Elite Dangerous and Windows 10 Discussion thread.

Windows 10 - think we need a sticky thread for the next month

The forum search function is very weak IMO. I know I have seen some Windows 10 threads but can't find them.

Have run 3 builds of Win 10 so far. The most recent update today to Build 10166 seems to have some graphics issues I need to sort out - I have joined the happy family of studders and pauses in graphics. As I and others have our issues in July might be a good idea to have a place to capture what happened and any fixes. Don't know which main thread this should be on, but my July 29 predication will be tons of folks getting their free upgrade and running into game issues that bring them here to find the fix. The Windows "help" has never been very helpful. They will come here to fix ED/Win 10 issues.

Might also be a good idea to not do any ED updates that week starting July 29.

I have decided to adopt a wait and see policy with Windows 10. It may be time to take my remaining machines to Linux. Has anyone got Elite running on Linux?

Always some people that have to come into a thread and poop on a good idea.

I'm with you OP, it would be good to have a Windows 10 thread maybe in a tech support forum. Have you checked to see if one exists?

It's coming out on the 29th, free to most people, so we should expect it will be adopted quicker than usual. Don't know why people want to continue to bury their heads in the sand and pretend it doesn't exist.

I've been running builds since 10076. ED runs just fine form a framerate perspective but I do occasionally get some crashes - not sure if it's the video driver or a Win 10 issue.

Not yet, but with DirectX11 support finally arriving at Wine/Crossover this year, there's possibility we will be able to play it before FD decides to take on SteamOS port.

Launcher is another issue being .NET application, but that's somehow workable if actual 3D would work.

Windows 10 is not officially supported yet nor I think it will for some time.

It should really be supported from 29th July IMHO as that it is the day it will be the current version of Windows and not a legacy version. People will be buying machines with this pre-installed. I'm sure FD will do their damnedest to fix any issues - no point delaying the inevitable when you can be ahead of the game.

It should, but considering how much it adds to costs and changes things, it won't. For few months it will be 'run at your own risk'. Expect same attitude from other vendors.

Currently stuck with Windows 8.1, and don't like it. It's better than before tough, I used to despise it with a passion.
Fortunately I managed to make it almost as good as Seven using third party tools, which is nice.

When Windows 10 is released, I'll wait, and then I'll wait some more, and then I'll wait again. And THEN, I'll wait for a good 6 month, and ONLY then I'll see if Win 10 is working well enough, or is tweakable enough, to justify upgrading from a pimped-up, perfectly working but mildly-annoying Win 8.

That's a bad idea, 10 is a hell of a lot better than 8 seeing as it's really just 8 fixed.

There is nothing wrong with my Windows OS (7). There is no reason to upgrade... all an upgrade will do is disrupt my environment.

If I have to eventually pay for an upgrade due to end of life support, I will have saved a packet by not having my time wasted by an unnecessary upgrade now.

All it seems to be is a new DRM model, forced updates, no opt out, moving to a subscription model... it's a downgrade. Avoid it as long as you can.... don't be a sheep.
