So why is everyone talking about Eve Online. Is that the standard way to derail an honest feature request? It is akin to the Chewbacca defense. "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if we could have player groups in game?"- "Well Chewbacca is a Wookie. Wookies live on the planet Kashyyk...and that is why we don't play Eve online". I can only assume this is because the average person looking at this thinks "Well it is a game in space, so adding a feature that is also in another game in space will make them the same game". This debate has been allowed to run away with it unchecked. I wonder if it is even possible to construct valid defense against group recognition, without someone mentioning EVE and then derailing all the points over to that debate. An interesting, but somewhat "uncomfortable" fact you should be aware of..

Having formed one of the first and longest standing guild-type groups in Elite: Dangerous, I would neither expect nor want FD to bend over backwards to make the game a better experience for us, and neither would many of our 1000+ members. We're here to play Elite on its own terms, as laid out since Kickstarter and as determined by it's 30-year legacy. We don't play Eve because we don't want to play Eve. If we get a few more features to help us manage stuff a bit easier in game, great - but changing the game into something different to make us feel special or powerful? Nah, that's not what Elite is about. And Eve's deservedly cornered that market anyway.

And that's all I've got to say about that.

Have some rep. Nicely put - nothing wrong with guilds in and of themselves, but also nothing wrong with ED having a different theme and feel from guild focused games. It's actually part of the appeal to a lot of people that you are often alone and vulnerable - makes the whole space thing much more evocative. Again, nothing wrong with people playing in groups if they feel like, but there's no need to direct the game down that path as it will change the general vibe of the Elite franchise too much (IMHO). As you say - "that's not what Elite is about" - yes it can have the same old stuff as every other MMO, but then it really is just another MMO, but in space. Despite the issues I have with the game development path, that's not one of them - the fact it can be different in those respects and have successful sales.

Well said. Have rep

<snip>

That brings me to a sub point, Since there is no challenging content currently for solo what are all you solo advocates doing? Just cruising around looking at the scenery? This is not a dig I really want to know if I am missing out on some content somewhere as like I said I am newer to this game. Is there a system somewhere where the AI becomes challenging or the missions become interesting that I don't know about?

Sorry, I read your post on the phone earlier but when I replied I missed one question, when someone asks a question, states they are new and asks for info as you have it deserves a proper answer (especially in a forum CZ where it was stated it was not "a dig" but a real question) :). And one other point I need to answer first too.

"Since there is no challenging content currently for solo", after SJA did her last evil update I lost my Vulture twice and survived once due to decent life support in a week or 2, IIRC you mentioned you have a Python in ~6 weeks, I just got mine after 14 months lol, I don't know if I should congratulate you or feel sorry, you might finish it in a few months. I expect to be playing for many years to come.

I joined the game in PB1 about 14 months ago, I always played in Open, maybe solo half a dozen times when open was unusable for me (I was quite lucky through Beta), all the way to the middle of Gamma ~ 6 months (Beta was a bug fest but full of unicorns, kittens and Bacon compared to the game now :().

I joined Mobius 2 weeks after he started the group as an insurance policy, he decided to start a group as he preferred PVE and the game didn't offer an option in the menu (and I watched the early discussions regarding BH pirates etc, it started as yes but changed to a no. Only in a CZ with rules, read the first few pages, its a group of people forming the rules its interesting watching a group form, not quite a window to Beta but a look at the mindset of why the Mobius group is here).

And no matter what people say Mobius is not a guild, its a random group of people joined for various reasons with a common interest. Everyone joined (I assume) for the consequential / controlled (rather than random) PVP and yes you can have it if you want to look in a CZ in Mobius.

As much as I would love to say I have Mobius himself on speed dial and he accepts my calls at 3 am, and will get 11k people out of bed or work to help me out, its not the truth, some may wing up with people they met, others will not and they are scattered to the winds doing the same random stuff as any non affiliated CMDRS in the other modes.

Now why do I play in solo? (sometimes), the first and foremost reason is I see someone post something about cowards hiding in solo on the forum, it annoys me (but you know that you quoted my 1 of 2 only "really angry" posts in 14 months :p), I get wound up, combat log from the browser and go to my favourite Hi-res to take it out on some AI, it works for me :).

To address "Just cruising around looking at the scenery?" its called exploring or having fun, and some very talented people make some amazing videos about it, one got 3 dev likes (positive posts asking if they could use it) the other day, I wish I had the time to find it for you, the post was "thanks FD" or similar and it was brilliant, I think it was "obsidian ant" but that's not the forum name.

I hope the above gave you some insight in to others enjoyment of the game from a different view point. Its only one of many but you took the time so I made the effort.

I know! Let's start a poll! :D

Genius, can you hold off for 30 minutes I need to get on reddit and sort out my email distribution list :p:rolleyes:;).

What was it about again? if we are going to fix it properly this time? I need to know who to email and what to vote for at the very least.

