The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Why are people acting like this is news? Planetary landings and walking around were confirmed in the original kick starter, and reinforced in the design discussion forums, which are still available archived for every one to see what is planned long term. Unless we hear information to the contrary from the developers, assume everything in that archive is still on the table for inclusion.

because repeating things we already know counts as announcement and makes everyone happy?

That wasn't my comment. My comment was that CQC (in particular) had zero originality when talking about in the creative sense. Deatmatch, Capture the Flag - it's been done hundreds of times. I'm not saying it doesn't belong - I'm all for bolt-ons like this, that can be completely ignored. But calling it creative, or referring to it like it's some sort of masterstroke, when the main game is still woefully shallow, is a bit annoying. Powerplay and CQC should have been developed (IMHO) in pace with the main game - what we actually have are shiny new baubles on a withered and sad christmas tree.

Might have missed something here, but who's calling CQC "creative" or a "master stroke"?

So was that an error by the journalist or something that was said by mistake?
Take your time to think about that answer. I was there, I know the truth...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that when they invited you to E3, FDev had you sign some sort of NDA with regards to matters that were discussed 'behind closed doors' as it were, possibly this interview included.

If that is the case, I'm curious if it would not be a better idea not to say anything at all instead of coming onto the forums and encouraging yet more speculation, doubt and possibly arguments by these dangling, teasing comments.

I appreciate the fact that you're a great advocate and ambassador for this community, from what I've read but, and this could just be me, this just feels like stoking a fire that doesn't need stoking. If you can't say anything due to NDA, then it makes more sense just not to say anything, surely?

The reason I had not posted something similar was because I probably would not have managed to be so polite. Significant reduction in respect here.

Funny. I've been hanging around with David for the last few days, I didn't hear him confirm any of this? :p

From the arstechnica article:

Braben was unfortunately cagey on actual upcoming features we might see, but he did re-confirm that both the planetary landings and walk-around-the-ship mode were coming

So, are you saying that in fact David did not confirm these things to the arstechnica journalist?

Kerrash was refering to the journalist's mistake in calling the ability to walk-around a 3rd person release. As has been linked several time in this thread, the magazine has corrected the article and apologised for the mistake.

No 3rd person = less work, another low hanging fruit

So you´ll be alone on your ship with some added interior in the backside, in first person. Can´t see an avatar, so a glorified debug camera which will be sold as walking on ships DLC maybe?

I can't wait until we can walk around our ship on those long haul trip in SC.
Check on the engines, the hull, the landing gears. OMG orgasmic.
Then land on a planet for a quick break from the dangerous galaxy, do some hunting, have a picnic;)

Fine, I just wanted clarification as he wasn't specific and was surprised he commented on the 1st/3rd person thing as it was already known to be a mistake - I was worried in case he was referring to planetary landings, no worries.

Why don't they just tell us what we can actually expect??

Because they're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Scenario one: David says 1.4 will have Dolphin, Beluga and Panther with new facility for Passenger transport. Then closer to release, they find that the Panther isn't ready and exclude it. Light blue forum posts and retire quickly!! David's most casual remarks are taken by many as a binding contract and any failure to exceed expectations as a massive betrayal. So the forum-hate and #refund posts kick off in earnest any time reality and expectation clash. Would you put your head in that noose?

Scenario two: David and the rest of Frontier say nothing until each beta is finalised. People complain they are told nothing. People quote the DDF and ask why X or Y is missing or not implemented how they like. But basically know nothing, so lack solid grounds to attack Frontier. Awkward, but probably the lesser of two evils.

I'm decidedly someone who wants to know what's coming and have very strong opinions on what should be in the game and where the priorities should be. But despite having bought into the BETA and donated to the Kickstarter, I'm not a Frontier developer and I don't own even a part of the company. So I just have to be patient and judge Elite on it's merits at each release.

Sucks, but there you go. I would be more upset if there was no ongoing development.

Couldn't agree more....

The reason they won't is because of "offlinegate". The rage and stamping of tiny immature feet was detectable on seismology equipment. They then had a raft of people claiming refunds. Then for pretty much anything else they've announced or done, further rage, talk of broken promises (even when none was made). Much of this is lead by a very vocal disenfranchised few who then manage to whip up a furore, who seem to have very little vested interest in the game, yet insist of coming onto the forums to express their opinion. So FDEV are never going to announce an intention of doing anything until they're completely sure, and they have the development bandwidth.

I honestly don't know why people are expecting some great planetary landing game, or even ship/station exploration.

My philosophy on this subject at the moment is this: I'll believe it when I see it. FD has given no indication that they will be able to pull off a meaningful planetary exploration or individual exploration game. What we'll likely get is maybe a few ad hoc attempts to do it that amount to very little in the end. Honestly, who thinks we're going to be able to land on planets and explore the entire planet? I hope no one. It will likely be some random small zoned thingy which you can do very little, that happens to look "somewhat" like the planet from space. This is assuming we see anything like this at all.

If you want planetary landing's, best to look towards No Man's Sky, who included the prospect as a cornerstone of the game's functions. It's going to be quite difficult for FD to shoehorn such huge features into the game at this point. Furthermore, given their track record with ED so far, even if such features were implemented, expect a plethora of issues and bugs. FD should just focus on adding walking around in ships and fixing what's there, and adding more variety/missions to the space game (c'mon, not a single escort mission?).

You under estimate FD. Sure their recent update isn't what a lot of us expected, but that will be ironed out. I'm sure of it. These guys are a passionate determined group of people. FD are more than capable of this feat.

I fully believe FD will accomplish it. There is no doubt it will appear, it just won't be this year. Look at the universe they have created already. It's only been six months since release and it's still early days. The best is yet to come.

To be fair we are talking about a game (ED) that's based on Elite & Frontier .. SO its hardly original in the first place. Elite started the space trading genre, and now its continuing it...

There is very little originality in video games any more simply because the majority of ideas have already been done and what's we have now is just a rehash of the same ideas over and over again... Occasionally something will come out of the blue (Minecraft is a good example) but things like that are few and far between these days.

Minecraft is essentially just Lego.
The funny thing is, Lego now have their own game "Lego Worlds", it looks nice and everything, but it looks nothing like Minecraft.
Give me Minecraft any day (I feel Lego is aimed at a much younger audience than Minecraft).
