The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

I'm so tired of people asking for planetary landings. A feature like like would cost Frontier months and months to develop. What are you going to do when you get down to the planet? Collect samples? First person shooter? Seriously go play a different game instead.

I agree that feature is not priority.

So...you want FD to stop what the majority wants and concentrate on what you only want.....good luck with that.
Might be a majority, we don't know, but it certainly isn't just OP.

I think Twitter is nonsense. And I'd like a new chair.
Agree with this post, but without the irony.

Practically everything you've mentioned is more of the same boring space combat we already have enough of or utilities which could be useful but don't offer anything really new to the game.
How you thought any of those ideas would be better than planetary landings is beyond me. Flying on planets will actually give us a place to fly around that isn't the same empty black space.
It is a space simulator, in case you hadn't noticed.

Rollecoasters. That's the way forward.
Nah....that would be a different game. Wait....like FPS or Flight Simulator.

I'm personally not against planetary landings, but there's so much that they need to do first. The main one being fleshing out and defining the different so called careers in elite
So, so ,so much this.

How not to want the planetary landings ?

I just hope planetary landings give us some real content. I hope it isn't just a case of a few fixed combat zones that you home in on and then engage in mindless COD style pew pew!

Sure we can have a bit of that but i want things to find and explore, mysteries and puzzles to solve etc etc.

Atmospheric (in the widest sense possible, considering many celestial bodies don't have any atmosphere) and landings have direct potentials for pretty much all professions if you think about it. (stationary rigs for mining, atmospheric dogfights for bounty hunters, general visual diversity for traders and well .. explorers will take anything that looks cool as a reward but it would be cool if they were able to prospect for spots on planets and moon with a higher density of resources, which would help the miners).

Of your ideas, 1,2 and 3 are just a completely different game, 4 too but it is coming anyway.
5 and 6 both have merit as they would integrate in the way Elite plays right now. 5 would only work when "running around the ship" is implemented. ANY way to move ships from one station to another would be just grand though.

i used to be in the same camp as the anti landing party, (not really anti here, but sceptical)

i think i know how much work would be involved into such a project, and i used to think that the time needed could be better spent on other things.
but when i heard that the work is still ongoing and that its going strong and possible might become one of our first paid expansions i changed my mind.

if they indeed has been working along on this all the time then it would be insane to throw that work away.
i also think its a good choice for a paid expansion, i am sure allot of people will buy it (i am going to buy it to)
and that means more revenue for FD that they can use for even more development.
and no matter if you are pro planetary landings or not that is something that we all want.

Because they aren't going to look like anyting like that (Xbox compliant), are not going to work specially well (will come with more bugs with each update) and I just don't believe FD can pull it off seeing what happens in the current game and, most importantly, the rate of progress since beta 1. FD has a snail pace, just count whaét's different from last year at the same time. Exploration is the same unfinished thing, Trade is the same as always. We got YAY two iterations of mining which still don't work, a few more ship models and... and... well, that's it. Oh, and new bugs. PowerPlay isn't working properly either, blahblah I think you're getting the message.

So, er, no, please, no planetary landings. More broken content won't help.

Multi-god-damn-crew. Please is it that hard ? I mean i know this game is huge and complicated, but how can it be so hard to achieve that ?

one of the hardest things you could imagine, this is one of the reasons why Space Citizen is not out yet, I guess.

Elite P2P system will probably crush a lot of dreams until they find out getting servers is the better idea for player interaction.

The last two games in the series had free-form planetary landing and were praised for the feeling of freedom it gave even if there wasn't that much to do.

Why wouldn't they wouldn't the series to include a major feature that was included over 20 years ago?

The expansion packs are (presumably) being developed by a separate team or at least in some isolation from the main game. It's essentially another game Frontier have in development. They are a long standing studio capable of developing many projects. I don't see why they wouldn't be able to have this development going on alongside the main game development without much impact. The idea is for the expansions to provide a good return, and it probably will.

If landing on a planet gave a different, challenging and fun flying experience that'd be very cool. But I'd want no more than a planet-based station, similar to space stations, once landed. No fps stuff. FD have enough of a challenge finishing what they've already done.

The planetary landings can be released in 2 (3?) years. And before significant improvements can be made to the current game in space. In FE2, the planetary landings were very pleasant ( fly over of planets, missions ....). Finally, if the graphic quality is equivalent to the current quality of the game in the space, it will be already fantastic

Boss fights : a wing of commanders take on a capitol ship and try to destroy it.
Awful idea. Why does everything have to be destroy Will Robinson destroy. Many like to explore or trade or mine. Elite wasn't written by Nintendo! Big Boss Sheesh!

Defend the space station : shoot rebel/alien ships that are attacking a space station
Have you ever p***ed off a station! They don't need our help.

Defend the planet scoop escape pod canisters escaping the surface of a planet that's under attack and deliver them to safety
Maybe

pvp battlegrounds (I guess these are already coming)
And I for one won't be going there. Bloody Space Invaders!

Inter ship docking : Dock your viper into an Anaconda and fly with them – may man one of the turret weapons
Hmmm, OK but I personally like the freedom to do my thing.

Ship tow bar module : allow ships to be towed from one station to another – to move your own ships or other people's ships for credits
Good idea. There is a need to be able to transport or pay for ships to be transported

Please add more ideas and lets forget about boring stuff like planetary landings and walking around space ships.[/QUOTE]

How about landing on a planet and trading with the inhabitants or fly over the terrain harvest goods, discover rares, find stuff.