PS,

Make it a closed poll please, I don't want granny or aunty Gillian getting posts about the option she voted for, bless, they would get all confused :p

PPS, I could have "rectified" that Poll in a few hours (if I was unscrupulous) lol, and I don't even know how to double nat (yet).

"Someone" calls my friend (I don't know guvnor wasn't me :p) he has other mates too you know, popular chap he is, very popular ;).

My Friend, "Hi boss can I borrow a few thousand IP addresses?"

Friends boss "Sure what for? and why would a non techie want them though?"

My Friend, "Oh just a forum vote thingy that needs correcting for fun, I just spoke to x dev and he will write me a quick script to autofill the screens to join etc, increment the IP's and email addresses etc, its been costed in at one lunch and I will cover that for my mates giggles", me and my mate will do the voting though, if he cant get that part coded in time!

Friends boss (is a techie) "Now John, you do realise the admins of the website will realise in a second when you do this, the IP and email addresses will all be sequential and a gcse level IT student would spot it, if you don't stagger it they will think you ddos'd them too, and that is bad!, the ddos police a brutal"

My friend, "Lol boss, Dev x mentioned spreading it out over a few days too, its not its that many votes we are talking 3k over a week, but don't worry about the zero day accounts there are so many already they wouldn't notice our IP's if they looked for, he also wanted to randomise the IP's, we have a million, you underestimate your devs, he should give it a few hours on my wallet, what you got to lose?"

Friends boss "if its on his own time go for it"

Ohhhh lets start a poll (any poll, my friend's Dev is excited to try, and the boss has made it a KPI for him now).

I gotta go the "red" phone is ringing, only DBOBE and Mobius have this number, its gotta be serious!

You know what happened last time.

A short time later........

There have been many zero day accounts today, most of which have had no activity but, guess what, vote on this poll.

ETA - another 10 accounts as I typed the above

Forum PvP and the meta, oh how I miss you:rolleyes: Still not enough to re-sub to "that other space game though".

Mmm I wonder if Yaffle could quantify his ETA " another 10 accounts as I typed the above", now I don't mean to test how quick he types but 1 finger or 2 finger (or full on touch typing) would give us a clue, either way 10 in the space of 1 post, LOL, no actually ROFLPMSL, that screams of desperation (and the funniest thing is it won't change a single thing).

How about this, guy plays a game on his own, has no friends. Gets upset when people with friends ask for social features. Then starts making spurious analogies and resorting to memes to make an argument. Sound familiar ?

How about this, guy buys a game without guilds, guilds get upset and try to take over the game many people bought ages ago, one people KS on the basis of info from FD which excluded guilds. Sound familiar ?

Or, guy plays a game on his own because he spends too much time playing with RL family/friends doing RL things. Gets upset when people with no friends ask for social features in computer game to help them. Then starts making spurious analogies in response to endless irrelevant "studies" and "evidence" used to make an argument. Sound familiar?

Just as ridiculous I'd say..

this is why we can't have nice things

Just as entropy increases, so does my troll ignore list.
This thread should have been file 13'd the moment the troll-poll hit.

I really wish people wouldn't add them to the ignore list. I don't, but I totally, 100% understand why others do.

Maybe its just my opinion, but it seems to me that the people that make the best points seem to get the most abuse, maybe there is a reason for it, I would even call it a tactic.

ETA, choice yet again!

Or have a guild mode (and a pve one) then we will really not see guild tags and all the guilds can play the guild game together and can everyone else can carry on as normal

Guild mode has been suggested many many times, alas the comeback is always the same - if you don't like Guilds in open, play solo. See the thing is Guilds need Open, they need the non-aligned Commanders to be around as targets, err customers. Same reason why having the Guilds out in the far uninhabitable reaches of the Galaxy isn't looked about favourably, who would they umm 'interact' with!

How about Guy sees cool looking game, checks to see if game has social structures and guilds before buying, See game says it supports group functions and Wings (Advertised misleadingly as guilds). Buys game, Discovers game has 0 social support functions and no guilds, Guy heads to forum and posts about the game needing more social features and structures, guy gets flamed by anti guild players, who purchased an MMO not realizing MMO means Massively Multiplayer Online, Not Massively single player online with co-op support.....

That work?

Who's in the wrong,

- The guy who bought the game because it was advertised to have groups, and social structure support only to find it it doesn't, and groups loosely translates out of game useless list of friends?

Or

- The guy who bought an MMO thinking it was a single player with Co-Op, and gets upset when people mention the game needs more social support for it to function properly as an MMO (Which is what it is)?

Once again - where was Elite advertised anywhere as having guilds?

MMO means Massively Multiplayer Online. Elite is not MMOWG - Massively Multiplayer Online With Guilds.

We didn't even have Multiplayer in Alpha 1 :D

Asp mate, there you go again, bringing accuracy, common sense and logic into this argument - don't you know all of those things are strictly forbidden in this thread!
