The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Did you bother to read what I wrote? Yes I know all of that. But the engine could still do a pile of preparation work in anticipation of you dropping where you targeted, which is all that I said. I do a lot of performance design in my day job, and one of the easiest way to do things quicker is to not actually be quicker, but do some of it at a different time. There are two obvious ways: one is to prepare when you have time to do so, and the other is to not do all the work you need to do at the time, and fill in the details later - that one works much less well here.

Yes I read what you wrote, but what you are suggesting assumes that people don't change targets. What might work sometimes or even most of the time will not work all of the time and would add a great deal of complexity to what is currently working consistently and doesn't even involve a long wait. At least now it works the same most of the time. What you are suggesting would be different everytime depending on whether you change targets mid-flight or how close to your target you are when you choose your target. It would also use processor (cpu and maybe gpu) time that would lower the frame rate and possibly increase the chance of stuttering. Pre-loading wouldn't deal with merging instances either.

But this is off topic. Planetary landing might be dealt with completely differently than SC is and FD are unlikely to change SC/normal space transitions in the short term.

I do not want planetary landings BEFORE:

1. Improved visuals - meaning mostly more variations in:
a/ space station and cities in space (incl. interior)
b/ astronomical objects
c/ astronomical phenomena

2. Improved trading such as: better presentation (i.e. graphs; description, visuals); better and more dynamic price changes; player to player trading

3. Improved exploration (lots of stuff - the list is full of cool ideas - check exploration forum)

4. Improved missions (chain missions, something that doesn’t always involve - fly from A to B).

5. Improved lore (ie. talking heads, ability to walk around ships and station etc)

Only then I would like FD to work on planetary landings. I can't imagine planetary landings before i.e. ability to walk around stations or new stations added…

Nothing more needs to be said, really.

Well, no point in continuing this, them. I have spelled it out as simply as I could. If you refuse to get it, then you refuse to get it.

More a case of I do get it but disagree with you as far as I am concerned but I do agree on the pointlessness of circular arguments. :)

A mod started this thread to collate all ideas and comments into a single place, it was not started by the devs.

Well actually... I started this thread, even though my post appears as the second one. :p I guess it got merged or whatever, but this thread's title is the one I wrote, down to the typo that I made when I created it (at the time it wasn't possible to edit titles so it remained)... Not sure what the mods did here, guess they merged my thread with one they had made, but kept the title I wrote in my thread :) Whatever...

Little about me with ED so far :
I played ED for about 2 weeks and the game steals my heart with its great features that I haven't seen on any other space sims. The immerssive space, music, engine sounds, ships, trading, fighting everything. "Everthing is awesome - Emmet"

My thoughts about the ED Update
ED is a space simulation sandbox and it should be always like that. No FPS or buggy car riding or whatever other than I listed down here. For me it defeats the purpose of the whole game. Ever since I played the Freelancer game (Yes the one developed by the Chris Robert, who is now developing the Star Citizen) and searched everywhere for the suitable replacement with some more advanced gameplay and features. I found only one, it is Elite Dangerous.

Planet landing, explore the planet surface on a vechile and fighting - all these stuff ruin the current game play (My opinion) Also, how is possible for 400 billion star systems. Yes, it is nice to fly around the planet surface, discovering new creatures, riding a car around etc.. that will change the whole game. Don't you think?

If ED would have the following features it will be fine and its reasonable for a space sim.

For Starports and Planet Docking
1. Dock and get out of the ship and walk around the port. A small PDA system for every CMDR so they can access the Starport services from their hands directly.
2. A BAR for pilots to hang around, with some mini games and able to talk to fellow pilots. NPCs should be bartenders and game hosts, sharing rumors/news around, representatives of companies/factions etc... (something like Freelancer and X-Rebirth)
3. Fuel station, Outfitting Shop, Shipyard and the Trading Port. (Based on the Starport/Planet level some may or may not available) - Access either walking to the shops or access from the PDA.
4. Prison Colonies - Ability to destroy the prisoner ship, collect the prisoner escape pod and delivery it to the Prison colony for bounties. (new Wanted alive missions)
5. Trading and credits transfer between Players.

If ED team accomplish it for the next major update that will be fine, and for me the game is completed.

so excited about this.
i have been waiting for so long about news for planetary landings and walking around. i cant wait to see how this all goes down!
i really cant wait to see what my anaconda looks like on the inside.

i hope you can change the interior of your ship around.

What I would like to see in planetary landings...

Different types and sizes of specific commerce landing places (cities, villiages, mining site, starports (aka airports with cargo and manufacturing infrastructure surrounding them), farms, military bases (to name a few)

I would like the ability to land anywhere I choose within reason, such as flying over a mountain range and seeing a suitably flatish clearing that my ship will fit on I should be able to land there, flying over plains or plataues I should be able to land anywhere except on top of a building unless the buildings roof is able to accommodate my landing gear.

