The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

it is already in development, we don't know how much has been done yet, but we do know it has been for awhile since the first tech demo's has been out for over a year and that it is still ongoing by recent confirmation .
so it is possible that scrapping it would be more a waste of time and resources than going through whit it if that is your main argument against it.

I'm so tired of people asking for planetary landings. A feature like like would cost Frontier months and months to develop. What are you going to do when you get down to the planet? Collect samples? First person shooter? Seriously go play a different game instead.

I have a few ideas of things that would be much easier and faster to implement and a lot more fun:

  1. Boss fights : a wing of commanders take on a capitol ship and try to destroy it.
  2. Defend the space station : shoot rebel/alien ships that are attacking a space station
  3. Defend the planet : scoop escape pod canisters escaping the surface of a planet that's under attack and deliver them to safety
  4. pvp battlegrounds (I guess these are already coming)
  5. Inter ship docking : Dock your viper into an Anaconda and fly with them – may man one of the turret weapons
  6. Ship tow bar module : allow ships to be towed from one station to another – to move your own ships or other people's ships for credits

Please add more ideas and lets forget about boring stuff like planetary landings and walking around space ships.

i don't want these :)
instead i'd like to fly down to a planet, though a beautiful landscape and just dock'n'trade... nothing fancy.

where is that list heading?
  • fixed save points
  • module crafting (+skill system)
  • green (or blue) health packs to find in space
  • reduce steering complexity to play with 4 buttons
  • prestige classes

I'm personally not against planetary landings, but there's so much that they need to do first. The main one being fleshing out and defining the different so called careers in elite

am not sure what the draw is to landing too, like you say months to develop to land on planet go Oo that look nice and take off again. It will get OLD real fast. and will be another section of the game that well doesn't have engaging content

I'd like a cooking simulation in the ship's galley.

the can buy the licenses of the minigames in the spacequest series. I can still "smell" the burger-mini game...

Please don't.

It seems from your post that what you want to do is combat. Nothing wrong with that, but there are many different options in Elite and different people want different things. Planetary landings seems a very popular thing and it is something that FD have always promised. Can't see abandoning it now would be a good thing.

Multi-god-damn-crew. Please is it that hard ? I mean i know this game is huge and complicated, but how can it be so hard to achieve that ?

Yes. Multi-crews are complicated and difficult to pull of. Check out "Guns of Icarus" for a game that does it wonderfully, and then just think about the size (Of the ships, the 'maps', the amount of players) difference between Elite and GoI.

Watch this and tell me you dont want it, in all of ED's modernised visual and auditory Glory

Get a wing and go for the heat sinks and find out what happens :)

Defend the space station : shoot rebel/alien ships that are attacking a space station

Interesting alternative for conflict zones....

Defend the planet : scoop escape pod canisters escaping the surface of a planet that's under attack and deliver them to safety

Hopefully we will get full passenger missions
Still like you concept Flying to a planet to scoop up say a spy that has been dropped for extraction or go to the debris zones and rescue escape pods?

pvp battlegrounds (I guess these are already coming)

Inter ship docking : Dock your viper into an Anaconda and fly with them – may man one of the turret weapons
Hopefully we will see that, Thing the Anaconda says she can carry a Sidewinder, the Corvette and Cutter maybe can carry too

Ship tow bar module : allow ships to be towed from one station to another – to move your own ships or other people's ships for credits

And I am sure Pirates might find other uses too ;-)

It shouldn't be an alternative to fleshing out the core game, but I for one am excited for the possibilities of the planetary stuff. I just hope they focus on game-play and think about the details. Making something beautiful but shallow is only going to satisfy so many people for so long (as we have seen here).

The planetary stuff is touted as a paid expansion, so is presumably a separately financed project from the main game. That said, I really do hope they won't just move on to things like this and pretend like the main game is finished, because it's a long way from that imo.

Planetary landing were in 2 out of 3 previous games in the series. They've been announced ages ago and were always in the pipeline as a MAJOR paid expansion. Your request is pointless, planetary landing are coming regardless of what you're proposing, especially that they've been confirmed at E3 by DBOBE.

Kudos for a constructive post, i.e. suggesting some alternatives.

Moving down to the surface layer I am all for, I'm not convinced about the idea of landing on the planet and leaving your ship, I can only imagine it turning out badly.

But dogfighting over mountain ranges, or above zipping above a desert surface sounds very immersive.

But...imo there is soooo much to sort out before that should even be considered.
