Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread - Part the Second [Now With Added Platforms].

I have nothing against solo players, just give them their own space not with ours. After all they don't want to play with those who play in Open so what is the big issue?
Frontier is against splitting the galaxy. So much that every player, including the Console players, will be in the same galaxy, even though PC and Console players can't ever see each other (and XBox players aren't even allowed to play in Open if they don't have a Live Gold subscription).

Besides, splitting the galaxy would introduce a large number of issues if players were still able to freely switch between modes. And freely switching modes, allowing players to choose who they play with, is a core concept of the game, something that has been described and promised all the time since the idea of the game was first presented to the public. It was already present in the first proof of concept demo that Frontier showed in order to kick off their crowdfunding drive.

And yeah, that bit about the XBox players does mean that, if you think there are too many players nowadays that you can't see or counter, that number should drastically increase after the game's console launch. More so because, with the Open mode locked behind a Live Gold subscription for console players, it becomes even less likely that Frontier will ever do something to limit Solo players. Of course, many don't see any issue with players that might never see each other influencing the same galaxy simulation, as you might notice with even a cursory glance at this thread.

Read all the Reddit pages set up for all the factions, every day each one describes PVP activity in abundance every day.

ED is a game built to allow PvP for those players that want to engage in it. In other words, PvP is optional.

It is not a PvP-focused game, never was, and many players got ED exactly because we have been promised, since over two years ago, that we would never, ever, be forced into a PvP situation.

So because my connection isn't stable enough to defend myself in open mode, I should miss out? Even though I dropped $150 on the Beta to support ED?

Some players remind me more of us rich Alpha Backers enjoying our private members-only club, swilling fine cognac, imported cigars, and having our underlings polish our top hats while we look out the window at the howling mob trapped outside in the rain. :D

Started playing solo instead of in wings.

Why? Because bounties are halved between others in the wing. This is pretty bad, if the enemies were near impossible to kill, then sure.

You misunderstand. I do want to play with the players in Open. I just don't want to fight them. I would miss your influence on the Galaxy. I bought a game where I can play on my own if, and when, I choose but also contribute to one dynamic, shared Galaxy. (What game did you buy?)

If you start to split up the game into separate galaxies each one will be less dynamic. And GalNet would be a mess.

We all have a tiny amount of influence on the Galaxy but none of us can control events. Many, many things happen that are out of our control, that's how the game is supposed to be.

And yet in a wing you can kill twice as many in the same amount of time.

You know, i've just realized (or remembered) another reason why i like the ability to switch modes. Even though i'm now more committed to playing in open, there are two times when i want group/solo.

1) Morning coffee. God help me if i got into a PvP incident while having morning coffee... it would be like *grunt* "Huh?" "Errr...." "oh...". I got interdicted by an NPC this morning while idling in SC and just looked blankly as i submitted and was pulled out of SC. Fortunaltey my synapses kicked in a few seconds later and i remembered how to fly.

2) Testing stuff. At the moment i'm testing mining. Seeing how it looks, getting a feel (by the way, enjoying it a lot. 100k for an hours work (not metallic ring, just metal rich) - not much money but i never focus on that anyway). Not really interested in being attacked by a player while trying stuff out, so group/solo is cool. Saying that, i could probably have done it in open without risk. I'm in an unpopular system, my ship was the only one listed when i looked in the station. But at other times the risk might be more real. A bit annoying to start doing a test - let's say checking the relative turn rates of different ships with different upgrades and timing each - only to have some player interfere.

I say: Cast down the evil mods who started this thread. :) HEHE
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Great idea! why FD should care about anti-solo thread? MOVE IT ALL TO ONE BLACK HOLE!
80% players don't want solo. 18% don't care...

FD can delete solo and to alive . But why? Let people rage in one never watched by devs thread!

Good play FD, good play...

So u say 80% of the player base is at open? give us the actual numbers then ...

It is a shame FD won't tell us how many people play in each mode and how many people swap.
I think the numbers could be very interesting.

It would also be nice to know the player spread in each mode, I'd guess that Solo / Group players would hang around the core worlds more then Open players do.
I believe that is why Open feels more "sparse". Because players have spread out more to avoid problem players. (I base this guess on what I have seen in my limited time using Open Mode)

Its what i've got a feeling for based off my friends lists. Agreed its a small sample size, perhaps 100 people on my friend list - but its the impression i get.

What i also note is that many of them do swap modes from time to time.

the problem is that they come up with numbers out of their belly to try make their point......

Wouldn't it more logical to assume that your gaming friends tend to be people with similar gaming preferences to you rather than a proportionate representation of the whole player base?

Open is the most interesting, but wont work in the P2P architecture. The issues are hacks and combat log. As long as there are hacks, there is no reason to fix combat log -> it is the only way to escape hackers. Dedicated servers are needed for hack free PvP.

Group and Solo works just fine.

That morning coffee part is so true. It takes me 2 double espresso to know what I have to do on a Saturday morning in Elite. I usually use that time to trade a bit. Combat is completely out of question in that time :D