Planets should contain resources which can be obtained in multiple ways...
Through standard trading (buying), through stealing - read this as landing at a farm for example and herding their animals into my ships cargo bay, mining with MB4 Mining Machines or using lasers and a drone to mine a mountain range.

Mining resources on a planet should definitely deplete as they are mined... but not like asteroids, we are talking planets here so commanders should be able to collect tens of thousands of tons of material with a very slow bell curve on the diminishing returns.

Resources such as crops and animals should regenerate but not quickly, it should take at least a month real time for crops and animals to regenerate once they are depleted...

If we can have FPS type landing then that opens possibilities to other 'avenues' such as being able to break into a high tech plant and taking high end goods, this may involve dealing with NPC defenders of the facilities etc... Now the various facilities can be actually placed on the planet such as factories, distribution centres, warehouses etc for industrial worlds, farms, storage silos, meatworks, cold storage for agricultural worlds etc etc you get the idea...

Planets should contain a variety of terrain, platues, plains, mountains, seas, islands, etc that actually match the planets type as scanned from space... Some planets should not be able to land on but be able to fly your ship through still, such as gas giants, etc. Some Water Worlds should contain floating cities / starports where it makes sense, such as those with tourism economies etc.

There should be wildlife on planets capable of sustaining such life and in fact I would suggest there should be whole ecosystems that match the planets particular type of lifeforms, plants, herbivores, carnivores omnivores etc...

Loving all the suggestions so I won't add to those that I've read, but if no one has said this, and it's not a huge thing to some but to me would be very exciting... I was hoping for "thick" clouds for some great hide and seek combat. Like a "Star trek - briar patch" that we have yet to see in open space as yet, so clouds would do if you want to stick with a post modern realistic universe.

That is all for the time being, until I can think of more, but like your CQC scenario on xbox I'd like to see creative ways of combat objects in the arena other than just asteroids (and the lowly outpost). :)

Planetary Landings: Predicted Whining and Otherwise Unsavory self-conduct.

Hey guys, you might remember me as the guy who started a thread, probably copied by many others, complaining about the fact that medium sized landing pads take twice as long to launch from, as opposed to both small and large landing pads. You also may have seen me making snipy little remarks towards those that just incessantly whine and complain about the state of the game. Here I am, your friendly neighborhood Brimstone. Bask in my Greatness.

Today I will be claiming 'first' for all post related to, and subsequently related to, the eventually coming Planetary Landings Expansion of the game.

And all whiny posts related to the potential bugs that could arise from implementing such a large and amazing expansion, and those people who couldn't wait to jump on the band wagon of others to complain about.

That's right folks! I started it first. (no, you guys who participated in the DDF don't count, because you're special, and we lesser folks don't know any better......)

So let's start with the potential bugs here:

Help! I landed my ship, and I fell through the ground, into the core of the planet!
possible response: thank you for your report, we are aware of the issue and the appropriate team has been notified. Have a great day.

Help! I landed in a portion of the planet that clearly had a hurricane situation going on, yet I'm feeling fine.
Possible response: thank you for your report, we are aware of the issue and the appropriate team has been notified. Have a great day.

Help! I tried to land on the edge of a volcano so that my Pilot could walk straight out into the lava. Why couldn't he/she do that?
Possible response: thank you for your report, we are aware of the issue and the appropriate team has been notified. Have a great day.

Help! I've landed in the arctic region of a new planet, and I am not seeing the appropriate clouds. FYI I lived in Antarctica, and I expect every polar region of every planet I visit to exhibit the same silly features that our's does, like Nacreous Clouds, and other silly things. I demand it NOW.
Possible response: thank you for your report, we are aware of the issue and the appropriate team has been notified. Have a great day.

Help! why isn't the equatorial part of the planet hotter than the rest of it? What is Tidally Locked mean?
Possible response: thank you for your report, we are aware of the issue and the appropriate team has been notified. Have a great day.

Help! When I try to lift off from the ground, my ship leans towards the right!
possible response: thank you for your report, we are aware of the issue and the appropriate team has been notified. Have a great day.

Help! I tried to harvest some plant from a tree I found from a planet I found 12,650 LY away but when I try, the came freezes and subsequently crashes. THARGOIDS?!?!?!!!!111
possible response: Thargoids are coming Soon(Trademark stamp here).

Note to the Mods. If this violates anything, kill it please. Otherwise, let us have some fun :). I know the fun won't last for long though.

Walking around ships and stations please.
