All fights against AI = afterburn + FA off turning

Dogfighting is all about controlling the fight, if you are the aggressor and are stuck in a turning battle and can't shoot them, you are losing the fight. If you are the defender and are stuck in a turning battle and they can't shoot you, you are wining the fight.

Don't just expect to get on their six stay there and blast em to hell, except with slower ships and you are a good pilot. The AI is worked on constantly, tweaks here tweaks there, give it some more time, pretty soon your next thread will be, That's it I quit I can't win because the AI is to tough.

Dogfights in WW2 could last long enough that fuel could become a serious issue. If the fight isn't over in a matter of minutes (according to your expectations) re-evaluate your strategies.

Thats the thing...its not besting me. Its not landing -any- shots at all. Its just drawing the fight out. And like Sarah pointed out, just flying backwards and facetanking stops the fight entirely since the AI will just chase me and get blown up. I just dont want to use that strategy since its so cheesy.

But okay. Sarah, if you're being legit and that the games going to get spiced up, I will believe you. I'm happy that someone at least knows what I'm talking about and I'm not crazy!

Thank you for the reply.

Not sure what you're flying, but even an Anaconda doesn't take 10 minutes in my Vulture (fixed pulses). 3 Eagles might, but not a lone one. I have a variety of tactics depending upon the ship I'm fighting. For example knife fight a python, joust an Eagle, keep up with a Viper, etc. I never have to resort to reverse (why when there's an FA OFF button?). Any lone ship, if I'm winning, goes down quite quickly.

I can easily 1v1 an enemy Anaconda with my Vulture, and down it in about a minute. The key is to target their power plant, and stay within 1km of your target at all times, with your weapons on target and unloading nonstop. I strongly advise all gimballed weapons, as missing any more than 15-20% of your shots with fixed weapons means gimballed weapon damage would be more consistent for you. Gimballed weapons also give you the opportunity to maneuver in particular ways where, if you were using fixed weapons, you would not be able to fire upon your enemy while performing such maneuvers.

Do all of that, and they'll go down extremely fast. It's all about maneuvering properly. You might not be able to do this with a Viper. The Vulture has extremely good maneuverability.

And all was right in the Elite Universe...thanks SJA

What were you flying, if you don't mind me asking?

I've tried Sidewinder, Python, Vulture, Anaconda... Result is always the same. Turn to face one ship and it slips out of weapons range while its buddy swoops in and kicks your... er... rear end. :) You might get a few shots in, but you're flying in reverse and he's using thrusters to back away to a safe distance. Oh, I just love it! :D Nothing better than trying it out with Elite AI anacondas loaded with PAs, and missile racks they're not afraid to use any more (oh yes, I've fixed AI missile firing on my build). :)

Does the last sentence means that the missiles actually WILL DO SOME DAMAGE ?

If so, than YES, this can be fun. I only hope that missiles will work for players too, not only for NPCs.

This will be great, give us a reason to use point defense again!! :)

If you are taking +10 minutes to kill a single viper, the problem is not with the game or the AI, I'm afraid.
.
Instead of putting all your pips to shield and weapons, try to put 2 pips on engines, and leave throttle on blue... A brand new world will unfold for you...

I think that means that NPCs will only fire missiles when your shields are down.

I don't think SJA does anything with weapon balancing so they should remain just as ineffective against shields as before.

Though, I wonder, does SJA also do the AI for missile guidance?

This is correct, they have no need. Also I can add that AI combat is getting a big upgrade. It's what I'm working on right now, adding a load of new tactics to make things more... interesting. ;) Oh, and with the new tactics, flying in reverse won't work. :) You have been warned.

See what happens when you guys open your bit, fat mouths... :(

I always have point defense mounted, right after boosters and KWS. Very cost-effective.

I *told* you guys that she would find a way... :(

I can't help thinking the next AI release is going to be painful and it's all our fault. Weeks ago Ms Avory joined in a conversation on here when we were talking about tactics and she said, she actually told us, she was making notes. All that loose talk in the face of a lady who I think we must, in the nicest possible way, regard as the enemy (as Saruman was to the Orcs so Ms Avory is to the NPCs) is going to come back to bite us. Remember, you fellows, loose lips sink ships.

SJA has done a fine job with the DC and AI and that's the end of it.

I personally think in some areas the combat AI is way too easy right now and a bit of a joke. There's some serious holes in its logic, but I'm addressing all those now. Players reversing was high on my list, and on my build that's sorted. So by the time I'm done (and until someone tells me to dial it back) high ranks (especially Elite) will be showing no mercy. :) But lower ranks will be made easier. See, I can be nice... ;)

So long as the credit value for the harder AI scales accordingly I'm all for it. Otherwise, probably not much point bothering with them.

Will this include AI loadouts? Will the CZ Pythons and Anacondas finally stop loading their C3 slots with turreted frag cannons? The regular AI versions of those can be quite challenging (as in, they made me use a shield cell on a few occasions), but the CZ ones I've started avoiding out of pity. I feel like a scumbag murdering someone who obviously has no idea what a starship is, never mind how to fly one.
