other, the fact that some Powers have great rewards and others offer trash, and that the Empire offers useful ships while other factions don't, still need to be addressed. Those aren't problems where we need to wait and see how they will turn out - it's something that needs to be addressed ASAP.

The amount of opposition Patreus is experiencing is a lot compared to other Imperial Powers, but absolutely nothing compared to Winters or Hudson.

if the larger powers dont have the respective large amount of supporters, then it will fail. That's how it is designed to work.

I supported the federation until the 1.3 dropped. The powers available didn't really speak to me at all. I dont like either fed power. So I went with independent Utopian. Sure it has that aura of religious zealot-ism not seen since the spanish inquisition... but it still feels better than playing for the Fed powers. At least if my power fails I wont be stuck watching it shrink for very long - so I got that working for me. Wonder if power dissolving is treated like leaving it or differently.

Incidentally, you may well see a mass defection from Arissa and Aisling if Kahina ever ends up as a Power.

The Prism system is currently on the edge of Patreus' influence. It was quickly over taken in the Beta. If it ends up being part of Patreus' empire it will be in direct conflict with the 'canon lore' I thought I had established with my book, 'Elite: Reclamation'.

Effectively Patreus will have taken over Prism a year after Kahina 'reclaimed' it for herself. Kahina is also a Senator herself, so this really makes no sense at all from a lore perspective - she would never allow it. I'm afraid I have zero influence over this. I did ask for Prism to be excluded from PowerPlay but was told it was not possible. I suspect Prism will fall to Patreus within weeks.

Personally, I'd prefer Kahina not to be part of PowerPlay as I have other plans for her. If these don't come to fruition (we'll know within a week or two) I'd be happy for her to become a 'Power' if that's what players would like - though this would rule out any sequel books about her, as players would decide her actions, not me.

However, players will have to petition rather dramatically on her behalf to make this happen as only in house characters have thus far been represented - there are no characters present from the official fiction.

Cheers,

Drew.

You forget that most Americans dislike much of government at the moment, but definitely not into being "subjects" and America is more like an alliance if you look at it from a state point of view, all together for a cause but wanting to be independent in your own backyard.

Also the reason so many have flocked to Aisling is simply space wood and that will change over time.

Ah, sorry Drew, I just checked out the work we've been doing this Cycle... Prism will be located in Patreus space sooner than you think. We didn't target it, but it falls in the radius of another system we're moving into.

I agree with you 100% about the lore though. There are many Senators in the Empire - how are Torval, Lavigny, and Patreus able to claim vast swathes over what must be assigned to many other Senators? And Aisling too - she's nominally a princess but holds no tangible power (only the influence her canny playing of the media yields, and perhaps a stipend and a few residences as part of the Imperial family). Even though I was really excited for Powerplay coming out, as a writer I can't tally it with real lore. I've resorted to - in my mind - thinking of PP as an over-simplistic, unfinished representation of the state of affairs, and assuming that the "real" situation is more complex.

all you underdog PP pilots just hold on tight, i am expecting that we will see mass defections from the more popular powers at the end of fourth cycle.

I'm afraid that aside from the system specific content (i.e. the layout of the Prism system in my case) which was put into the game as agreed as part of the Kickstarter rewards, nothing else aligns with the lore established in the books.

The unfolding political landscape of the galaxy will be driven by Frontier's 'Power Characters' and then by player actions. It does not continue the stories started in the official fiction, or any of the characters.

The moment Prism falls to Patreus, we're effectively in a 'parallel universe' as far as my book is concerned. Kahina would be stropping around in the Imperial Senate demanding to know what the hell Patreus thought he was doing anywhere near the Prism system in a "real" situation. Kahina has a navy at her disposal in my story (two Interdictors and a fleet of accompanying vessels), there is no way she would allow a rival Imperial power to appropriate it in this fashion after she went to all the trouble to reclaim it from the Federation sponsored rebels - it would result in a civil war.

That this isn't occurring in game demonstrates the growing inconsistency. Alas, my fiction will shortly make no sense at all due to PowerPlay.

Cheers,

Drew.

Personally I enjoy spending all my time undermining Torvals efforts by killing off her broker ships in expansion systems. Its funny watching all the Torval security ships scurrying to try and interdict me and human players trying to kill me for the large bounties I have amassed. :p

I'm worried enough as it is about Powerplay unfolding due to player actions - what happens if some demagogue dupes the masses and wipes off the map a Power whose supposed strength and political canniness would in lore have crushed that challenge ten times over? It keeps me awake at night. I've started dreaming of the holotable from tactical meetings, dreams in which I'm muttering frenetically about troop movements and system values - and don't get me started about my growing paranoia over what will happen when I take a two week holiday this summer. It's a testament to how vivid this universe is, I suppose, that I've become so deeply invested (either that or the strength of my imagination) - and the problem is Powerplay isn't up to rendering that detailed universe in all its subtlety and finesse. It can't do certain things at this point. The PP map is a clunky misrepresentation of the real political situation - and neither you nor I can do anything except watch it unleashed into the world and see what happens. It's scary.

It's highly questionable what any of the Imperials Powers are doing with the vast regions of space they currently hold sway over. None of them ought to have "Control" over as many systems as they do. Influence? Now that's a different matter - but even then I'd say they're overrepresented. The Federation has a similar issue - Hudson and Winters' support is both high, but they wouldn't be delineated into neat borders, of course - all their political power would be with their huge voter bases, with systems scattered across the Federation voting this way or that. The problem is... you can write a genius coup, a lightning campaign, a subtle move on the page... but to code it into the game is hard. Goodness knows that the Powers themselves now seem more two-dimensional and less politically adept than they used to be because now their behaviour is marked out by a predetermined set of methods as laid out in their ethos... but it's not real because they'd adapt to the changing situations. Before when we only had the Galnet and community goals this was at least hand-placed.

I'm not even sure that the game can handle that level of sophistication in rendering Human, clever, unpredictable Powers, or modelling it on a galactic scale. Admittedly it's sad, but I don't know what anyone can do.

Perhaps I should drop the following here.

Not all Alliance control systems are undermined 100%. It would be a terrible (cough) shame (cough cough) if they received some tough loving (cough cough, elbow in ribs, wink wink) in the final run up to the end of this cycle.

Alliance Bureaucrats have been telling me some terrible things about your mummy's.

Go fill your boots.

You do understand the Federal Corvette is gonna be bigger then the anna....cheaper is out of the question. However i do agree the alliance and Feds look like poo compared to the empire

We were told that the Corvette would be the biggest playable Federation ship, not ship altogether. And as the only other Fed ships are the F63 Condor and the Dropship, both of which aren't really massive, it doesn't say much.
